View Full Version : What are your oddities?

Without getting too personal, what are your oddities you do in your life?
I have my alarm clock time set 20 mins fast. Sometimes it takes my brain a minute or two to wake up after my body wakes up. I usually wake up at 5 am and it the clock says 5:20 am in my mind, I am late and need to get ready ASAP. My brain does not remember it is 20 mins fast, only that I need to wake up at 5 am. Odd.

Where to begin? :p Oh, I'll list five.
I'm afraid of escalators. No, not because of Mallrats.
I'm clumsy as all get out.
I sound sort've like Porky the Pig when I talk.
I'm a compulsive hand washer.
I'm night blind and light-sensitive. Wrap your head around that one.
(I hope none of that was too personal.)

My biggest would be toiletpaper and paper towels, when i tear them it has to be perfect down the perferated edge... if it rips wrong I will keep going until it rips correctly, no matter how much I waste. It drives me crazy if I dont.
I cannot pee in a public place... which made school a bitch back in the day... I have to be in a closed off quiet bathroom... and sometimes I still have to count backwards to clear my mind.

I get dizzy exiting elevators and so I refuse to use them.
No matter the situation, I cannot have ink on my hands.

Start off with the physical stuff (I really dont care about getting personal, if anyone wants to get worked up or judge me over any of this stuff they can just go fuck themselves because I dont care):
I was born with webbed fingers on both hands. Just the pinky and the ring finger though. The left hand was surgically fixed when I was 2 years old, the right when I was 8. To this day I cant wear a ring properly on my left hand because of the way the webbing was cut away. I also have scars there on both hands (obviously) and instead of explaining to people what exactly happened, I just tell them they are birthmarks.
I had scoliosis correction surgery when I was 15 and now have 8 steel screws and 2 steel rods holding my spine together/straight. It's something I'll have to live with the rest of my entire life, but I've gotten used to it (as well as I can). Unless I have my shirt off so that you can see my scar, the only thing odd about me is the fact that I sit and stand perfectly straight. Again, I just tell people I practiced good posture my entire life and its just the way I sit instead of spilling the entire story.
I'm missing my left testicle thanks to a scare with cancer when I was 19. Long story short, it had recessed into my stomach (how, I dont know, I just woke up one day and it was gone, talk about an all time freak-out moment) and was basically just rotting away in there (as the doctor put it). They removed it for fear of it becoming cancerous (they said it wasnt going to come back down, and if they brought it down it might just go right back up) so they went in just under my belly button and removed it. I now have a small 3 inch scar under my belly button, but its not that noticeable because I'm as hairy as a goddamn Bigfoot. I can get a prosthetic put in, but have just never saved enough money to do so. Maybe someday. I'm ok with it for now (its been 6 years anyway).
Mental oddities:
I cant pee in public. I mean, I can, but I have to be shielded. I'm a definite stall man. The only way I can pee at a regular stand-up urinal is if I'm in a bathroom with a locking door so that I'm the only one in there or if I'm flat out shitfaced drunk and therefore dont care. However, if its a crowded bathroom, like at a bar, I still cant go in the stall. Think Calvin in "Waiting..." and that is me.
I have IBS (irritable bowel syndrome), but its purely stress related (thus making it a mental issue). It's a pain in the ass on dates or if I'm eating/around people I dont know or trust. Cause then as soon as I get done eating I get really bad gas and have to use the bathroom almost immediately. In fact, its gotten to the point on dates to where I refuse to go to dinner with a date. We have to do something that doesnt involve food because otherwise I'm gonna get nervous and possibly shit my pants in front of her.
I have, for whatever reason, a very sensitive nose and hearing, and can pick up things others have no idea what the hell I'm reacting to. I'll be with someone and say "do you hear that" or "do you smell that" and they'll say no, all the time. The hearing part comes in very handy though as I'm a high school librarian and can hear what kids are doing/saying without even having to look up from my desk, sometimes even if they are on the other side of the library. Its like my own personal way of eavesdropping.
I've got lots of others but I feel thats a good start for now...

Totally know what you mean about the bathroom thing Jackson... you must have had the same hard time in school that I had!!! Trying to convince a teacher to let you go between classes was a bitch too.
Also like Abbie, my car stereo has to be on even numbers... and if im riding with someone else and there stereo is on an odd number it drives me insane.
There was a time I would never listen to Ozzy if I was driving cause I thought it was bad luck... the first 3 times I got pulled over he was on the radio.
I also have never worked in a video store, but everytime I go in there I have to take every movie that I find that someone has set down out of place back where it belongs. I have spent hours in a video store just doing that.

When I was younger I wore a pair of 3D glasses way too long and frequently and now to this day I still see a faint tint of red through my right eye and blue through my left eye. It's not really that noticable unless it's really bright out or I'm looking at something pure white.

Not really. Like I said, I can go if I'm in a stall. I just need the privacy. But the only time a stall doesnt work is, like I said, if I'm at a bar. Mainly because drunks are assholes and they like to pound on doors and say "HURRY UP" or "WHATS THE MATTER, CANT PISS AT A URINAL LIKE A REAL MAN". Like thats gonna make it easy for ANYONE to piss. Assholes.

My right arm is 2 1/2 inches longer than my left. I noticed it while bench-pressing. So if I ever become a boxer, that might help me out.
I always have to sleep on the left side of my bed. I brought a girl home a couple weeks ago, I came downstairs to talk to my buddies for a couple minutes, I went back up and she was completely passed out on my side. So I moved her.
I constantly wash my hands. Probably because I'm a chef. Just a habit now.
If if I wear a shirt for like 15 minutes while I'm eating breakfast, then shower and change, I'll wash the shirt I had on because I think it's dirty.
And I'm 9 feet tall.

I too never use the urinals, It's either cubicle or hold it for me. Even If I am pissed, I refuse to piss in the urinal.
I really hate using the phone when calling strangers or a company. I get all stuttery and mumble like fuck. I'm don't have confidence issues or anything, I just try and get the call over with ASAP and end up talking to fast or explaining my problems in the worst way possible, which actually keeps me on the phone for longer.
Cannot drink out of a cup that somebody has drank out of. I know this isn't THAT odd. Even if it's family I pour whatever it is away rather than drink it.
I sleep with a air fan on contantly. I have a problem with my nose, which restricts me breathing clearly through my nostrils. I pretty much have a contant cold, sometimes annoying but I have learned to live with it. Anyways, the fan is like 5 inches from my face in order to keep me breathing clear at night.

I may have seen more movies before I was a teen than anyone else ever, though I can't prove it and could be wrong. It was several thousand anyway. I've cut down considerably in the last 8 years so any record I could have broken is long gone. I averaged 5 a day for a long time though.
My favorite number is 137, and has been since before preschool age. I have no idea why. I end up seeing it everywhere though, maybe Joel Schumacher should make a movie about it.
From a combination of sports, surfing, and having an older brother, I've had 5 concussions. I'm not supposed to play even intramural sports now and apparently another one could kill me. Az fer az I ken tel, I havint suferd ne brane damuj tho.
I lose socks like it's my job. I easily buy over 20 pairs a year and constantly have to replenish. I really can't account for what happens to them.
I can get by just fine on 2-3 hours of sleep a day for very extended periods of time.
I have freakishly big thighs and calves for a person my size, as in 27" thighs and a 30" waist. I can usually legpress the top of whatever machine I use, but otherwise am normal size/strength for a 5'9"/160lb dude. All of the men in my family are the same way.
I am more or less always hot. I keep the A/C in my room blaring on 60°, sleep with a fan, and am comfortable in a T-shirt and shorts when it's snowing outside.

I have an unhealthy love for trivia in general, too. I spend a large amount of time on Wikipedia just reading random articles.
I have an intense fear of the sight of blood (hemophobia). Even people telling graphic stories can make me very uneasy.

I have restless leg syndrome - that shit ain't funny.
It's awful. I will basically get these "attacks" - or really annoying fits - where it feels like my skin is crawling. It usually happens in the evenings. The only thing that makes it go away is to get up and walk around for five minutes. Sometimes when it's really bad I'll get on my exercise bike and ride for a while.
I know people make fun of the commercials for medication - it does sound absurd - but I never knew what was wrong with me until I saw those ads.

I have hyperactive sweating in my hands and feet... It's truly a miserable way to live.
However, my doctor introduced me to a medication 2 years ago for it; yet it also cuts off--to a degree--the production of saliva, nasal mucus, and tears. It's awesome for the sweating but I do overheat and get driven crazy by the dryness of my mouth, nose, and eyes.
I typically take it on days when I wear sandals or if it's too much to handle.

For fellow fans who may be interested, sign up at http://www.jeopardy.com/mini_sites/jeopardytryouts/index.php * and they'll let you know when the next online test is. If you pass it, you're given another, and if you pass that you can go to try out in person, take one more test, do a brief interview, and play a live round against two other contestants for their judges. Then either get on or get filed as a potential future contestant. As many former contestants have reported, by far the hardest part of the process is getting the timing of the buzzer down. I didn't make it onto the show, but it was a fun experience and it's always worth a shot.

My mother is a new age buddhist hippie vegan conspiracy theorist and while I rejected about 99% of her beliefs and behavior from a very young age, I still go on a ninety minute walk every morning, always. It wakes me up and gets me focused, and its invaluable to my day. Don't know it that's an oddity, but I don't know anybody else who does it.
Otherwise.. I pick the little chunks of onions out of most anything I eat, like tomato sauce and whatnot. Don't know why, they just bug the shit out of me.

When I hang the washing out I must seperate the clothes by person first, and then start with my Boyfriends clothes at the top end and work towards my Sons items down at the bottom of the garden...I then hang them from large to small and group identical garments together. I attempted to break this ridiculous cycle last week and ended up re-doing the entire line because it was just too much of a distraction for me.
I find it difficult to eat things that are sliced wonky. If I slice cucumber and I 'mis-slice' a piece I just cannot bring myself to eat it...it always ends up in the bin.
Like Fervors I have to have the TV volume set to an even number.

Ah, Jeopardy try-outs. It's been a long-time dream of mine to be on the show, especially the College Tournament. My college career just ended, and I only managed to take the online test only once... I either had stuff going on, or simply forgot about the other times it was administered. I took the test for the general show, not college, and did not advance (though I thought I did pretty well).
I was on my university's college bowl (quiz bowl) team, and we all took the test once. Only our coach, a Harvard PhD, and absolute genius (and dead ringer for the PC guy in the Mac-PC commercials) advanced. He advanced all the way to the end but never got called back. He also said the hardest part was getting the buzzer timing down. Apparently, you just have to be in sync with the person who "releases" the question and allows your buzzer to activate. If you buzz in before that, you're buzzing ability is delayed for a couple of seconds.
Quick College Bowl glory story - we beat Rice University in regionals my sophomore year. Yeeeaaahh. What I often forget to bring up is that I actually wasn't present for that competition as I had Mock Trial regionals the same weekend.
Also, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire held tryouts in Dallas (where I went to college) a couple of summers ago. Unfortunately, I wasn't in town and had to miss it. A friend of mine, who was on another college bowl team which mine had absolutely demolished, managed to advance and ended up making it on the show. Feeling confident that my trivia knowledge is superior to his, I've often wondered "what if" I had been there for the tryout. Ah well.

I can't stand having dry hands. I always carry a bottle of lotion because I hate how it feels when my fingers are dry and they rub against each other.
As somebody who loves to create stuff, whether it's working on a film or playing music, there will be times where I'll down right hate something of my own that I loved a couple days before. It's weird, but I get bouts of self-loathing of anything I make and try to find as many faults as I can so I can "fix" the problem, but some times this really just hinders my progress and isn't helpful. It happened to me just recently, I practiced with my friend who is a drummer and I was just feeling pretty down about everything even though I have really enjoyed playing the songs with him and he was playing just fine.

I have a similar problem... When I edit video, I'll spend hours to find that what I've put together looks like shit. But I stop, have a good night of sleep, and when I go back the next day I find that what I did the previous day looks great. Maybe it's fatigue, but it has now turned into a bit of a routine/tradition... Now I work until I feel like what I've done isn't right, stop, and go back to it later.
I've almost become superstitious about it; if I feel like I'm cutting well, something's not right.

When I edit/mix music that I'm doing, same thing happens to me. I'm constantly tweaking and shifting audio levels on each track, selecting which take is better. Then, I think ANOTHER take is better and put that one in instead... it goes on for quite a while.
So, I take a break and come back to it a little later with a "fresher" mind and that helps a lot.

I tend to twich my arm a lot when i do too much scrolling down on a site.
I hate being in a room with the door open, even if it's just a crack I'll walk over and shut it, particularly bugs me when I'm trying to watch a movie.
I hate mobile phones. I do have one, but I only ever take it anywhere when I KNOW I'm going to need to use it, hearing other people talking on their phones annoys the living hell out of me.
At every cinema I go to regularly I have a particular seat that I try to sit in, central, two thirds back. I went with a friend a while back and he wanted to sit three rows further forward, I didn't get comfortable at all during that screening.
I had two liver transplants when I was 11, so I don't drink, ever. I'm used to it, but it's fucking irritating to have to explain it. Not looking forward to that conversation at university.
I get VERY nervous in social situations, especially around women I'm attracted to. I'm usualy talkative, articulate and pretty funny, but in large gatherings I go very quiet and generally find myself a corner to sit in. No wonder I'm fucking single, eh?
I have almost no spacial awareness, I'm very bad at catching, my handwriting is pretty poor, and I've decided not to learn to drive because I'd be a danger to myself and others.
I'm only five feet seven tall, but without my glasses I can't see my own feet.
And anywhere but here the fact that I've seen something over 7000 movies is considered odd. That's why I love this place.

experation dates play a big role in the decision to eat anything....definently love fresh food.
