View Full Version : Blu-Ray soon...
i am thinking about getting a Blu-Ray player soon and i have a few questions
1) what are the movies like look the best on Blu-Ray? i already have an extensive DVD collection and Blu-Rays are expensive, so i only want to get the ones that would look the best such as maybe Wall-E or TDK
2) do normal DVDs look better on a Blu-Ray player or about the same?

Based on watching my uncles Blu Rays.
1) From what I have seen Apocalypto, Tropic Thunder, Harry Potter films, 2001: A Space Odyseey, The Fifth Element and Australia all look awesome. I haven't seen that many I'm slowly building a collection while saving for a Hi-Def TV.
2) They look better.

This will probably be moved to the DVD & Home Theater section, but here's a link to some good Blu Ray discs from another thread.

The Dark Knight, Batman Begins, Iron Man, 3:10 To Yuma, The Incredible Hulk, No Country For Old Men, The Departed, and LA Confidential are the best looking Blu Rays that I own. Apparently the Disney/Pixar movies look fantastic on Blu Ray.
I would tell you dont try to spend your money on replacing all of your old DVDs because some Blu Rays dont look that much better than standard DVDs and plus its too fucking expensive. Go to bluray.com it has reviews and a breakdown of every movie on bluray telling you about the picture and audio. Newer movies look better on Blu Ray with some older movies its a little iffy. Honestly I wished I just gotten the Godfather Coppola Restoration on DVD instead of Blu Ray because I couldnt tell that much of a difference in the picture, it looks fantastic but its not High Def by any means so alot of older movies I wouldnt spend the money on trying to replace although if you dont already own the movie you may want to buy the Blu Ray but I would do research and see if its worth the extra 15 bucks or whatever.

Just a bit of advice, instead of spending 25-30 bucks on blu rays at best buy or any other store, buy them off of amazon. You can get most any blu ray for under 20 bucks, usually for around 15.
As for some awesome blu rays, I'd say Sunshine, both new Bond films, the Harry Potters, Serenity, and the Fall. In addition to those that you mentioned.

Agreed. I started buying blu-rays off Amazon starting last year and have bought some for cheaper prices than DVDs. You get great bargains there.

Always look online for deals. I have purchased many Blu Rays on Amazon, Ebay, Deep Discount, and a few other places. I would say the majority of mine cost $15 or less, including shipping. It is just browins for the best price. And remember, buying on Amazon in bulk, more than $25, will get you free shipping.
Shopping in stores will cost you much more. I can't even go to Wal-Mart, who I ate, but they charge $30 for a Blu Ray. I tell them I can get the same thing online for half the price or less. They don't like it, but hey, if I can get the same thing for cheaper, I will. They don't pay their employees enough to hike the price.

I've been impressed with the image quality of all the Blu Rays i own . Not only is there an upgrade in pq , but the soundtracks are also excellent .
It is weird , because i always felt like R Moore was younger when he made Moonraker , now i see just how old he was :) . You see every little detail and potmark , you ill see things you never noticed before because of the increased detail . Upscaling alone won't give you this effect , in my opinion at least . If the video info is not there , no amount of upscaling will recreate watching something in 720 p or above . It's still impressive though when you watch a standard dvd on a blu player .
Now back to the sound , there are moments when the new soundtracks don't seem to be an improvement over their former mixes on dvd , but overall , i am in awe at the upgrade in sound . FF: spirits within , yes , most people disregarded it because it wasn't based on any of the games , but the uncompressed pcm 5.1 soundtrack on the bd is fantastic and immersive . Even if you hate the film , you have to hear the soundtrack , one of the best i've heard so far on the next gen discs .
I don't have a receiver that decodes the new standards such as D True and Dts Ma , so i bought a blu player with built audio decoders for those formats . All you need is 5.1 or 7.1 analogue inputs on your receiver , this way you can send the decoded signal from the blu player . Don't want to go into detail , it's just that keep that in mind when shopping around , you may not have to buy a new receiver in order to experience the new sound mixes . If you want to know more about my setup and how i configured it , pm me .
I'll end with this , if you love movies , the upgrade to blu ray is a must , and most times the double , triple or even quadruple dip ( Dawn original :) ) is worth the price .
Tdk , FF : SW , 2001 , Quarantine ( another immersive and powerful sound mix ) , and even the Batman Quadrilogy all have new life on this new format . Batman and Robin , one of the best cheesefests ever created is mind blowing on blu , i watch it on a consistent basis now ;) . That's how good it looks and sounds .
I'm hooked on blu , just hope they don't come out with a new format in another two years , i'm just starting to enjoy this one .
ps - stay away from Best Buy when it comes to blu ray they are always more expensive than anyone else , but i surprisingly , have found some great deals at Fye . 10 dollars for 2001 , can't beat it . Of course , most of the time you will get better prices online , but there are still some deals to be found at the brick and mortar stores .

I wanted to mention that you can browse the Best Buy website and see what is on sale, or even pricing for their movies. They have movies around $10-$15. They have dropped in prices a lot.

Make sure you google your TV model and check out how to calibrate it, it can make the world of difference when viewing films :)
Also stick to the interweb to buy blurays as the high street will rape you raw :D

You're right...
But I think 'The Shining' is still one of the best looking blu-rays I've ever fucking seen. And also:
T2: Skynet edition
Iron Man
TDK
Rambo
Troy
The Last Samurai
Fucking glorious
Fucking. Glorious.

I agree with a ton of the movies that others have mentioned so far, but the ones that no one has brought up yet are the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy. They look amazing in HD.
