I was watching "Cleaner" yesterday and there's a scene where Eva Mendez starts sobbing about something. However, there were no tears. Now I know she's a bad actress but it reminded me that I see this a lot in movies.
I don't know about any of you, but when I see somebody crying or sobbing, tears are usually the first thing to happen. Hell, when anybody feels any emotion that's very strong, tears probably come out.
Seeing these actors cry with no tears really takes me out of the moment. It alerts me to the fact that they are, in fact, acting; and acting badly at that. Even Russell Crowe in "Gladiator", I thought that was a terrible display of crying. It's like he used snot and saliva in place of tears. Why can't everybody cry like Hugh Jackman in "The Fountain"? That's how you cry! That scene is always heart-wrenching to me because it seems very genuine, like it's supposed to. Even those terrible actresses on the spanish soaps cry better than a lot of Hollywood actors/actresses.
I don't want to see another scene that I'm supposed to be emotionally invested in feature an actor that cries without tears. I need to be convinced. So chop up an onion, throw pepper spray in your eyes, pinch your nipples if you have to! I don't care what you have to do! I want to see tears! Cry like you mean it or don't cry at all, ga' dammit!

Haha agreed!

I remember watching Crowe's snot/drooling scene when I saw Gladiator in the theater and lost my appetite.

It always kills me when people are trying not to cry in movies. Like Emma Thompson in Love Actually. I'm sure the are loads of better examples, but that's all I got now.

I wish more actors could cry on command. It's not that hard.

For a minute, I thought the thread title referred to Eva Mendes' face.

I think that there's a special place in hell for actors who can't cry on demand.
And for them,
I shed no tears.

....buncha non-crying bastards......

I think she's hot, she just can't cry, or act.

FACT: when actors fail to cry, they compensate by drooling and spitting all over themselves and/or their co-stars.

For me tears are usually the last thing to come. I have to be pretty choked up before I start crying tears.

***Spoiler***

That's how you cry convincingly. Just thinking of that scene - even out of context - makes me feel wretched.

Yeah, that's true. You get red and glassy eyed a lot of times too. Seems like it's a director's issue too, since I'm sure we can all think of a half dozen ways off the tops of our heads to recreate that effect with a little movie magic.

I think the most intense crying i've seen was Anna Chlumsky in My Girl, though shw was a child actor at the time and i would think that a child might beabel to tap those emotions a bit easier.
