I have a Vizio. They're really nice if you're on a smaller budget. Had mine for close to 2 years, haven't had any problems. It's kept fresh looking, etc.

Vizio tv's are really great technically, visually and asethically. I've had a 32" 720p for just about ayear and have basically no complaints. The darks are nice, and the lights are better. I have a Sony bluray connected with it and HD on it looks really really great. Same foes for video games. This tv wasthe first time I have connected a system to an HD tv and I was floored.
Vizio came out of nowhere and really seems to be a bog competitor with the big names. I work the overnight at my local target and we've been stocking them like crazy.

The two best brands you will hear from most people that know a lot about TVs are Sony and Samsung. If you want to buy the best that is. But, as you say, Sony is out of your range, I am assuming Samsung too, Vizio is not a bad choice.
I have heard a mixed reaction from people on this brand. The picture quality is actually very good for the price, audio is ok. Having friends who work in electronics, they are usually the TV brand that comes in to get fixed the most. A friend of mine who does electronic repairs for the local stores has said he usually averages a Vizio TV 10 times a month.
I do have friends who own Vizios and have not had a single issue with them. But, like anything in life, there is always going to be some faulty ones.
So, get the warranty just in case. I never understood why people pay huge amounts of money on electronics, then complain when the store won't do anything after the 30 days are up to replace it.

Samsung has come down in price recently , you can get a 32 inch series 3 one for about 450 . How much cheaper will the same size Vizio be . I would pay a little more to get the full experience . I had a 32inch Sam and nothing compares , it's what Hd is supposed to look like . I'm not being hyperbolic when i state that the colors are stunning and the detail is sublime . The only one that came close to matching it was a 37 in LG i had ( i recommend that company also ). Toshiba , that one blew , washed out colors and the like .
I would wait around for a good deal on a Samsung , trust me , it's worth it , they are the best Hdtvs on the market .

Excellent choice , you'll be more than pleased with it's performance and durability . You'll see the electric bill go down a bit because LGs have excellent power ratings .
Make sure you calibrate it . Check on line to see if they have calibration settings that will give you the best picture . Out of the box , it may be too bright .
