Slayer's Diabolus In Musica...I don't consider myself a Slayer fan, but this is a brutal album. "Bitter Peace" is one of the heaviest songs of all time period. I haven't listened to God Hates Us All in years, but I'll be revisiting it soon thanks to DIB.

Yes, there is a new Slayer album upon us. I'm not crazy about the two tracks that have been released thus far. The production is terrible. Coincidentally, World Painted Blood is being knobbed and twiddled by Greg Fidelman, one of the people responsible for the sonic mess that is Death Magnetic. I can't believe this asshole is getting work.

I've always thought Iron Maiden's BRAVE NEW WORLD is a criminally underrated album that is right up there with their best stuff.
Particularly Side 2.

Oh. I was hoping this would be a thread about the Slayer record, but that's cool, too. If you do mention an album you think is underrated, explain why you think it's underrated. I'd like to focus on well-known bands/albums that no one ever talks about.

I'll be back with another pick.

Aerosmith - Nine Lives

This one got lost in between the Alicia Silverstone videos and the enormity of "I Don't Wanna Miss a Thing." The songwriting is excellent. The melodies are extremely catchy, the production isn't too glossy, and Steven Tyler sounds incredible. And it rocks! "Hole in My Soul" is right up there with "Dream On" when it comes to Aero-ballads, and it beats anything on Just Push Play. Also, I appreciate the darker strains of "Sweet Taste of India" and the title track. There are a few duds in the middle of the album, but overall, Nine Lives is criminally underrated.

Nine Lives rules! I have a copy with the original cover I got when it first came out. It still rocks whenever I put it on. Steven is wailing his ass off on the title track, which is one of the most badass songs Aerosmith ever wrote. Agree 100% on "Taste of India" and "Hole in My Soul". Come to think of it, it's probally my favorite Aerosmith album.

I think people forget how good Nine Lives actually is, it's not my favorite Aerosmith album but I still love it.

I really liked God Hates us All. I never understood the hate it got.

Interesting fact: God Hates us All was released on Tuesday, September 11th. That is also the day I bought it (yeah, I went shopping that day).

I swear to Satan, you and I are brothers. We're too cool for school.

Yeah, I remember God Hates Us All being released on 9/11. Pretty crazy.

Name others, folks!

Rush - Caress Of Steel

Probably the most criminally underrated album of all time.

Weight got the band a lot of exposure, and "Liar" in particual gained the band a lot of new fans. Well, when this dropped a lot of the so called "fans" threw the band under the bus because this didn't contain Liar Part 2. Any fan of the band knows they never stuck to just one sound, and each album had something the last one didn't. Sure, this is RB at their most mellow, but this is also the "classic" line-up at their most musically advanded and mature. Melvin Gibbs drives a lot of the tracks with monster, jazz like basslines, almost playing a call and response type of game with Chris Haskett's innovative guitar work, see "On My Way to the Cage" and the smooth as fuck "During a City".

Sim Cain is laid back on the kit for most of the album, but this style fits so perfectly with Gibbs' bass. Tasteful is the word for the rythems. This one also finds Henry doing a more spoken sytle of vocal, dare I say actual singing, and while I admit it dosen't have the impact of his Hard Volume shreik, taken in context with the lyrics, the delivery fits the songs to a T.

There was no need for me to write that much, but this one gets overlooked unfairly if you ask me.

Of all time?

You should check out this list, my friend. I'd say a lot of the stuff on it is underrated - the albums I listened to, at least: http://www.fastnbulbous.com/wire100.htm

I'm still amazed that First Utternace by Comus and World of Echo by Arthur Russell (two records on that list) haven't made it on to more best-of lists. Great fucking records that I highly recommended. John Fahey's The Transfiguration of Blind Joe Death is also a must-listen.

Well when Rush toured on it they had such high hopes for it but they didn't do very well and they dubbed it the "Down The Tubes" Tour.

What the fuck were people on that they couldn't appreciate THAT? They should have been drinking fucking hemlock.

This one is consistently bashed by boneheads. Yes, it's a rock album, but it's a good rock album. It's full of melody, killer leads, and a thing called variety. The songs actually sound different from one another. Gasp! Dave Mustaine gives his most colorful vocal performance to date. The lyrics are tepid, but I'll take overwrought love songs over preachy filibusters anyday (United Abominations, I'm looking at you). Better than Youthanasia, in my opinion.

Type O Negative - Life Is Killing Me

This one totally flew under the radar if you ask me. While it lacks the bleak dirges that made up most of World Coming Down, it more than makes up for it in terms of catchiness. There are some serious melodies on this one, songs like "(We Were) Electrocute", "IFDKMIGTHTKY (Gimmie That)", "Anesthesia", and "Todd's Ship Gods (Above All Things)" will be stuck in your head for days. The Beatles influence is in full force here as well, "Less Than Zero (<0)" could have been a Lennon composition. The two songs I still can't quite get into are "Nettie" and "...A Dish Best Served Coldly" but other than that, exellent album. One more thing, it's great how Pete can make a killer vocal melody by just saying TV characters name's ("How Could She?")

Ah, interesting choice. I love "Nettie." The lyrics are heartbreaking. I find the poppier tracks to be bland, but it's still a great record.

Agreed on Cryptic Writings; though I usually skip "Almost Honest" and "Use The Man"(don't try doing alternative Dave).

Another album I will say:

Blue Oyster Cult - The Revolution By Night

I like it, but I much prefer Youthanasia.

From that mid-ninties stretch, I think it goes: Youthanasia > Countdown to Extinction > Cryptic Writings

I'm not sure if it's underrated. It's probably not even rated.

I agree.

Slayers Diabolus In Musica is pretty good. It took me a few listens to enjoy it. I dont listen to Slayer as much as I used to, so I stick with thier classics anymore. I hate Divine Intervention. Terrible album.

Melvins - Stoner Witch

Not sure how many Melvins fans we got on here, but I'll throw this one into the mix as well. I don't really see a lot of talk about this one, probably because it came right after the masterpiece that is Houdini. It's one you really have to pay attention too, give a few listens to realize the genius that it is. Every song is it's own genre. We've got hard rockin' rockers ("Queen, "Revolve"), droning sludge ("At the Stake"), fuzzy noise rock ("Magic Pig Detective"), a wicked relaxing ambient-ish track ("Shevil"), one of the most badass instrumentals ever, albiet too short ("June Bug") and so on. As is the case with most Melvins, they never stick to one sound, and one of amazing things about the band, and this album in particular, no matter what style the song is, it never sounds forced.

I don't consider Pinkerton to be underrated. It may have been overlooked by the mainstream media, but Weezer die-hards routinely drool over that record. In my opinion, Green is underrated. It typifies what Weezer should sound like in my little world.

Being a completely obsessed Rush fan I can tell you for a fact that Hold Your Fire and Signals are two of the most underrated albums in history. When they added keyboards to the mix the fair weather fans seemed to lose interest but these are two of my most beloved Rush albums and musically they are genius as usual.

After your other post on another thread describing Rush music as whiny and unlistenable nothing you have to say about them or any piece of music they have released is relevant to me. Your obviously tone deaf and are probably jamming to Taylor Swifts latest track right now.
