I was just looking at some of the screenplays that Judd Apatow did before he hit it big with Virgin, and he wrote some real stinkers. for instance, Cable Guy. I mean I liked it ok, but that movie just piled it on. Also, Celtic Pride? great concept, horrible writing. It seems like when he keeps in his clan, he writes good stuff, but when he goes off on his own, he sucks ass majority of the time.

He has matured a lot and his screenplay's since becoming really famous have all been dynamite IMO. The only screenplays that he has been credited with since he became really famous that I didn't think were good were Fun with Dick and Jane and You Don't Mess With the Zohan, but both of those films have three writers, so who knows how responsible he actually is for both of those scripts. There's no doubt about it though, he's at his best when he is flying solo (writing and directing). Each one of the films that he has written and directed by himself have been well received critically, and 2/3 of them have been huge financial successes. There's no doubt the guy is immensely talented. I think his solo written and directorial efforts have just gotten better and better. He really got on the map with The 40 Year Old Virgin, improved even more with Knocked Up, and his new film Funny People is now my favorite of his and is my second favorite film of the year behind Inglourious Basterds. Funny People didn't work for some people, but I still can't get it out of my head. I thought it was unbelievably good and I am dying to see it for a third time.

Whoa, wait a minute. First of all, he didn't write Cable Guy. Second of all, Cable Guy was fucking awesome.

I kind of liked Celtic Pride, I don't think it was horrible by any means.

Anyways, Apatow started off writing for the pretty good Ben Stiller Show, and the even funnier Larry Sanders Show. Apatow's track record has been pretty solid from the start. The only film that he's been involved with that I've absolutely hated was Don't Mess with the Zohan.

Wasn't he a producer on The Cable Guy and not writer?

Huh, just IMDBed it, and he was producer. One more reason to love Apatow! :D

Something else is that we don't know whether or not he wrote something on assignment, or if it was a screenplay he pushed. Also, we don't know how well his script was treated. Tarantino wrote Natural Born Killers, which I liked, but not for the reasons I like Tarantino's screenplays.

He did work on it though, and basically, all the cool scenes were his idea :) Just wasn`t credited...

Edit: That is, he was brought in for a re-write.

You didn't know that? Stone did butcher the script though

"Butcher" is taking it a bit lightly. I often equate it to watching a forced anal fisting...
