Directed by Ruben Fleischer

Written by Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese

Genre: Comedy/Horror

Plot Outline: Two men have found a way to survive a world overrun by zombies. Columbus is a big wuss -- but when you're afraid of being eaten by zombies, fear can keep you alive. Tallahassee is an AK-totin', zombie-slayin' badass whose single determination is to get the last Twinkie on earth. As they join forces with Wichita and Little Rock, who have also found unique ways to survive the zombie mayhem, they will have to determine which is worse: relying on each other or succumbing to the zombies.

Starring: Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, Abigail Breslin

Rated R for zombie horror violence/gore and language.

Runtime: 88 minutes

Looks like a ton of fun. I'll definitely be checking this one out.

This movie is fantastic. It's directed with such style that it transforms a trope like super slo-mo (so tired in 300 and Watchmen) into refreshing and eye-popping carnage. It's amazing that in only about 80 minutes, they have a nuts and bolts apocalyptic, zombie killfest with really inventive scenes of violence and bloodshed, but also a solid road trip and touching friendship story. All the actors are great, particularly Woody Harrelson and the one cameo is magnificent and laugh out loud funny. I loved Jesse Eisenberg's narration, the visual cues, and the excellent use of music, all leading up to the thrilling finale set piece with its buckets of gore and made with such flamboyance. It may lack genuine tension and scares, but it is slick and it never loses its momentum and keeps the laughs and sight gags coming until the very end.

I just got back from the theatre everybody and this movie KICKED MY ASS!

An absolutely genius zombie film with terrific writing, incredible acting from all (Woody Harrelson has immortalized himself in this flick), blood, guts, amusement parks and the greatest celebrity cameo of all-time...hands-down.

I haven't laughed so hard in a long time and the sold-out crowd around me just ate the whole movie up with a huge round of applause at the end. ZOMBIELAND is pure genius! (Did I also mention that Emma Stone is HOT!)

Final Rank: 10/10 Wouldn't have changed a thing.

my new favorite zombie film. holy crap it might be one of the best movies of the year zombieland gets a solid 10/10 from me. this movie has it all comedy, romance, horror and action. see this movie

my only problem with this movie is how stupid these people are. in a real zombie apocalypse they would be dead. everyone knows to avoid cities as the zom population is to high.

**** out of ***** (8/10)

Zombieland may very well be the most fun you will have at the movies this year. The film's combination of action and comedy with horror elements is done in such a uniquely outrageous way that it is infectious. Anything wrong with the film? Well, yes. It is definitely a bit unfocused. Act I is a straight-up horror comedy, with plenty of outrageous physical humor. Act II almost ignores the zombies altogether and becomes a more character-driven comedy in the vain of a Judd Apatow picture. Act III is basically an action comedy. The zombies are back, yet a lot of the horror elements are still missing. It is still a lot of fun, though. Thankfully, the ending ties together all of these disparaging elements quite well, but one can't help but feel like they saw two different films sandwhiched together at times. In short, every element of this film is outstanding, yet the whole does not equal the sum of its parts. These rather glaring problems will probably hurt this rather excellent film in terms of its replay value. Having said that, I appreciate the fact that a film of this nature went the extra mile to make the characters fairly three-dimensional and sympathetic, and Woody's Harrelson's character is one of the most memorable movie characters in a while. Despite its flaws, Zombieland is a great horror-action-comedy and shouldn't be missed.

It was good and had good performances as well but it just wasn't as funny as I thought it would be and I found many of the jokes to fail. The opening credits were done really well and I thought I was in for a very stylish and humorous good time...I was half right. Don't get me wrong as it did have some good laughs especially the cameo. The cameo was hands down the best part of the film for me, the whole situation was good stuff. I also thought the facebook joke was pretty funny. There is also an interesting touch of sentimentality in the film.

Overall it was just an all right film with a couple of high points.

6.5 out of 10.

I'm choosing to believe Woody Harrelson pretty much just played himself in this flick, and as such I want him in my survival party once the zombocalypse kicks off.

Was I the only one a little disappointed that Tallahassee didn't martyr himself in the ticket booth? I mean, it's cool they didn't go the obvious route, but the tension and aesthetic of that moment were just sooooo perfect, I wanted him to go out like a G.

Woody Harrelson was funny, but Eisenberg's "nervous guy" act is getting a little old. Fucking awesome movie. What made it even better that it started in FUCKING TEXAS, and I'm here in Austin at the Alamo Drafthouse watching it, and employees dressed up like zombies were walking around scaring people. Everybody cheered and went 'Hook 'em Horns!' when they heard the kid went to college in Austin. I think the audience and being able to drink alcohol during this movie really helped in keeping me entertained. Woody Harrelson is a god among men, and there's an AWESOME cameo in the second half.

Well, the differences between the two movies can be narrowed down to two simple things: One's American, one's British. That right there is where the differences in their approach to humor resides.

Yep. America's approach to humor tends to be more based on one-liners (jokes) and action (visual humor), whereas British humor is generally more subversive and dry. Also, American humor tends to derive its humor from exaggeration, whereas British humor derives it from understatement. Zombieland exaggerates on many levels the conventions of Zombie films, and purposely makes the violence ridiculously over-the-top to create much of the exaggerated humor. The sequence in Shaun of the Dead where we see Shaun go to the local mart and back without even noticing the chaos and destruction around him is an example of humor through understatement. Of course, there are plenty of exceptions on either side.

I havent had this much fun with the undead since 2004's Dawn of the Dead
That film had small touches of horror and took itself more seriously than Zombieland
which mixes a BIG sense of humor with horror.
Jesse Eisenberg as (Columbus) one of the last survivors of one of those viruses that has reduced mostly every human to bleeding prune faces, and human flesh eaters is very funny as a super geek. His narration throughout the film, full of self deprication, and tips on surving zombies is one of the best parts of the film
He soon hooks up with a take no prisoners, zombie killer,in search of a good Twinkie
named Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson) The banter between the two is hilarious for the most part
Adding two the fun are two sisters they encounter Wichita (Emma Stone),who's big beautiful eyes and toughness gets Columbus's virgin heart a thumping and Little Rock(Abigail Breslin Definitely trying to break free of her cute girl movie role mode)
As the four journey to a land that may be zombie free, they encounter a Hollywood star, which leads to one of the best, and funniest big screen cameos i have ever seen.
There are a few plot holes, some predictable moments, and the action slows down a bit in the middle, but like me you will likely be having so much fun you can easily ignore the flicks aforementioned missteps.
Scale of 1-10 an 8½

Zombieland - 8/10

A complete blast... with brains. It's refreshing to see a popcorn flick take it to the next level by having a sharp and intelligent script, great direction and solid performances. Zombieland is a hilarious, violent, smart and stylish. All of the actors have great chemistry and all of their characters are fully developed in only 80 minutes. That's not something that happens every day. The movie moves along at a rip-roaring pace, but it's always very tight and never sloppy. There is also a cameo in the second half of the film that had me in stitches. I was always chuckling throughout and occasionally there were some big laughs, but that cameo just killed me. Zombieland is a perfect mix of horror and comedy and is definitely a film that fans of both genres will not want to miss.

While I enjoyed it (7/10)...one thing has been bothering the hell out of me.

I'm a huge horror buff and I usually, 90% of the time, brush off stupid moves by the characters. But this movie had some of the most brain-numblingly idiotic moves in a horror movie I've seen lately.

SPOILERSSSSSSSSS!!!!

So the sisters decide to break into the amusement park and turn EVERYTHING on thus making it a zombie magnet. Ok, I'll forgive 'em. They have to set up the finale right? But then they go on the drive their only escape vehicle into water simply because there were a few zombies on the roof and put themselves on a ride that pretty much makes them fucking worms on a hook. You guys know what I'm talking about. I mean, I really never ever let moves like this bother me in movies of this nature but watching this I couldn't help but be pissed off that the girls were so fucking stupid when they were set up as resourceful survivors earlier in the film. Might have been my mood (I had had a bad fucking day before I went to watch it) but these moves severely hindered my enjoyment of this otherwise above average flick.

Here's my review if anybody is interested........

Zombie movies are awesome. From the amazing Dawn of the Dead to the pretty good 28 Days Later, some of these movies are just classics that involve the walking dead. There has been a transition from the slow shuffling Romero zombies to the more modern fast moving rage infected in Danny Boyle's 28 Days Later. Yet, there has been movies who take the aspect of the zombie apocalypse and have fun with it, namely Edgar Wright's hilarious Shaun of the Dead. Yet, many people can assume that the whole "zombie era" in movies may be dying off. Well, when Zombieland kicks on the screen, it follows the same ideas that most movies of this kind would do, but with a fun comedic flair that just makes it a good time at the movies.

the movie follows the world that has already gone to hell due to a zombie outbreak, and we are kept up to date through the narration of Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg), a gawky obsessive compulsive teenager who, over time, abides by a personal set of rules in order to avoid being lunch for the raging zombies. He meets up with Tallahassee (Woody Harlesson) who is basically the polar opposite of Columbus's rule-abiding person towards treating the world of zombies, basically going gung-ho over safety first. they decide to team up and head off to their goals, with Columbus heading back to his hometown and trying to find his, hopefully alive, family, and Tallahassee...well, it's better if you see the movie to see what his goal is.While on their trek, they become acquainted with Whitica and Little Rock (Emma Stone and Abagail Breslin), who join them to find some semblance of safety in the choatic world of Zombieland.

Now, while there is some good ol fashion shoot em up zombie action going on, the story and characters are a bit more prominent, and they are pretty damn hilarious. From Columbus's rules being featured throughout the movie, to the hilarious banter that Tallahassee has with everyone, the human interaction is just as much fun as the zombie killing. Don't get me wrong, the action sequences kick ass, but I was having a great time with how everyone was playing off each other in the flick as well. Hell, there was even some revelations that occur in the movie that, while not overbearing, brought some levity towards the comedy as well.

I must also praise a hilarious cameo in this movie that cracked me up good. Most of you may have known who that person is by now, but if you don't, keep yourself in the dark on it. However, if you do find out, I wouldn't be too annoyed. I was spoiled on the cameo, yet the antics that occurred involving said person was still pretty damn funny. I have a feeling that my fellow cousins, who I chat about movies with when I see them, will find it pretty hilarious.

Another thing I have to praise is the sets that show the desolation and destruction that the zombie epidemic has caused. For his first movie, Ruben Fleischer definitely created a great post-apocalyptic world that these characters were trekking through. Add to the fun action scenes, (particularly the awesome climax at the end) and you got a director that will probably have big things in the future.

I think the number 1 thing that annoyed me about this movie was how short it was. I would've have bells and whistles on for a solid 2 hour movie, introducing the 4 characters in their own special way. then again,,maybe it was best that they kept it short and sweet. The only other annoyances were some silly character decisions that brought around the final big spectacle, but nothing too harsh. Also, there was a scene in the trailer involving Woody Harlleson that always cracked me up when I saw it, but it was left out in the movie. Hopefully, it's on a possible unrated DVD.

Overall, this movie was just a good time. It has zombie action, great cast, and good laughs. It's a movie like this that just show the public that zombie movies are not going stale just yet.

9/10

*********************SPOILERS*****************

Yea that part was stupid, I remember when they drove into the water for no fucking reason saying "what?" and shaking my head. And that was probably the worst ride they could have got on, it only goes up and down and then stopping it from going down just means they're stuck there to either starve to death or get eaten by the zombies.

Gee, I don't know SLAM ON THE BREAKS...or at least wait till you're out of the fucking park that is swarming with zombies to ditch the ride? Why not just sit down and and read a book while waiting to get eaten?

Like I said, I was in a pissy mood when I watched the movie so maybe thats why it bothered me. Or maybe I'll still think its stupid after a rewatch. Only time will tell.

Yeah, I also found some of the stupid and inexplicable decisions some of the characters made to be quite distracting.

I mean, they've made it this long, and then they intentionally break every rule in the book? That's a bit too much disbelief to suspend, even for a movie with zombies in it..

I didn't understand how both of them could be on rides at the same time. I laughed but I was confused at the same time. It didn't take away from my enjoyment of the movie, though.

I agree. This and the decision to go on the drop-zone machine, to get away from the zombies. I've been on rides like so and they go very quick so what that happened, it took me out of the movie for a bit. Didn't harm my feelings toward it too much though.

the weirdest part was that they acted suprised every time the ride started to go down. did they not realize it would do that?

anyway this movie rules.

That fucking asshat Michael 'FUCKING' Phillips gave away who the cameo was in At the Movies last night. GODDAMIT! And I've been able to avoid finding out who it was before then.

That really pissed me off too. Phillips uses "It's the worst kept secret!" as his excuse but, I'm a massive movie fan--I'm among you guys at least once a day--and I had no friggin' clue what the cameo was until Philips gave it away on At the Movies. I still haven't seen it and that spoiler really pissed me off. I honestly would have never expected it had I not heard it from Philips. A.O. Scott even gave a brief look and moan of disbelief when Philips ruined it during their review.

Was the cameo really THAT secretive before Zombieland was released? He was listed in the cast on IMDB ages ago and I'm pretty sure there were a few mentions of his name in the thread in the Upcoming Movie Talk section months ago.

Somehow I didn't stumble upon that information. I don't check imdb all that often as I'm not that big of a fan of the site, so maybe that's why. It’s not like this guest actor was in the trailers or TV spots or anything.

I still love At the Movies and Philips is good in my book, but I'm still pouting. A.O. Scott made note that there was a nice cameo and didn't want to ruinit for audiences but Philips followed up, immediately after that comment, and revealed who it was. The one thing I really loved about the review, however, was that A.O. Scott and Michael Philips had their first all-out argument over the quality of a film.

This was a really fun movie to watch. It was funny, graphic, creative, and the characters made it watchable. Woody Harrelson is great as a guy trying to survive in a world full of zombes. Jesse Eisenberg is somewhat of a sidekick to Harrelson, and the movie kind of follows him around in that you're constantly being reminded of the rules he's come up with about living in "Zombieland" - many in funny and/or creative ways. And the Bill Murray sequence is brilliant; I loved it. This movie feels like a zombie movie, but then again it doesn't. It's more of a comedy than a horror movie, but it works in that the characters, lines, and situations the characters find themselves in are hilarious.

A fun ride and a guilty pleasure. Woody Harrellson is great as always. Emma Stone is sexy as hell and Jesse Eisenberg is taking over Michael Cera. Includes one of my favorite cameos of all time. Will def pick a copy of it up on dvd when it comes out.

One of the funniest movies I've seen in a long time. Loved the cast (Murray's cameo caught me completely by surprise and was by far my favorite moment in the film) and certain scenes were just genious (Harrellson taking on the zombie hoard solo.) A fun time at the movies. 9/10

I like Michael Cera, but I like Eisenberg SO much more. He is fantastic in this movie. He was really good too in the sadly overlooked gem The Hunting Party. Woody Harrelson is fucking badass here, Emma Stone is drop dead gorgeous and adds sex appeal plus she and Abigail Breslin couldn't be more appealing even when they are conning people.

I will say I was slightly disappointed by the cameo. I won't give away who it is even though it's already been given away including in the post above me. But while I enjoyed those scenes very much, it also got a little silly IMO. It was good but not great.

Equally enjoyable were cameos by Mike White and the incredibly sexy Amber Heard.

As far as zombie comedies goes, I do think this actually beats Shaun of the Dead. Not by much, but I did enjoy myself more. This movie is a gas and a blast from start to finish!

Dude, honestly, I'm not sure I can take your opinions seriously anymore. I can understand Hot Fuzz not being your thing, but to simply call it an awful movie shows that you virtually nothing about what quality filmmaking consists of, or that you didn't put the the film in its proper British context. For example, I didn't much care for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, but I recognize that it was a very well made, high quality film.

Loved it. Laughed out loud throughout the movie, although the first half was better. The two things i wasn't crazy about, were 1. The inevidable love sequence between Jesse and Emma and 2. How the rides magically ran themselves. These things did not ruin the movie at all though.

I was very Happy with Jesse Eisenberg's performance, because I have not lliked his past characters and I do not like Michael Cera. (although I did enjoy The Squid and the Whale and Adventureland...and I love Arrested Development)

Bill friggin Murray. That's all I need to say. Definitely the most surprising cameo I've seen. He is in my top 5 of favorite actors. It's just not something you would expect.

Woody Harrelson was my motivation behind seeing this. I love that man. He's funny as hell while delivering a kick ass action scene. And it was nice to see Abigail Breslin in something not so nice. Don't get me wrong, I loved her in Little Miss Sunshine and Definitely, Maybe but there are other sides to actors not everyone gets to see through typecasting. Through Adventureland, Jesse Einsenberg is becoming one of my "must see" regulars. And Zombieland is proving me right.
An all around awesome movie!

I love zombies. I love zombie comedy, but this film was as bland as hell. It was obviously made from people who only have seen one or two zombie films (probably just Shaun and 28 Days Later) and played zombie video games. It's humor was lame, and seemed like it was just plopped into the film, not intelligently integrated into the scenario like Shaun of the Dead. Woody Harralson is terrible. There is nothing worse than a comedic performance from someone who thinks he is funny. The zombies were just fluff, they didn't represent anything, they certainly didn't add anything, they were just there to be gory while cute humorous bits happened. Aspects of the comedy were straight out of Shaun, it's sad when the funniest bit is a glorified cameo that doesn't add anything other than the fact that he is there. with the characters. and there are zombies. This film flat out sucked.

Me and ilovemovies already made amends in another forum. This is old news.

And BTW, I gave Halloween a 7/10, NOT an 8/10. And, for me there is a pretty huge difference between a 7 and an 8 in the way I score movies. And BTW, for all the Schmoes claiming how awful the movie, the opinions were much more middle of the road (though definitely skewing negative) with the critics. Rotton Tomatoes score was low, but Metacritics actually gives an average critical score, and had the film near 50 (I think it's in the 40s now), so people here may be treating the movie a little TOO harshly.

This film is not at all supposed to be scary or creepy, it's almost as if the zombies are utilized as window dressing, but damn if it wasn't an exciting and entertaining horror comedy.

I never liked WH, i never saw his appeal, but he redeems himself with this film, it's one of those roles that an actor just dominates and makes you forget what he's previously done, yep he was born to play this role and you can't wait to see what he does or says next. The same can be said for Eis., he was perfect in this film. The polar opposites buddy film is a cliche but it doesn't matter, they played off of each other in amusing and hilarious ways.

What really got me, and this hit me after the first couple of scenes during the credit sequence, you get an undeniable sense of exuberance concerning the direction and the acting, you can't fake that. Gives the genre another much needed jolt.

I loved the epic scope they somehow managed to create on a relatively low budget, i did get the feeling they were in a post apocalyptic world, and the gore was highly effective as was the zombie makeup.

I hate to say something is the best but ZL just may be the most entertaining zomedy buddy/road movie since Sotd( yes, i understand Sotd was much more limited in scope than ZL). Two different movies, two different styles and sensibilities, so i'm not exactly comparing them, it has to be said, this is a great one.

Yet another film i give my highest recommendation. DD's seal of approval.

You should watch The Hunting Party. It's a very good movie where Eisenberg costars along with Richard Gere and Terrance Howard.

Anyone who hasn't seen that movie, I'd HIGHLY recommend it. It's terrific.

Still need to see Adventureland. Definitely very much looking forward to that one. Ditto for The Squid and the Whale.

Rodger Doger is great. so is Adventureland. Zombieland however is a bit boring where everything is window dressing to mediocre jokes instead of having intelligent jokes cater drama, horror and suspense, like the best kind of horror comedy (Shaun of the Dead for example)

The elements this movie did well, it did very well. The opening scenes were really funny, the direction is stylish and energetic, it was a lot of fun to watch most of the first half, and a few set pieces were a blast. I had a lot of problems though, namely with an often weak script that has a strong concept but is filled with atrocious lines. The voiceover wears out its welcome 30 minutes in and then screams at you "Here's some obvious exposition! I'm gonna tell you how to feel about this scene!" The soundtrack was pretty bland (great songs, but mostly poorly used), the pop culture referenced tired. I think Jesse Eisenberg, like Cera, has now worn out his welcome playing the same character the same way three films in a row. I didn't like him in this or Adventureland. Woody Harrelson was great, it looked like Breslin had a good time making it, and Stone was decent and looked pretty. Plausibility was definitely a factor for me, particularly towards the end and I thought it had a lot of missed opportunities for more action, gore, and humor. The drama falls pretty flat. The cameo is indeed funny, but more hyped up than it deserves. Overall, I'd call it a mild success. I have quite a few reservations but I'm glad I saw it.

My friends and I got dressed up for Halloween and saw this tonight. I was surprised by how busy the theater was - usually Halloween night is awful for business.

This movie was a blast. I think calling it America's version of Shaun of the Dead is a perfect description. The only real difference is that Zombieland never got super-serious and emotional like Shaun did.

I mean, it did a little bit when Woody was talking about his dead son, but it didn't dwell on it too much. It was nowhere near as gut-wrenching as when Shaun had to kill his mother.

I'm glad this movie didn't get too serious and kill off any of the heroes.

It was annoying how the girls got themselves into trouble at the park, but I think it fit with the story. They finally had a chance to have fun, so obviously their decision making ability fell in the gutter.

I do have to admit, the girls got a bit annoying, i felt myself wanting them to become zombie gruel.

The film was perfect with just the two main characters, the chicks slowed things down a bit.

There is a 40 minute sequence with almost zero zom action, that stretch tried my patience, although the interplay between Cera and Harrelson makes it bearable. I want to see a constant threat everywhere they go but i understand the budget is limited, it just couldn't happen, maybe in the sequel

I just realized that Woody Harrelson and Bill Murray were in Kingpin together. I'm wondering if that connection had anything to do with them re-teaming for this movie.
