I thought the trailer was pretty crappy, but this has been getting some pretty good reviews. I probably won't see it in theatres, but I'll see it eventually.

Another one I caught at TIFF this year. Nothing special, but a fun little movie. And the always great Daniel Stern doesn't disappoint as well.

I have low expectations for this because its directed by a woman that has starred in two Adam Sandler movies.

^^^ But two VERY good Adam Sandler flicks. I always thought Barrymore and Sandler are able to bring out the best in eachother. They had great chemistry in The Wedding Singer and especially in 50 First Dates, which Barrymore is especially wonderful in.
As for this, it looks like good fun. Fluff, but enjoyable fluff.

A rental at best judging by the trailer.
However, Ellen Page is adorable.

So I don't think you're a loser. : )

I actually saw it at the sneak preview last week (free WHIP IT t-shirts, YAY!!!) and I found it incredibly enjoyable. Ellen Page and Kristin Wiig, who finally has something to do in a movie, were fantastic. The plot or very by the numbers but it was really well written and Drew Barrymore seems to have found a new calling. There were some really beautiful moments in it as well.
8/10 (B+)
Saw this last week and it was a really enjoyable coupla hours... Ellen Page isn't as smart-assy as in Juno; her character is cute and sweet. Good support cast (Daniel Stern, Alia Shawkat, Kristen Wiig etc) -- all the roller derby chicks were pretty decent (though some parts were probably a bit forced with the whole "we're so bad ass! we chicks rock! look at me get bashed up!" etc etc) I really think Drew Barrymore did a good job for her directorial debut. It's a fun movie, kinda quirky, good soundtrack, some nice moments and (I think) believable characters. I'd definitely recommend it.

Whip It tanked. Wow?! Poor marketing maybe? (I never saw any TV commercials for it myself. Ads for Zombieland bashed the airwaves.
Even Ellen "Juno" Page couldn't draw the females in. Guess the girls wanted guns and zombies over roller-skates and hijinks this weekend...

It's a shame this film failed so miserably where so many other indie dramadies have triumphed, because at its best it's thoroughly charming and witty, and at its worst it's harmlessly entertaining.
Man, oh man, was that love interest the douchiest motherfucking scene kid I've ever seen on film.

Saw it tonight and I really enjoyed it! I will say upfront that the movie doesn't have any real shining light (other than Paige who seems to liven every movie up), but it totally entertained!
Props to Barrymore, I think she really brought it as a director.
