Directed by Mira Nair

Written by Ron Bass and Anna Hamilton Phelan

Genre: Drama

Plot Outline: After becoming the first woman to fly across the Atlantic, Amelia was thrust into a new role as America's sweetheart - the legendary "goddess of light," known for her bold, larger-than-life charisma. Yet, even with her global fame solidified, her belief in flirting with danger and standing up as her own, outspoken woman never changed. She was an inspiration to people everywhere, from First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt to the men closest to her heart: her husband, promoter and publishing magnate George P. Putnam, and her long time friend and lover, pilot Gene Vidal. In the summer of 1937, Amelia set off on her most daunting mission yet: a solo flight around the world that she and George both anxiously foresaw as destined, whatever the outcome, to become one of the most talked-about journeys in history.

Starring: Hilary Swank, Richard Gere, Ewan McGregor, Christopher Eccleston, Joe Anderson

Rated PG for some sensuality, language, thematic elements and smoking.

Runtime: 111 minutes

I forgot this was coming out. Looks kind of bland, but a bunch of it was shot near where I live so I'll probably check it out. Cast is pretty awesome as well.

It's been dismissed by some as mere oscar bait (a term I have grown to despise) but I think it looks excellent. Can't wait to see it myself.

Maybe they should start promoting this or something.

I've actually seen a few commercials here and there. Plus the actors have begun making the media runs lately (well, Hilary Swank has anyway).

But yeah, I suppose they could be doing a better job in marketing the movie.

So much for Oscar bait. 17% on RT. OUCH. Too bad. I kinda wanted to see it, simply because I like Hilary Swank.

Funny thing, I went to the page for my local listings, and I see the title Amelia on the list of things that opened yesterday and I was like what the hell is Amelia, so I open the link and say ooooohhhh yeah. Guess its a piece of shit though, which would explain why I haven't seen a single thing for it.

They must be treating it like a write-off. Movies like this need good reviews to succeed and they should've known better, paint-by-numbers biopics are so 2004.

I projected this last night. I glanced to see just one scene.

It was Ameilia and Richard Gere (her husband i guess) at a dinner table and this was the dialouge

Amelia: I -- I was thinkin

Gere: hmm mmm what about?

Amelia: Well, i want to go across the Atlantic.

Gere: You've done that.

Amelia: Yes. But not as a passanger. I want to fly it.

Gere: Good heavens the last fourteen people that tried vanished.

Amelia: (almost looking at the camera) Yes well dear, i'd rather vanish in a watery grave than live my life as a phoney...

Gere: Why? I've made a living out of it!

They both laugh, but then share an awkward silence directed at the camera, like they know the irony, and why shouldn't they? It might as well slapped the audience in the face

Looks like terrible oscar bait.

This just gets a big "Mehh", just no interest at all for me.

Good movie. It started out a bit shmaltzy and stiff, but by the end it was pretty thrilling and, of course, ultimately pretty sad.

Not the greatest thing in the world, but a well made biopic that does all it needs to do, and was less than two hours to boot.

7/10

I finally saw this film and have come away very disappointed.

4/10

Sadly, what may have been a remarkable woman has delivered a very unremarkable movie. The film shows nothing of her development and leaps right in to her public life. It also leaps clumsily in to the romance between Amelia and Putnam. It lays no basis for the story we are dragged through for two LOOOOONG hours. It’s slow, shallow and uninteresting. Two remarkable actors are wasted on this material until the very end of this bloated feature. Gere and Swank are amazing in the final radio communications scene between their characters. THAT was the movie I thought I was paying to see. You don't get a quality movie but you do get one quality scene. Unfortunately, ten great minutes doesn't negate the hour and a half of glancing at your watch.
