I thought he has great in Adaptation but I think American Beauty was his best performance. He's the ultimate army dad, and has some moving conflicts between the ideals imposed upon his character and opposed to the person his character really is. A real expertly performed showcase of nature vs. nurture.

He's at his best working for John Sayles. Matewan, Lone Star, Silver City and City of Hope.

He's also quietly brilliant playing Homer Hickham's father in October Sky.
