We are obviously talking about the ends of movies so reader beware . . .

After watching Law Abiding Citizen, I asked myself, why couldn't Butler's character have gotten away with everything? Why does the good side always win? It has become really predictable and I just want to celebrate the movies that went against the grain and have the villain or "bad guy" get away or win.

A couple I thought of right away were

THE USUAL SUSPECTS
SAW
SAW II

and if we are discussing the bad guy "winning" or getting what he wants,

SE7EN
V FOR VENDETTA - he is kinda the villain

Please post more becauase I would love to know some more.

Se7en and The Usual Suspects are great choices. But the movie that first came to my mind for this topic:

Arlington Road

A brilliant, punch in the gut ending!

I wouldn't call V a villain.

A movie that comes to mind the most is Watchmen.

All the ones mentioned already...The Usual Suspects, Saw, No Country For Old Men and Arlington Road. I'd like to add: Halloween and Hannibal!

Hellraiser
The cycle starts again and, well, you can't really defeat a demon hobo.

Phone Booth
Keifer just strides right by.

Basic Instinct
Though I can't stand Sharon Stone.

and not really "bad guys," but...

Bandits

and Sphere
That damn sphere is still out there somewhere!

I wouldn't include The Silence of the Lambs because:

I don't consider Hannibal Lecter to be the movie's villain. That would be Buffalo Bill, IMO. He's the movie's true villain.

And holy crap! How could I have forgotten about Fallen! That was such a shocking and awesome ending!

I would also add this movie:

Primal Fear

How?

I don't think having a swastika carved into your forehead constitutes "getting away with it."

I don't know if this warrants a spoiler tag given the very concept of this thread is inherently spoiler-rific.

The Usual Suspects
No Country for Old Men
Silence of the Lambs
Primal Fear - just devastating; "you don't get it, there never was an Aaron"

Well, he presumabley lives to see another day, albeit with an unfortunately placed scar. Fav villian of the year.

Well, he gets all the things he wanted and he never gets to pay for his acts. I mean, a scar is an extremely small price to pay for some of the stuff he'd done.
