View Full Version : I hate those movies...
Well, I know that once someone reads this they're going to hate me forever. But hear me out. I really love movies. But there are a certain type of "genre" (or however you spell that) movies that really make me want to go burn the TV. The movie that I am speaking of is the pathetic Simon Birch. I know that a crap load of people loved this movie beyond belief. I remember when I first saw it. I did not like how everything was just pieced together. I guess i must have seen it at a really bad time because I had just finished reading A PRAYER FOR OWEN MEANY by: John Irving. Now originally S.B. was supposed to be based on this book. But Irving hated the screenplay so much that he would not allow it. What a good idea. I mean if he let it pass, his name would have been shunned.
So to get back at my ranting, I don't like those types of movies. Simon Birch is a perfect example. Another would be My Girl 2. The first My Girl was stupid but not THAT stupid. I could at least stand watching the film. All in all, what I'm trying to say is that I hate those stupid movies that involves some unknown child actor, who cant act worth a damn, with a damn problem that they easily can get out of. But in order to fill up the rest of the 2 hrs. they decide to do the stupidest thing. And the thing that you can do to classify these types of movies by listening to the damn corny piano background music. It just ticks me off.

I have to agree that Simon Birch wasnt the best movie either. It wasnt too good. My Girl was good though. The second one was ok. But Simon Birch was definatly not the best thing I've ever seen.

I'm going to be the lone defender of Simon Birch. I loved it. Given, I haven't read the book upon which it was based, and I know that a lot of the folks that hated it were ones that adored the book.
I don't understand your genre classification. How could Birch easily overcome his problem? Seems that Sixth Sense could fit into the description you gave.

simon birch was good
Well, my classification of those kinds of movies is the movies that star unknown people and one well known person all mixed into one. The plot is so predictable it's not even funny. Take simon birch, it cast some bad actors and one good actor, Oliver Platt.
The genre of these movies is more clearly put as the movies with a really sh**ty script. They try to make it cute, funny, dramatic, and fun. They mostly only get the cute and dramatic and boring part of it. My Girl was alright. It was dramatic, sometimes fun, cute, and sometimes funny. It wasn't as boring as Simon Birch.

I have read A Prayer for Owen Meany and seen Simon Birch several times. My view? Owen Meany is leagues better, but translating the basic story into a family-friendly tear jerker was quite a task, and in the end Simon Birch is a good seperate work.
I did not find the acting in Simon Birch to be terrible. And, I even shed a tear or two! Overall, Simon Birch was a sweet, better-than-average family flick that was based on a spectacular, wonderful, amazing "adult" book.

I really like Simon Birch (8/10) and Mark Steven Johnson is the only reason I am looking forward to Daredevil (which has the potential to be the best comic-book movie ever), aside from the fact that it is a totally kick-ass comic.

I READ A PRAYER FOR OWEN MEANY IRONICALLY TWO WEEKS BEFORE I KNEW SIMON BIRCH WAS A MOVIE, LET ALONE A MOVIE BASED ON THE BOOK.
I DIDN'T ENJOY A PRAYER FOR OWEN MEANY VERY MUCH AT ALL: IF THERE WERE 250 PAGES RIPPED OUT OF THE MIDDLE OF THE BOOK, AND ONLY ABOUT 6 ELEMENTS OF FORESHADOWING VERSUS 600 MOMENTS IN WHICH THE END WAS BEING FORETOLD, I WOULD HAVE LIKED IT.
NEVER SAW THE MOVIE, BUT DID THE VOICE OF 'SIMON BIRCH' - OR OWEN MEANY, I'M ASSUMING - TRANSFER WELL FROM THE PAGES ON THE BOOK INTO THE CHARACTER'S VOICE IN THE MOVIE?

I actually enjoyed Simon Birch, but I think little Simon has quite a big mouth!

I really liked the first My Girl when I saw it in theaters, as a young'un. It made me cry my eyes out. The second one blew. And I have yet to see Simon Birch. It looked like manipulative sentimental drivel. Not that "My Girl" isn't.
