View Full Version : Enemy. . . too much sex! (6/10)

That's right, Enemy at the Gate had waaaay too much sex, yet strangely no nudity (barring a half-assed shot of Rachel Weitz). The sex and romantic plot managed to ruin this movie for me half way in. I was just disgusted. On one hand we had this engrossing tale of men killing each other, the other we have a hastily put together romantic theme which culminated in a 3 hour sex scene that left the audience feeling more uncomfortable than aroused. This scene coupled with the overused, "I won't die because I want to be with you" theme, gave the film too much of a saccarine taste. A film about *Stalingrad*. . . and they made it too saccarine. The mind boggles. Anyways, the battle scenes were good, the sniper battles were engaging, but the romantic backplot ultimately spoils the film.

6/10 is a bit harsh, because I thought this movie was done exceptionally. I didn't like the romantic plot either, and I agree with the fact that it did slightly ruin the movie for those hoping to see a war epic like Saving Private Ryan, but I still think it was a great movie.

Strange cause I was actually SCARED shitless that they'd "overdo" the romance angle, but didn't think that it took up that much time. And in respect to the particular scene that you mentioned, I thought it said a lot about the war and Jude Law's character in particular, in that even when he just wants to have sex, he had to be very covert and quiet about it (just like a sniper).
But I do agree with you that the film woulda been somewhat better without the whole "love" thang going on...oh well...maybe on the DVD cut... /ubb/smile.gif

i would have given the movie 7.5/10, good movie, good atmosphere but some stuff jsut didn't hit me as it should have, the opening battle see was good, showing how they were just thrown into the battle some not even having guns(obviously law was one of them. but i liked the battle scenes in saving private ryan ALOT better(esspeccially the opening scene). i jsut think the camera jumped around a little too much in enemy from everything that was happening. than it just cut out. the scene on the boat, with the planes was pretty kick ass though. i saw this movie with Witch Project, and he liked it a little more than me, but i do feel the whole love them wasn't sone very well. but i can't complain aobut seeing Rachel's ass but still. and it did make it uncomfortable to watch, i don't know why but you could feel the ension in the audience, everyone was jsut waiting for it to pass. but i'm not one to complain aobut sex.

Just saw Enemy at the Gates, I really dug it, I'd give it 8/10 like JoBlo and it made my top 100 list. I also think the sex scene was overdone and overlong, but I think the romance stuff was kept to a minnimum and I didn't mind it.

ENEMY AT THE GATES 8/10
The sex scene described as "uncomfortable" actualy made me laugh! i though it was quite funny! I'm not sick it just humoured me! It was the only sort of sexual relationship possible in that situation! It was over quite quick actually! The sniper action was amazing! Jude Law made a convincing leading man, Ed Harris a worthy adversary! Joseph Fiennes and Rachel Weisz were good characters! The fighting action was not as gory as anticipated (a minus point). I think the whole romance action was 2 intice women 2 cum and c it! its how i persuaded my girlfriend 2 cum with me!

I liked the romance angle. how else are you going to get women in this film? It was a decent little movie.
to me though and I just hate to agree with critic (joel segal) i hate that guy because he hates everything. Nothing is good to him. BUT he was right in bashing the director. He did a bad job. Well maybe not a bad job, but a weak one. The master of suspence Steven Speilberg could have made this film a "reel" winner and would have made this a masterpiece. This could have been a great great movie. But it fell short, but still watchable. Once again I liked the romance angle.
I thought that that sex scene fucked up the whole movie. I liked the movie (8/10), but it could've been so much better if the whole lovey duvvy horseshit was left out. I mean, the sex scene was so pointless and dumb, that I just wanted to yell out "what the fuck is this supposed to mean". But I didn't.
I was just waiting for one of the people next to them to wake up or swing thier arm on them. Damn, that scene was so horrible. The moovie could have been better if it wasn't for the cheesy, wanna-be-a-movie-that-proves-that-sex-sells sex scene, then the movie could have been better then 8/10.

I knew that there was gonna be some type of romance thing going on, so I was ready for alittle blink of an eye here, flip of hair there, but I really did'nt expect the sex scene. I guess I just was'nt ready for it and it seemed like it did'nt really advance the plot too much. Plus, if I got a chance to have sex with Rachel Weitz, I assure you I would'nt be trying to keep it a secret. Although, I sure would'nt mind women making that face that Rachel does while I'm having sex with them. Anyways, perhaps 6/10 was sort of harsh because the movie did have a great feeling to it, but that sex scence, and later the romance stuff, really put a burr in my britches. If only Hollywood would listen to me and do an epic war movie about two hot lesbian soldiers. Then they could feel free to put in the 10 minute sex scene and sappy romancantic plot.

I think most of us were just hoping that it wouldn't happen. At least it was realistic. They wouldn't have stripped down and gottin it on while lying in the line of sleeping snipers. I just wished they would have just left it as an unspoken love. The relationship served as a love triangle that was probably historically accurate and need to be there. But, at the risk of sounding prudish, we really didn't need to see that man. A sex scene doesn't need to be in a movie that is great because of it's realistic value. I think realistic sex should not be on the screen at all. Sex in films should be over the top "sport-F&*$ing."

I dug the flick bunches, but I didn't like the romance thing much, like most people here also think. The sex scene was a little...odd, to say the least (I thought they looked like two fish who don't have any water in their tank). I think that the assumption that women will only see a war movie if it has romance in it is a little harsh; I went because Jude Law's a damn sexy man. Screw the lovey mushy stuff.

Hmmmm i didn't think there was too much sex in this movie... I thought some parts are quite uninteresting, but maybe it's just not my type of movie. JUDE LAW is excellent though... Some parts of the movie are kinda predictable and there just aren't enough exciting moments to keep me interested... 2/4

LOL, all you sexaphobic weirdos! I loved the entire movie and yes, I'll have to agree that the sex scene was not the most common type of it, not to mention all the weird guys just laying around while Rachel and Jude groan along....
Man, I'd hate to be one of those extra's... EWW!!!!
ANYWAY, I agree that the movie could have gone on without that scene and I doubt that they're relationship would have been as good as it was afterwards. But I enjoyed it all very much. 8.5/10.

Like i've said in the review section:
Umm, where was the character development? When Vassili saves glasses-man, they have no idea who they are to one another. But in the next scene, they're playing together as if they were gay. Holding each other's head to their faces and stuff. These characters are incredibly unbelievable and I did not feel for any one of them except for Rachel Weisz, because she's hot.

I think that Russian's are just like that so I think that the actors were just getting into the part. As you could also tell in the movie, everyone kisses things a lot. The woman kissed the letter to her *SPOILER* (whispers) dead son *SPOILER END* she kissed it. Tanya kissed that kid, Vasily kissed Tanya, among other things he did to her...
Anyway, I think that the charactors were just like that. Although I admit that soldier's were rarely that affectionate with each other. But it all worked out and I still think that it was a really good movie.

The sex scene aside, it was an okay movie. The opening scenes work well, but the final act is unnecessarily protracted, and I got tired of it. Worth a rental, but not full price. 6/10.
Russian men aren't as homophobic as American men. They will touch each other more and even kiss hello. You see it all the time at the Olympics. I've even seen pics of Jude Law kissing his friend Jonny Lee Miller hello. I even saw a pic of Ewan McGregor and Elton John kissing hello /ubb/biggrin.gif It's not a big deal to the more European artsy types. Europeans tend to maintain less personal space around themselves than we Americans. It's not right or wrong. It's a cultural thing, not indicative of sexual preference.
BTW, what's with all these men complaining about the sex scene? I never thought I'd see the day when guys would complain about seeing a pretty girl's behind. /ubb/biggrin.gif It's the ending I found contrived, not the sex itself. There she was amidst the wounded without a scratch or scar on her pretty little face. Even Vasilly had a scar on his forehead.

I would have given it an 8/10.

while searching for the word sex in the search, i found this...
I agree with the fact that there is always a overdrawn romantic angle in war films... Every GI and soldier has to get some, though i don't think it was as bad with enemy at the gates as it is with other films, and i don't think it brought the film down too much.
