Why was Cable Guy received so badly? i have a generally good taste in movies and i love this film. what did all u think of it? was it a critic thing or a general public view over there in the U.S.?
i laugh everytime i see this flick, and i think the message it tries to convey is extreemly powerful.
i hate to say this but was it because Americans in general didn't get it, or felt insulted by it?

Most of the people who did not like "The Cable Guy" were giant fans of "The Mask" & "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective"...those people do not like to see a depressed and suicidal Jim Carrey...I don't think it was the film itself, just public opinion by a mainstream audience that wants cheery films...
While not a masterpiece, "The Cable Guy" was an interesting film...I love all the movie references, especially the one from "Midnight Express"...when Carrey shows his nipple to Broderick in jail...funny stuff...

I doubt moviegoers were expecting a dark comedy when they walked into THE CABLE GUY.

I think it's the Jerry Lewis thing, Lewis can be very disturbing in the right part, ditto Carrey. Brock and Raena you guys were spot on in your own ways. Poeple expect a fun Carrey, not a dark depressed one. I personnaly really liked this movie even though I was told by the critics and some fans not to. It was an original and surprisingly refreshing film.

I think it was probably the script. It nearly ruined Jim Carrey's carrer!

Many people goes to the movies to see the actors perform, to laugh out loud, to cry with romantisism, see good special FX, any many other stuff. The problem here is that not too much people goes and really watch the movie, they don't look for the message, many of them don't even understand the purpouse of the movie and they go out saying "what a good film!". That's so wrong.
I understand your point about Cable Guy and beleive in the message it shows, but many ones assure: "Jim Carey, oh I wanna laugh! This is gonna be the comedy of the season!" They don't look back to writers, directors and staff. They're so wrong.
I hate does people who feel critics and don't even know the director of the movie they're talking about.

I think the problem was expectations - people go in for a laugh-your-head-off and get something much darker. I thought it was pretty cool - but gutless, trying to please everyone. I say, chuck in a sex scene, kill him off gruesomely and call it a thriller!
(it would make a kick-ass Single White Female type film.)
