Hey people, I don't know if you've heard this news or not yet, but I can't tell you how much of a SIGH of RELIEF I did when I heard this GREAT news the other day.
The "NBK" lawsuit against Oliver Stone and Time Warner was dismissed the other day. I mean this is GREAT news for our U.S. Constitution and for those of us that strongly believe in artistic expression and anti censorship.
<a href="http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/nm/20010313/re/film_stone_dc_1.html"> Here's the link. </a>
I don't mean to ramble on here, but they had absolutely no evidence against Stone. I mean this 17 year old girl, who claimed she commmitted the crime because of watching the movie, did this crime _3 days after_ she claimed she watched the movie, & she did it _only_ at the urging of her boyfriend. & Oliver Stone gave his deposition last summer, and they still couldn't find any evidence.
But here's what I don't get. the girl was *17* freakin' years old. when you're at that age, you are an *adult*, and should know how to be responsible for your actions and know the difference between right and wrong with your brains tied behind your back. there's no ifs, ands, or buts.
but that's besides the point. the point is that people who commit these crimes either come from very bad parents who just didn't give a crap about teaching them right from wrong, or are just plain sick in the head.
But anyways, I can't tell you how RELIEVED I was hearing this news. and another thing, if out U.S. Constitution gets violated, then there will be another civil war.

Right with you all the way COACHP, it was a ridiculous premise for a court case to begin with. The film was rated (R) anyway, what more can the film maker do, censorship is as much the parents job as it is the film censorship boards.
Millions of people saw this film & appreciated it's message & style. When some neglected & undereducated teen has no solid role models & latches on to a piece of celluloid clearly defined as unsuitable. How does this translate into being the filmmakers fault?
Maybe intelligence tests should be given before cerain artistic visions are screened, just to check the audience members can handle it. This would have been a good idea with Fight Club as well. (A no inbred/redneck policy on films like this may well work wonders?)
Now, I know it's crazy talk but sooner or later one of these ignorant dimwits will ruin it for all of us! Thank god the wolf has been kept away from the door a little longer.
Artistic Vision & Freedom of Speech have triumphed over Censorship & Film Burning. Great topic COACHP.

Thank You, guys. because I am so sick especially of politicians in Washington like Joe Lieberman, &, to some extent, the news media of blaming movies, video games, and music for our society's ills.
and you know what I REALLY don't get ? recently, there was a 14 year old kid convicted of murdering a kid, & he claimed that he learned all the wrestliing moves he did on the kid by watching alot of WWF. now here's the thing. while politicians in Washington will blame movies, etc., they DON'T say a _peep_ about professional wrestling.
I mean, really. if you think about it, professional wrestling, the WWF, & other more wrestling stough that you see on pay per view worse then that are much more violent then movies like "NBK" and "Fight Club".
& freakin' Joe Lieberman & other politicians like Sam Brownback, John McCain, Herb Koel(sp) don't bother bother to say _anything_ about the WWF?!?
I wonder if Vince McMahon(sp) kisses alot of @$$e$ in Washington.
Hey look, I think people are just as stupid too if they think professional wrestling is real, and go out an copy what they do, but I'm just very surprised that while they lash out at the entertainment industry, they don't even look at something else that's
much worse.

Those people in Washington are a bunch of morons. Every single person on this board is their moral and intellectual superior.

Cyclonus, just compare the 80's, and even early 90's to the late 90's.
I can tell you that when I was in junior high/high school in the 80's/early 90's, that I don't think ANY of my classmates were the least bit violent. and guess what, they probably watched more R rated movies then I did, & they were pretty much more 'wimps' the I was.
and if you compare the movies in the 80's, and even 70's, with the movies in the 90's, I can tell you that they were _more_ violent then they they are now.
I mean there were FIVE Halloween movies, NINE
Jason movies, FIVE Freddy Krueger movies. and wasn't Jamie Lee Curtis the equavalent to what Neve Campbell was the last few years ? the 'scream' queen(meaning she was on a number of horror movies). & Curtis was in alot more horror movies then Campbell. I mean don't you remember that Curtis movie 'Prom Night', where some guy's head gets chopped off bloodily ? or how about those early Chuck Norris movies where there was almost nothing but senseless violence ? heck, the violence in his tv show 'Walker, Texas Ranger' is _nothing_ compared to his early movies. &, oh yeah, didn't Arnold & Sly also make a number of violent action movies in the 80's as well ?
but en yet, I don't ever remember hearing of things like school shootings, teen violence, etc. during those days. heck, when I was in school then, the only bad thing kids would do is smoke, or even a few got themselves into drugs(both of which has happened for probably decades). and heck, was gun control even an issue back then ? no, of course not. & as a matter of fact, I didn't even know the what the term 'gun control' meant during those days. so it was pretty much easier to get access to a weapon back then then it is now.
So what I'm trying to say is that it seems like in the 80's/early 90's, parenting was alot more responsible then it is now, it seems. I remember watching 60 Minutes II like last year or so, and the FBI/secret service were doing research on why these kids are violent, and even went around to schools across the country to talk to teachers, etc.,
on the warning signs of kids who could go over the edge. and they said that in each of these school shootings, the kids involved _didn't_ have a model parent in their lives.
like, for example, the teen who did the school shooting in Pearl, Mississippi a few years ago. when he was in a room at the police station, he started crying how nobody would listen to him, & all he wanted to do was talk to somebody, etc. it sounded to me that he had parents that didn't give a crap about him.
but anyways, sorry if this rant is pretty long, because it's just so sad that what's something that's _not even_ 1% of the problem, those idiots in Washington just overblow it to proportions. I find it very hard to believe that they don't even think about looking into other things as to why they things happen.

Coach: In other words, you're with me on this!
Also, have you noticed how fast these legislators jumped on the anti-violence bandwagon? Right after those school shootings?
It's painfully obvious they were just using the situation as an opportunity to promote thier agenda. Bastards.

What I don't understand is why the media only reports negative impacts from movies. Why is it that we never hear about people doing good because they saw it in a movie? If people really did commit murder, because they saw it in a movie, wouldn't it go the other way as well? Isn't the media sort of pushing this dismal state onto us?
THE NEWS has a bigger impact on us than any movie, since THE NEWS reflects the world we live in. And, belive you me, the death toll between 6 and 7 is much higher than in NBK. What kind of example are we setting for our kids? If you ask me, I think it's time the media took some responsibility for themselves and toned down themselves.
Mt theory is that these school shootings may have something to do with kids wanted to be famous, Jerry Springer-style.
