Princess Mononoke is the adult, violence-soaked fantasy cartoon by the great scripter/director Miyazaki. I have read a few reviews and it sounds like an amazing film. It's also the most popular film ever in Japan, even Titanic didn't have a change against it.
So my question is: Has it arrived to western countries yet? I read a highly positive review of the dubbed version in Variety last winter, but the film still hasn't been released as far as I know. Or maybe it bombed so badly, that I didn't notice it.
I just think the film had makings of a big hit and it was voiced by some big stars.
So does anyone know when the film is coming?

The dubbed version was in limited release back a few monthes ago. You had to catch it at your local art house. It is supposedly releasing on DVD (and rental) Aug. 8th. However, some sites list it coming out next January.
Mononoke made a little under $3M at the box office, but it only opened on 8 screens. (It grossed 18 Billion Yen in Japan) I was lucky enough to see it at the Inwood in Dallas. I prefer Miyazaki's "Nausica" in the way of entertainment, but Mononoke is probablly more artistic. Nausica should be coming out in an English dubbed version in the next few years, as Mirimax has a distribution deal with Studio Ghibli (Miyazaki's studio).
I'm sure you wanted to know all that.
FYI - Miyazaki movies that are currently available - Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service

Thanks csmoose! I wonder whether it will ever come to theaters here in Finland, but at least I can get it on DVD.
Can't wait to see Mononoke and Nausica. I have seen only two films from Miyazaki; Porco Rosso was good and I totally loved Totoro.

Princess Mononoke was one of the best new films of '99(eventhough it was already 3 years old). It was a beautiful film by Miyazaki and won many awards in Japan. I wasn't aware that it was in a limited release because it was playing a number of theaters in New York, even the big ones which play the blockbuster hits. But the reason why Mononoke didn't do well was because it didn't have much promotion. There were no commercials running regularly on the popular stations. I have only seen one Mononoke commercial on the International channel.....c'mon! That's like channel 93. Who watches that?!! (besides me.)
