If you're like me and REALLY enjoyed Fincher's fucked up ride through a seriously deranged "game" that the main character's (Michael Douglas) brother (Sean Penn) gave him as a birthday gift (some would say that it was a suicide intervention, but to each his own), then you might just be interested in this...

Someone sent this to me:

THE (REAL-LIFE) GAME
I found something that seems to be very interesting. I read in Rolling Stone magazine about something called Majestic - it's an interactive game that claims to "infiltrate" life and "is not a game you play, it plays you." Sounds pretty cool.

They creator cites David Fincher's movie THE GAME as being the inspiration to create this game, this is why I thought you might want to
check it out. I signed up for it today, and nothing has happened so far, but it told me it would contact me when I least expect it (through phone, email, and fax. They offer a free demo on their site: http://www.majesticthegame.com

Enjoy...I think... /ubb/biggrin.gif

I signed my ass up in a second. If the demo goes well, I'll have to look into the full version. The concept is really cool. I'm paranoid just thinking about it...

Hey, has anyone's game started yet? Just wondering if they've contacted anyone.

Does anyone know if this is still around? It sounds interesting. And the above link seems wrong.

One of my friends use to play this game in its hey day, which was brief. I don't know if the game still runs though. He was getting calls on the telephone from mysterious people talking to him about covert ops they need him to do or some shit. He was getting emails and they monitored everything that he did. Straight up weird, but exciting.

Yeah damn, I don't see it anywhere on the page...it sounds like a lot of fun, yet a little scary at the same time. :)

I read about this about 2 years ago in a video game magazine I tried to sign on. I don't know if it ever caught on or if it worked or not.

Nope, it was a flop. It didn't do very well, being an interactive game that plays you.

I played this back in the day. It only lasted a couple months before it tanked. The problem was that it wasn't as cool as they made it sound --- the "telephone calls" were prerecorded messages with bad acting and no interactivity -- and once you'd figured out its limits, the illusion that you were participating in a "mystery" was dead.

Example-- at one point, I had figured out some element of the plot a little before the game designers thought I would. So one of the characters is talking to me on AIM, telling me I should be looking for this guy (conversations with "chatbots" representing game characters was a common occurance). I try to tell the character I already know who it is, but the game isn't having any of it, cause they didn't consider anyone would figure this out early. Finally I am screaming 'IT'S JENKINS YOU FUCKING IDIOT!!! THE INFORMANT IS JENKINS!!!" And the AI is saying "Now, I'm going to be upset if you don't stop fooling around and start looking for that informant!" And at that moment I was pretty much done with the game.

Lots of potential, poorly realized. And yes, Fincher's "The Game" rocks.

Speaking of 'The Game' ****Big Spoilers******

Wouldnt you have been super fuckin pissed if these people fucked with you so badly that you eventually tried to kill yourself?

I dont really think that I would have been in the right state of mind to attend my Bday party afterwards.

Great movie though, one of my favorites.

Didn't think I needed to explain it, but here ya go:

http://dir.salon.com/tech/feature/2001/09/17/kooks/index.html

"But even though the conspiracy theorists are still in the minority -- heavily outweighed by the Net's very real levity -- the bizarre theories hit perhaps too close to home for some. The popular computer game Majestic, which peppers players with phone calls and e-mails as part of an interactive mystery, was abruptly cancelled on Tuesday. The game, eerily enough, includes references to CIA conspiracies regarding terrorism and oil in the Middle East.

"Given the recent national tragedy, we feel that some of the fictional elements in the game may not be appropriate at this time," said an e-mail sent to the game's participants. Considering the paranoia of so many anti-government citizens of the Net's online communities, it was probably a wise decision not to add fuel to the fire: The conspiracy theorists are having a field day already."

Search on Majestic and 9/11 on google, see what more you can find.
