I love Cast away and love the under rated ending. But I don't understand why these wings on the package helped him survive. HELP!
Neither do I really, but I do think the ending was a bit corny. I guess Chuck believed that an angel (hence the wings) wathced over him while he was stuck on this island. Maybe he thinks that the woman who made the wings can offer him a new future, and possibly new love ...
Ok, this is my personal opinion.
I just want to say first that I do like Cast Away (most of the people I know doesn't), for a simple reason. Anyone who has been involved in an accident 1.000 miles away from the women you love, knows (as well as I do) that the hope can do miracles.
About the package this was what it represent: HOPE.
If the main character opened the last package (and note clearly that was the only one that he doesn't open) and doesn't find anything useful, he would lost the hope of getting out of the island (on his first week there!!!!). In my opinion the package represent his last hope of getting out.

Hope sounds reasonable to me. I think it motivated him to stay alive, he took that much pride in his job! To save those extra packages and eventually giving them back to the recipient, sounds believeable in a way. Hell, I haven't seen this film in a while so I honestly forget.
