If you mean "Effects Houses" i should think the leading ones are WETA Workshops in New Zealand (Currently working on The Lord of the Rings trilogy), and George Lucas' very own special effects company - Industrial Light and Magic (Most commonly referred to as ILM).

In terms of solely computer animated film making, PIXAR are pretty much at the fore-front.
