View Full Version : If The Matrix 2 and SW Episode II opened the same day, which would do better?

Star Wars definately has a bigger following, but the Matrix also has begun a huge following, and more people liked it than Episode I. Although the Matrix 2 will probably be rated R and SWII will probably be PG, that gives SW another advantage, although I can only wonder how well SWEII would do if it were R, that would spark a huge interest in it probably. Star Wars would probably win, but it would be great to see the Matrix do better, and chances are that people will like the Matrix better unless they REALLY screw it up.

If Jada Pinkett Smith is in the Matrix sequel, I will go to SWII first., otherwise I'd flip a coin.

STARWARS
it's soo entrenced in american culture that
almost no one can avoid it...I mean, do you
know anyone who hasn't seen PHANTOM MENACE??
I'll probably see MATRIX2 after the hype over
STARWARs2 is over.

I'll definitely be seeing Star Wars: Episode II over The Matrix 2. I mean, c'mon, it's Ewan McGregor against Keanu Reeves. As if they were opening the same day, I tend to think Episode II would also do better. I mean, Star Wars has a much higher following than Matrix. I tend to think SW2 would make around $20M the first day, while Matrix would make around $8M.
Oh yes, and don't be surprised if people call Matrix 2 a "disappointment," no matter how good it really is. You see, Matrix 2 has this little thing Matrix didn't have and it almost killed The Phantom Menace, and that's hype.

The Matrix 2. I like the SW trilogy, but I didn't care for TPM.

This is a pretty hard question. I my self like SW Episode 1 but the problem is not many other people did, being a disadvantage. Or would people see it just to see if it really is better? The Matrix was cool, but not everyone's choice, should it looks like SW would have the upper hand
PS. I forgot what I was going to say here!

Matrix 2, no question asked!

Matrix 2. SW II is going to be good, but no where as cool as the Matrix 2. I personally hate the Star Wars hype and the movies themselves. I would be shocked and at a loss of words if SW II was more popular after that Episode I mess. I am going to be looking foward to the Matrix 2 and I will go and see SW II. I just don't think it will be as great as everyone hopes it is.

At the box-office i predict SW2 will fare better if only for the fact that it has a greater following and cuz frankly it cant be worse than TPM.
I personnaly will go and see SW2 for the simple fact that i am a huge SW fan. Has been a part of my entire life...the countless hours i spent playing with my toys are unbelievable. Once SW2 is over i will go see Matrix2
Im enticipating both these movies and both of em will do a killing at the box-office.

Star Wars Episode 2!
Firstly, BIGGER FAN BASE! Children and adults both would line up to see it.
Secondly, NATALIE PORTMAN. No comment.
Thirdly, WHO CARES ABOUT MATRIX 2! The best part of The Matrix was the fact that it was original! It hadn't been done before! Now their taking it away and it'll get boring. It's going to be like TV Executives trying to revive a show, and they'll just bring in more characters and have stupid plots.
Trust me,

For everyone to hate Episode I, it easily made $400 million in the box office, and became the 2nd highest grossing film ever...

Star Wars 2 without a doubt.
It has a broader fanbase, and it has generated strong buzz with the emmy award winning Jonathan Hales working as a co-writer. Hales' interview with the French insider in which he discussed strengthening the relationship between the SW characters (character development!) and how much fun he'd had writing witty banter between Obi-Wan and the young adult Anakin heartened a great many SW fans.
Plus, as the above poster stated--Ewan McGregor versus Keanu Reeves? Absolutely no contest. Now that McGregor actually has something to do in Ep 2 besides standing behind Liam Neeson, his onscreen personality is going to show its charisma potential. Not everyone could star as young Obi-Wan Kenobi and then play the lead in a musical (Moulin Rouge, due June 1, 2001--he sings opposite Nicole Kidman). Full 14 page spread in Vogue on Kidman and McGregor. Very nice.
The Matrix was eye catching, but the story was pretty unoriginal. I laughed when its producers kept harping at the academy awards how their effects were in support of a story. The chosen one? Where have I heard that concept before? /ubb/wink.gif Plus, Matrix 1 stood alone. IMHO, it didn't cry out for a sequel and I don't feel that Mr. Reeves is strong enough as an actor to carry a trilogy.
Add the reduced screen time of Jar-Jar Binks, increased screen time of Sam Jackson, and the pretty Miss Portman and you've got a box office winner. Matrix 2 will be okay, but I wouldn't count on Mrs. Pinkett Smith to draw them in.

Star Wars cannot be looked upon in the same light as the Matrix. The Matrix was a very inteersting and good movie, but Star Wars is very much more than that, it is a worldwide institution.
We live in an age without the great Roman and Greek mythology of the past, where the influence of fairy tales and storytelling has become almost redundant. like it or loathe it, Star Wars is the great modern myth, detailing the bizarre and twisted life of one family in a galaxy far, far away. The matrix, for all its qualities, has a long way before it achieves the importance of Star Wars.
I know the commercialisation has taken over, and I don't like it either, but that is hardly the fault of Lucasfilm, but the fault of the WTO. We should be grateful that something as wonderful as Star Wars has been created at all.

In regards to the previous post, I wasn't comparing the two, it's just that the Matrix 2 is probably the most anticipated sequel next to star wars. I guarantee SW2 would do better, because even though the last may have pissed off a lot of big fans, they will still see it anyway. The only people who wouldnt see it after SW1 are probably senior sitizens who didn't like it. And of course, all the kiddies are going to see it no matter what anyway. But I would definately see both of them the same weekend, I'd probably see SW2 first though simply because it's a better movie crowd. Sometimes a crowd can make a movie seem better too.

Sorry Flaparoo my man. I can see now what you were getting at. it is certainly true to say that many of the fans were disappointed with the Phantom Menace(although I wasn't), and i would suggest that although they still have faith in Lucasfilm, SW2 is make or break time for Lucas.
It has to be mindblowing, nothing less will do.

make or break??..I don't think so.
Fans of STARWARS are soo damm loyal and
as I said before..the 'saga' is soo entrenced
in american pop culture that it succeeds
whether people like it or not. Let's not
forget that the primary purpose of the
films is entertainment, first and foremost.
Also, STARWARS is critic proof..nuff said

personally, the matrix would get my vote no doubt about it, because i love the matrix much more than any of the 4 star wars movies so far...but star wars has a cult following which would beat matrix 2 to the box office any day /ubb/frown.gif

No question, Matrix 2 would be first for me and my friends . . . But I would definitely get to Episode 2 within a couple of days. Has anyone read the plot summary of episode 2 that was leaked yesterday?? I can't decide if I want to read it, but I printed it out.
this is the silliest question in the world ever. for some reason, generally, people are looking forward to episode 2 of starwars more than the first episode. i think that starwars can't get much worse than that first awful instalment (which, as a matter of fact, wasn't all that bad, but no speck on the other films), its impossible. the matrix has has a small cult following , but nothing to match starwars, so i definately know that starwars would win.
Matrix was a brilliant film, but was spectacularly hollow in content, i just hope that the second is better. plus, i'm getting tired of all this "trilogy" shit.

Had there been four MATRIX movies out already, starting back in 1977, I think then, this question would be a huge debate. Because that is not the case, in my eyes, it is clear that STAR WARS Episode II would kick all kinds of @$$ over THE MATRIX 2, even if THE MATRIX 2 turned out to be the better of the two flicks.
That being said, I would go see THE MATRIX 2 first, if both flicks came out on the same day.

Its a sad fact of today that Starwars II would probably get a big opening also SW would be U and Matrix 15 so thats another reason they would get a higher number of people
..yes, but "v" you could say that about any film ever made " if this was 15 and that was u..." its a load of crap. anyway, in cinema there is a higher proportion of older audience than there is younger. older audiences have the intelligence to see whatever film they want, wheras children really do not. as with episode one, everyone went to see it from both age groups.
