Every time that I see posts here, magazines, and tv and radio shows talks about box office performance I want to do bodily harm to someone. I'm sorry but who cares? Are you going to see a movie based on how it is projected to do at the box office or how it is actually doing at the box office? To me it seems completely meaningless to even talk about it. All that this kind of talk does is inspire filmmakers to continue pump out movies that the masses are going to want to see and not just good films.
What is the point of talking about the potential opening grosses of Harry Potter, Spider Man, Attack of the CLones, LOTR etc...

Well, sometimes it's a movie that we WANT to see doing good because we love it and believe that the effort put into it should make it recover it's costs. ie: The Others.

The worst is when people use the box office take as an excuse to not see a movie. A few weeks ago, i suggested a movie to one of my friends, and was like, "No, that bombed at the box-office." So????
The box office intake has nothing to do with the quality of a movie. Fight Club, anyone?

Well, I usually skip over the box office topics myself, mainly because a)I'm always wrong, and b)I don't really care. True, I want certain movies to be successful, but I think success can be measured in more ways than 10 million dollar increments. Most of my favorite movies either bombed or did modestly anyway (Fight Club, Memento, Final Fantasy, Dark City, etc.)

Excellent topic. I agree with you schmoes 100% Some of my faves also bombed at the box office; Usual Suspects, Go, Resevoir Dogs...was Resevoir Dogs ever on the big screen?
Years ago movies were based on Art. Today they they are geared toward profits and appeasing the mass herds (mooo!! moooo!!) called mainstream America. Just like MSNBC rattles off earnings from IBM, Intel and Cisco, there is some cheesy, over-make-upped, breast implant, peroxide haired bimbo rattling off the latest box office numbers. Again were talking big business. We're talking about projections, analaysis and profits taken. I find it sooo Ironic and Fitting that Fight Club would bomb at the box office.

I am also surprised that Fight Club bombed, considering the trailer made it out to be your run of the mill action flick. Basically, ever since Jaws came out and started the summer blockbuster season, studios have made mindless popcorn entertainment their first priority. Occasionally, you get a few good ones (Star Wars, Indiana Jones) but most of them are just clunkers.
I like to see which movie is Number 1 and which movie bombed. Also, if I really like a movie and I want it to do well, I usually check up on the Box Office Top 10.
