View Full Version : Discussion: Is "Memento" Academy Awards Material?
Explanation:
In my opinion Memento is a great movie. It got all the ingredients that I like in a movie.
My doubt is, if the movie will be take it into consideration (aka winning) academy awards. The Academy is very tradicional, and revolutionary movies (like Pulp Fiction or Taxi Driver) not always get the recongnition they deserve.
My early prediction: The movie will appear in the nominations but will not win much (causing the anger of many of us).

I think it will get some nods through nominations, but not win too much. There are a lot of contenders this year.
Remember that getting nominated is as much an award as winning. The only thing that winning gets you is a mention in the trivia pages.

I'm sure it will get a screenplay nod!
I have to agree with you cyclonus!! I think where it has the best chance of getting a nomination and winning is on best screenplay!

I don't think it will get to many nods, I don't think it really deserves them all that much. I was disappointed in this film in terms of what I heard anyway. But it still gets a 7/10 from me. I do think that a nomination for Guy Pearce would be nice, he did a fantastic job as the clueless "protagonist".

I think it will get (now don't get so surprised) the best director award as well as the best screenplay award ONLY if it gets more hype from now till the awards come around. Think about it, everyone expected Ridley Scott get the director award when, thankfully, Soderbourgh got it. And alos, you have to remember how few "Oscar-worthy" movies came out in 2001. I doubt A.I. will get many if any at all because so many critics and fans hated it. So, overall, i hope and predict that it will win or at least be nominated for the major awards.

Few movies are as deserving of recongnition as MEMENTO, and few are less likely to get it. Hey, if those shills in the academy passed over FIGHT CLUB, I wouldn't put anything past them.
I agree with Cyclonius on the category of screenwritting.
Otherwise, winning an Oscar not only have influence in trivia games. Also give a second push in the box office and in the video and DVD sales.
The money (oh!, damm concept) that the movie mades in all its forms (not only in the theaters) will define in some part the chances of getting bug money for the projects, specially for the director.

It might not be in nomination for anything else than original screenplay and it will probably win.
I didn' texpect Ridley Scott to win the Oscars so I doN,t think Chris nolan will take it home this year.
