I just finished watching Donnie Darko (which I downloaded on my computer), and it was amazing. It is one of my favorite films of the year so far, and I cannot wait until this film comes out on DVD. This is Richard Kelly's first film, and I am eagerly anticipating his next. This guys got talent, and lots of it! The cast of Donnie Darko is great. Jake Gyllenhaal (yes, Bubble Boy) stars as Donnie Darko, and does a great job. Jena Malone is also great, as Gretchen Ross, Donnie's love interest. Drew Barrymore is Ms. Karen Pomeroy and she also does a fine job. Donnie Darko is an original film, that everyone should see. It's a shame it had such a limited release, but if you ever have the chance to see it, see it. You won't regret it.

I was looking forward to seeing this in theaters, but after a month of waiting, I've given up on a potential release. I guess I'll just have to wait for the DVD. Austin usually gets most of the limited releases, but Donie Darko just slipped under the radar. Life goes on...

Yeah, the Arrow and I have also been waiting like bastards for this bitch to come our way over the past couple of months but sadly...it never did. Sounds like it's gonna be a good one. Hopefully, I'll get a screener or something and we can review it for the site...I dig original flicks...

I believe it was released in New York and LA, maybe a few other cities. But it is definitley not getting a wide release.

That sucks. I'd love to check it out on the big screen. How come most of the great movies never get wide releases.

Because most of the great movies don't do great at the box-office. Simple as that.

So that only us movie fanatics can enjoy them the way they were intended.
I'm pretty mad this isn't going to get a wide release, it was high on my most anticipated list, but, what are we going to do, what a shame. I smell the label "cult classic" being attached to this film at this very second. And if I'm not mistaken, it has one of the best posters out of all the movie's released this year! Heck yeah, I'm buying it!

yeah I had completely forgotten about that movie, after a month or so it just slipped out of my mind. Thanks to this message it's back in there, now I'm back to 'dying to see it' It really would be great if these smaller independent like flicks would be released everywhere. I wouldn't expect theaters to keep them playing for very long, but they could at least bring it in a couple of weeks.

There should be a movie theatre that plays only rare films. It could play Donnie Darko, Session 9, and a whole shit load of independent flicks that only major movie fans have heard of. But that would never happen http://www.joblo.com/ubb/frown.gif
this is one of my favorite movies ever!!!! it is already a cult classic and we need to start talking about it!!!! this movie should've been nominate at the oscars but i'm glad it wasn't such a super boxoffice hit 'cause maybe i wouldn't have liked it so danm much(but i doubt it). Does anyone know how much this movie has made on video/dvd sales and rentals? i'm dying to know. This is a movie that like Go(my othe fav. movie ;) ), made lots of buzz on video, has the best quotes ever, and is definitely cult material.

Wow, Ed, you really bumped this thread up. It goes from December 14th, 2001, to May 31st, 2003. Is that a record?

I think I'm one of the few that doesn't think Donnie Darko is the greatest thing since slice bread. Some good visuals and direction, sweet music and an original story... but it just doesn't do much for me. Never cared for any of the characters, even Donnie, and in some spots it bored me to no end.

I didn't think it was that great either. I really enjoyed it the first time, but to me at least, the movie has no lasting appeal at all. It's a one-time-only movie for me, because on multiple viewings, it's pretty bad, in my opinion.
What's all this nonsense about "the greatest thing since sliced bread"? Who said that? And if someone did, we got the Pyramids, the Great Wall of China, electricity, films, TV, radio, planes, trains, automobiles, roller coasters, and so much stuff, and yet the best invention ever is sliced bread?? It's just sliced bread! I never understood that saying...

We've got a great little theater here...
Princess Cinema (http://princess.sentex.net/)
I used to go all the time... when I could afford it. Sucks being broke.
They used to do Hong Kong Saturday Nights a while back... kicked ass!! (and yes, they've played Donnie Darko there, so it's relevant... shit Session 9 too!)

I wouldnt say the movie was incredible. Sure Jake was excellent as Donnie and Kelly directs brilliantly but I wasn't blown away like I thought I would be, I'll watch it again and form a better opinion.

I thought it was a great flick.
Dark, twisted, werid, my kind of movie. Jake was great in his role and I think he will have a great future ahead of him.
This was one of the films that the general public should've wacthed. I doubt it would get great reviews, but still.
Anyway, a great movie overall.

i actually watched this about an hour ago, and i didnt dig it as much as i thought i might. i felt it got a little tedious in places. what really saved it was the cool-as-fuck performances from pretty much all of the main cast. i loved the acting, but found the film overall to be a bit of a drag in place. still has its moments i guess, and its taught me a new word-fuckass. its not bad, but then i don't think its good as some folks on here. id certainly not say it was incredible, but neither was it bad either.
6/10 seems fair. mostly because i am a fuck ass.

After hearing about how...well, incredible...it was from many many people, I was a bit worried that I'd find Donnie Darko disappointing. Luckily, I really really enjoyed it, and I enjoyed it more the more I thought about it. I know it's been said before, but I'll say it again: the Gyllenhaal's are extremely talented people. I'm not sure which is better, really, Jake or Maggie, but this movie was certainly Jake's moment to shine and he was fantastic. I loved the direction the movie took at the end, but I can't really talk about it without spoiling so...I won't. Oh, and I'm very grateful to this movie for showing me that version of "Mad World". Great song!
8/10

me 2! i really think i actually love this movie hehehe
i hear pple saying that it looses appeal on repeated viewings but that definitely didn't happen to me. the first time i saw it i though it was just good, then i saw it again and i was blown away. it has so many details and many people say so many things that are just so true and keep you thinking(just like fight club).
oh and check out this interesting fact:
the movie is on 1988
the sum of the numbers of the 'end of the world' date equals 88
Delorian's speed cause donnie loves the movie (88mph)
it's #88 in the imdb.com!!

I watched 'Donnie Darko' last night with a friend who really hated it and I really liked it, he said he couldn't understand it, I agree it was a thinking movie which I liked, he wanted the plot spelled out, it create a lot of discussion which I also was the aim of the the director.
On reading the three pages of this thread it seems to be a movie that people like or don't with only a few in between.
