I had certain expectations for that film - Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon...but all i found was totally boring performance. Besides, all those pseudo-oriental details (setting, clothes, etc) My mother is specialising on China (language, history, modern life) - all she said about what she saw was - bffffffffffff
So do i - no Oriental Spirit - this is pure Hollywood (in bad sense)

The only thing I know Bfff. to stand for is Best Friends Forever and Forever and Forever.
I thought this film was utterly superb, I was not expecting to see a film of this quality when I entered the cinema, but it just happened to blow me away. One of my top five films of all time.
Also, I don't know why people couldn't swallow the strings work - I've seen harder things to swallow in cinema.
10/10
The language was Mandarin, not Chinese, btw.

This movie was excellent.
Your mother can't be doing a very good job in specialising on china considering she didn't even recognise the difference between the chinese language and mandarin!!!
How odd...
The whole strings work was a representation in my eyes of the elegance of the martial art that they were studying. You see the "masters" of the martial art were superb and were able to glide amongst rooftops whereas the police of that village merely remained on ground, a contrast to show the power the martial arts has over the basic fighting methods of the police.
Its not there to be spoon fed to you like in the matrix "the matrix..you can bend the rules...you can fly"...no the audience that watch this and like it are intelligent and are able to work these things out for themselves.
Not "pure Hollywood in the least sense, but it was westernised...and there's nothing wrong with that.

I'd like you to explain to me what it is you thought was "Hollywood" about it?
It was in an entirely different language - That's not "Hollywood" to me.
No big stars. Chow Yung Fat isn't really big if you think about it, and Michelle Yeoh was only in one Bond film.
The action, well, wasn't typical action - It was a poetic action. Is it really hard to believe the flying? It's their "force", just like the "force" to the Jedi.
It contains some extra-ordinary martial arts. By far the best i've ever seen.
Do you really see any explosions? Soppy dialogue? Over-use of CGI? Infact, CGI was only used in about four sequences.
If there's anything "Hollywood" about this film, it's, um.....can't think.
And did I mention the score? Golly, it was superb.

Count me as part of the "love" group. CTHD was a cold glass of water splashed into the face of cookie-cutter Hollywood action flicks.

this movie pure hollywood? NOOOOO!!!! This ISN't a Hollywood movie, If "Hollywood" were to make a kung fu movie, it would look like 10x worse then those cheap Lo Wei movies. This movie is from Taiwan. The people loved it (well, not really. They've seen enough "Kung Fu" movies aswell) and was allowed to have a North American release. Plus since the movie takes place in the Mainland, they speak Mandarin, not "Chinese". Unless they threw in some cantonese into the movie http://www.joblo.com/ubb/smile.gif.
Chow Yun-Fat is HUGE, maybe not much but by god he makes this movie work. I haven't seen Michelle Yeoh's work (except for Tomorrow Never Dies and Heroic Trio I think...)But she is a goddess. I liked Zhang Zi-Yi aswell, even tho she isn't a martial artist. She did pretty good (I've seen some worse kung fu then that) I heard the role was gunna go to Shu Qi. But she passed on it....why Shu Qi!?!? I love you! :-p
But you gotta give Yuen Woo-Ping some credit, watching him bust his ass to make the fighting work. Can somebody else do it better? Like any Hollywood choreographer can top Yuen Woo-Ping's work....
Ok, I'm rambling and not getting anywhere. Oh well. Me stop now http://www.joblo.com/ubb/smile.gif

No big stars! Whoa there AK.
Fat is huge in the east as well as Yeah, plus wasn't she in all those Jackie Chan movies.
Just because they are not popular in the US does not mean they are not big ass stars in their own countries.
And yes this was not a Hollywood type movie, but I can see the copies coming from Hollywood soon. Hey this movie was made with a Chinese consultant, yeah it's just as good as one made by someone who grew up with the myths of his homeland, yeah!
And I too would like to know what BFFFF means.
Out.........
When I said they were not big, it was in reply to the film being too Hollywood, so I was simply saying they were not big in Hollywood. I'm sure they're big stars in the East.
Sorry if that wasn't clear enough.

I thought it was pretty damn overrated too. An average kung-fu flick, at best. A few nice visuals, but for the life of me I can't see what the big deal was.

yea, Wong Fei-Hung can easily destroy Li Mu Bai with one swift kick to the face http://www.joblo.com/ubb/biggrin.gif (even tho Li Mu Bai isn't real) but if Wong Fei-Hung was in this film...man.....he'd make Wu-Xia and Medicine rolled up into one perfectly, plus can use that "Green Destiny" with his Lion's Dance..
