Many seem to give Spielberg the lion's share of the credit for the 3 Indy films, despite the fact that Lucas created the character.

Rightly so, in a way. After all, from what I've read, Spielberg gave Indy many of his personality traits. Also, since Spielberg directed all 3 films, he was more hands-on with the character than Lucas. In addition, it was Spielberg's idea to have Sean Connery play Indy's old man, & we all know how the world embraced that teaming.

To summarize, Lucas created Indiana Jones, but Spielberg(& Harrison Ford) made him take flight.

Spielberg should definitely get more credit for Indiana Jones. I dispute how much of Indy Lucas actually created, because I too have heard that it was mostly Spielberg who developed the character. Not to mention he actually made the movies, and they were good.

I agree with both of you. We owe them both, but Spielberg is the man to really thank.

I think we owe the three of them -- Spielberg, Lucas, and Ford, too. I read Harrison Ford was the one who came up with Indy's sense of humor and he gave a hand with a big part of the wardrobe. Lucas came up with the story and with the fedora and the bullwhip. But like you I think too that Spielberg is really the man to thank. He his the one who really developed Indy, who made the movies after all, and who gave them that old serial look they had.

So I think Spielberg is the one we owe much, but without the contributions of each one of the trio, Indy wouldn't be who he is.

Well, I think Speilberg, Lucas, & Ford should all be thanked for their outstanding work. But in the end, I think Speilberg deserves the most credit.

Lucas might have come up with the idea, but Spielberg directed it and put his stamp on the material.

a good film can not be made by only one person. But Spielberg thought of most of it, i would say he carried the 3 amazing films.

Say what you will, but I don't think Indy would've ever happened without Speilberg. If someone else had been given the opportunity to direct TEMPLE OF DOOM or LAST CRUSADE, they might have screwed the whole idea royally. George Lucas wasn't going to throw this character at just anybody, and Ford being both their ally in the form of an actor was available and perfect for the role, as time and space thankfully did allow. Hope Indy 4 can surpass the expectations of Phantom Menace.

If we give Lucas the credit for Indianas Jones, we have to give Ian Flemming credit for James Bond and I think in both cases the actor(s) is the one who should get it.

I really don't like george lucas very much, but i love spielberg.
So i say spielberg should get more credit.

Yeah, besides, I liked EPISODE ONE but I fear EPISODE 2 might not be all that good...whereas having Spielberg on board makes me confident about the quality of INDY 4.

Well, the natural thing is to give Spielberg all the credit, but just like a computer (or many other things) - It can't work without all its other parts.
Lucas came up with the idea, I give him a lot of credit. Spielberg did a good job of directing, I give him some credit, but often his directing felt lacklustre, so i'm divided on my opinion here.

I'm just curious about one thing...if you liked Episode One, what makes you think that you aren't going to like Episode Two?

I think you should probably reply in the OFFICIAL Countdown to AOTC thread in Upcoming Movies, as it is a different topic than THIS thread.

Well Colin it's kinda complicated...let's just say I liked EPISODE ONE, but thought it wasn't as good as the original movies though. So if EPISODE TWO will be in turn a little less good, it could become seriously bad. And add to that the words "N'Sync" and you got reasons enough to ask yourself questions. http://www.joblo.com/ubb/wink.gif
I mean, Lucas always said that he didn't want known actors because they would take away of the characters believability. And now he got a boys band somewhere in the background. Yeah right. If he can't respect one of his fave principles, he could very well serve us some crap. http://www.joblo.com/ubb/biggrin.gif That said, I'm still really looking forward to EPISODE TWO...just have my doubts.

That said, back to Indy!
