I want to ask all of you (who are interested of course) this question:
Was it good that Denzel got thisyear for hie preformance in Training Day? Was his preformace really the best?
I dont think so coz Russel Crowe and Sean Penn were better IMO coz their roles were much mroe demanding.
What do you think honestly?
I want to see how many of you actually thought that Denzel deserved it (DO NOT think of his previous failed awards i.e. Malcolm X and Hurricane just think of Training Day)

The simple fact that A BEAUTIFUL MIND won the awards it did (Best Picture, Director, Adapted Screenplay and Supporting Actress), minus the win for the soul of the film (Russell Crowe for Best Actor) is a heavy indication that Washington’s award had nothing to do with his performance.

Just tell me yes or no and why.

My answer would be both. It's good because Denzel Washington is one of the best actors working today, if not the best. He deserves the honor and the award was a long time coming. But it's bad simply because he doesn't actually deserve the award. Russell Crowe deserved it more, and I can think of a few other actors that gave a better performance than his in Training Day.
He doesn't actually deserve it, but since the Best Actor Oscar stopped going to the actual best actor of the year very long ago, I don't mind that Denzel got it.

I think Denzel deserved it. For starters, he carried the movie - he didn't have a director, producers, script, supporting cast (Ethan Hawke was good, but not Oscar worthy), or anything else to fall back on like ABM.
Plus I couldn't tell if this guy was good or bad through the first half of the movie.
This is the first time he's played this kind of character (a villain for those who can't read between the lines).
Lastly, he's been passed over so many times, it's about damned time.
You mentioned Sean Penn - there was no way he was going to win. The mentally handicapped thing has been done.
Could someone pass along to JoBlo that it's the Singing Bush and not the Burning Bush in the Three Amigos. The Burning Bush is this whole other thing.

the thing about the oscars is that its a competition. you can have 5 equally good but completely different characters nominated but only one can win. does this really mean that one was better than the others? not necessarily.
and once again you have to remember that its all voted on by over 5000 members and its not like a panel of 5 people saying "we like that guy. give it to him!"

We've already all agreed that the members of the acedemy vote in who they want to win for whatever reasons they see fit.
Not that it doesn't suck, but as a member you have the freedom (But also the responsibility in my mind to do the right thing-something most of them don't get, I'm sure) of choice. If you want to vote for someone because their old, haven't gotten the recongnition over the course of their career, their an underdog, they are a woman, they're African American, or disabled; you have that right.
It just sucks; that's all. It is enevitable that in award ceremonies people will get passed up; it's going to happen. But this whole 'raincheck' attitude that the acedemy seems to be guilty of as of late is bullshit. You didn't win. Get over it. Come back and kick ass next year and shoot for it agian.
As for Denzel, I think he and Crowe gave eerily close performances. IMO, either of them could have won and I wouldn't have been surprised. I just hope that the members of the acedemy voted for Denzel for his performance and not to reward him for being passed up for the Hurricane or Malcolm X, and sure as hell not for being African American. Neither of those has anything to do with his performance this year.
