tonight, i was watching akira, and i suddenly thought "is that movie famous in us as it is in france?".... and another question came to me: has a japanese movie like mononoke hime or akira ever been nominated for an oscar in the category of animated movie? or in the category of (don't know the exact term sorry) other country movie? so american peolpe are mangaphile (mangalovers) or not?
just wondering.....

Based on my knowledge in motion pictures, I believe that not one Japanese animated film has been ever nominated for an Academy Award.
Mononoke Hime (Princess Mononoke) should have been nominated for an Academy Award. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences should recognize these films because a number of these films are much better than their live-action counterparts (for example, "Metropolis" or "Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade.")

so japanese animated movies are not recognized by the academy, but are they recognized by the audience? are they shown in theaters or only on dvd and video tape?
you don't like live action movies? can i ask? they are not my favorite neither.....

Japanese animation (or indeed any kind of adult animation) is not popular overall here in the states. No non-American animated films get major releases in theaters, with rare exceptions every few years (such as Akira's intial release). There is, however, a large "underground" following of anime here. My college campus has an anime club. http://www.joblo.com/ubb/smile.gif But the average adult, if they've seen any Japanese animation at all, think it's weird and isn't interested.
P.S. Akira is in my Top 5 favorite sci-fi films of all time.

i thought that, with all comics there are in the us, american people would be interested in manga, especially since the asian touch is in vogue in movies.... have you read the akira books? i love them.... even more than the movie, but i still prefer the poetry of heroic_fantastic japanese animated movies, even if some reallistic ones are poetic too, like (don't know the american name sorry) "le tombeau des lucioles".....
