Shakespear in Love beat Saving Pvt. Ryan for best picture?! I couldn't beileve how that movie beat Saving Pvt. Ryan. I mean Ryan is going down in history as one of the best war movies ever. Anyone else agree???

Magnolia, Magnolia, and uh... Magnolia!

SOOOO much better than the HIGHLY overrated American Beauty. Shit it wasn't even NOMINATED for best pic. Holy shit :-(

Nope, after seeing them both I could see why Shakespeare in Love beat out Saving Private Ryan... For me it had to do with the storyline itself... Shakespeare in Love was a better movie throughout.

I found Shakespeare in Love to be pretty lame. I loved Saving Private Ryan except for two plot points that stick out as so grievously stupid and ridiculous that it sort of ruins the movie for me.

Overall, Ryan is by far better.

two people in love does not overcome the most gritty, realistic war movie depicting the fight for fate of the world (otherwise known as WW2). i did like Shakespear in Love, but its just comes in no way close to Saving Private Ryan, i cry about that oscar pic every time i hear about the acadamy awards...

Jasonite

Shakespeare in Love was almost totally unbelievable throughout, not to mention never getting its tone right...half the time it was trying to be a drama, the other half attempting to be a comedy. Possibly the worst movie released in '98, and it beat out the best.

One could argue that those 'two people in love' included the greatest writer the world has ever known. Of course it was fictional but so was SPR eh. I feel neither should have won personally, esp. SPR. God I hate that picture. It started this whole new phase of war-is-glorious propaganda we're inundated with now

Saving Private Ryan and Shakespeare In Love are both very good, but for me the best movie of that year was The Truman Show and it wasn't even nominated for Best Picture!!

I agree that Goodfellas got screwed, and so did Jerry Maguire/Fargo ( how could the english patient win 9 oscars???????) and Citizen Kane... but that's another story cos it isn't any good is it moviedude? :-)

Saving Private Ryan not winning is, in my opinion, one of the screw-jobs in the history of the Oscars.

I think Shawshank not winning is one, too.

<<Of course it was fictional but so was SPR eh>>

Actually, Saving Private Ryan was based on a true story, so it's closer in reality than Shakespeare in Love.

My two cents...plus a penny tip! ; )

I actually didn't care that SAVING PRIVATE RYAN lost to SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE... I hate war movies, they're so played out. So unoriginal nowadays.

I was glad that A BEAUTIFUL MIND won. And OMG, I can't believe that someone said they wanted MAGNOLIA (ugh!) to win over AMERICAN BEAUTY. Magnolia was too long and too boring.

REQUIEM FOR A DREAM is overrated by many. It relies too much on that "gee-whiz" factor because of all the images. It's good enough to watch once, but I wouldn't want to watch it again.

Hmm...sorry you feel that way about Saving Private Ryan, because even from just a cinematographic point of view it was almost entire original in its presentation--now all the war movies are imitating it.

I liked magnolia, but I agree with you that it wasn't nearly as perfect as American Beauty was. I agree with you about Requiem for a Dream too, though I probably think less of it than you do. This is a movie filled with scumbag characters that I couldn't bring myself to care about...none of them had any redeeming qualities except for the mother, and even her plight got unbelievable as the end of the movie neared. Yeah some of the cinematography was ok, but some of it was just WAY overdone...a split-screen of two people lying in bed facing each other? WHY? Because the director's trying to be artistic, and failing utterly.

I think Royal Tenenbaums got totally screwed at this year's Academy Awards. If Gwyneth Paltrow actually deserved an Oscar, it would be for this film. She should have won best supporting actress instead Jennifer Connelly. In the past, I think that either the Green Mile or The Sixth Sense should have won best picture, best actor, best supporting actor, and best supporting actress in 1999. I didn't really like Shakespeare in Love, but I thought that it was better than that boring crapfest called Saving Private Ryan. As for 1995, call me crazy, but I think that Seven should have taken home the best picture award instead of Braveheart (which I also thought was boring). I know that films like Seven don't usually win, but if Silence of the Lambs could win 1991, then there is no reason that Seven didn't deserve a chance.

I disagree with those who say that Lord of the Rings should've won. I wanted Moulin Rouge to win (which was pretty much not possible), but I didn't mind A Beautiful Mind winning.

I did like Lord of the Rings: FOTR a lot, but like Joblo, I only enjoyed it to a point...it certainly wasn't one of the movies I enjoyed massively from 2001. (Though believe me, I wanted to absolutely love it...after seeing it climb to #1 on the IMDb temporarily, I was more than certain it would be my fav film of the year ---it didn't live up to my expectations)

And on the other end of the spectrum, I didn't expect to enjoy A Beautiful Mind, but I did --a lot.

Oh, and movies that got screwed over this year:

Memento should've been nominated for:
Best Picture
Best Director -Chris Nolan
Best Actor -Guy Pearce
Best Supporting Actress -Carrie-Ann Moss

should've won for:
Best Original Screenplay -Gosford Park was ok in terms of screenplay, but this was far more revolutionary (and yes, for all GP fans, I have seen it)
Best Film Editing -Either this or MR should've gotten it

The Others should've been nominated for:
Best Picture
Best Actress -Nicole Kidman
Best Supporting Actress -Fionnula Flanagan
Best Original Score -Alejandro Amenabar
Best Director -Alejandro Amenabar
Best Cinematography

and one more:

It doesn't matter. LOTR is far better than some overrated, melodramatic piece of shit about a man with problems who overcome obsticales in his life and bla bla bla we've all seen this shit a thousand times, which is why I enjoyed LOTR far more than ABM.

LOTR didn't meet my expectations, but its for sure the best damn movie of the year and at LEAST goes in the top 20 list of films for the decade. By saying you only LOTR was only a "good" film instead of a great cinematic achievment is pretty much saying it sucks.

What happened to Final Fantasy even being nominated for CGI film? I mean, Jimmy Neutron was even nominated. I wonder if Sqare refused to take part in the Oscars...otherwise, I don't see why it wasn't nominated...Granted I liked Shrek and MI more but FF wasn't even there.

Also, this movie may have had bad acting but I think it should have gotten an award. MORTAL KOMBAT!!! One of the best action films EVER!!!.

That's a good point, Final Fantasy should've been nominated in the Best Animated Film category. And for special effects it has the best CGI of any film ever released, and I don't think it was even nominated.

And BitchTits, thanks for the laugh; I can't help but wonder if you'll ever actually learn how to spell Odyssey, but I suppose the journey is half the fun.

Too me LOTR:FOTR was nothing but a childish fantasy and I was more then happy to see it lose BP to the more deserving A Beautiful Mind... Now, before everyone jumps on my back let me explain my reasoning behind LOTR... It was a good movie and had lots of entertainment value, but despite the dark side of the film, I just couldn't get past the fact that it had wizards, hobbits, and elves... I know it's a pretty stupid reason to find a film childish, but I can't get it out of my head. Throughout the film I just sat there and thought to myself how unbelievable this film is. I guess I just don't have much of an imagination (which is really what you need in order to find LOTR to be a masterpiece).

Anyway, I would like to throw my vote to both It's A Wonderful, and The Insider, and to a lesser extent Ed Wood as films that I feel have been screwed out of a Best Picture win. And instead of Saving Private Ryan AND Shakespeare In Love, I think Gods and Monsters should have won in '98.

Your arrogance reminds me of the critic for People Magazine. In her LOTR review, she explained that the movie was very good, it had character development, it was dark, and it had lots of entertainment value. But, at the last minute she throws in that its a "fantasy" movie and therefore she's too "mature" to enjoy it, much like you.

Who gives a fuck about epic, exciting adventures? Let's all watch another run-of-the-mill "hip" and "cool" movie like Fast and the Furious. Besides, hot cars and cool chicks in a movie beat out any other good movie any day.

American Beauty winning best picture. If you take away the drugs, swearing and budding teenage serial killer, you have a tele movie.

Highly over-rated.

Naaaah!!!

SAVING PRIVATE RYAN isn't THAT great!!! I've seen it a couple of times since watching it on the big screen (where I got really, really sick within the first 15 minutes - I still don't know if it was due to the D-Day action or weepy old James Ryan) and liked it less and less. Some great acting (Tom Hanks ruled here!!!) and magnificently realistic portrayal of war, but still bad story, slight characters, overlong and unnecessary framework.

I haven't seen SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE since 1998, so I still remember it as a great comedy, but Best Picture?!?

However there are SOOOOOOOO many really great movies that got screwed at the Oscars:

MEMENTO
PULP FICTION
SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION
L.A. CONFIDENTIAL
BOOGIE NIGHTS
