View Full Version : Spider-Man ending...DISCUSS!

Weapon X

Given the topic, it wouldn't make much sense if I didn't put up a gigantic SPOILER WARNING!!!! right off the bat.

Now then...

First off, I LOVED Spider-Man. The acting, the directing, the story, all top-notch.

And then comes the ending...Mary Jane tells Peter the words he's been wanting to hear from her from the moment he first saw her..."I love you." He's finally gotten the girl, but what does he do? He says, "I will always be your friend." because "That's all I have to give."

Now then, the reasoning behind this is very clear; no matter how hard he tries, all the people is Peter's life whom he loves most suffers for his mistakes. First his Uncle Ben, then Aunt May, and even Norman Osborn. And his best friend Harry walks away with a death wish for Spider-Man, and, ironically, an even closer bond to Peter Parker.

Parker adores Mary Jane, and would like nothing better than to profess his feelings, but after her near death at the hands of the Green Goblin, he comes to the inevitable conclusion; the closer he gets to her, the more danger he puts her in.

This life lesson is clear enough...but still, all through the movie, you're rooting for him to hook up with MJ, and when he finally has the opportunity to make it happen, he turns her away! Like I said in my previous review, PARKER YOU EVIL, STUPID BASTARD!!! I HATE YOU! HAAAATE YOOOOU!!! The one redeeming factor is after he walks away, and she suddenly is struck by inspiration. Or, as my viewing companion put it, "Hey, I recognize that tongue!"

It's just one of those things where you didn't want it to happen, but in the end, you realize it had to. And besides, it gives Parker an layer that makes him even more human; it gives us something to dislike about him.

Then it ends with that great final voiceover: "Wherever life takes me, I will never forget these words: With great power comes great responsibility. This is my gift. This is my curse. Who am I?....I'm Spider-Man."

The ending to this movie touched me, surprised me, and in a way even horrified me.

Your thoughts, y'all? http://www.joblo.com/ubb/smile.gif

Great topic Weapon X and i totally agree. Because of what Parker is he really can't get close to anyone as far as saftey issues on the basica level. I was really touched by that ending and I love that final voice over parker does.

"I am Spiderman!!!!!!!"

Hers a good question. Remeber when Peter was walking away and MJ looks back at him with that odd face. Did she finally figure out he was Spiderman?

I think she knew it was Spider-man because, when they were hanging from the bridge, he called he M.J. instead of Mary Jane. She refered to that at the end.

The ending was great. A Fincher-styled ending. Surprising and not Hollywood Cliche.

And guys, how cool is it to hear a girl get told, "Let's just be friends."

PS -- This topic is in the wrong forum, but I don't think it should be closed just because there is another SM topic going on.

I haven't had anything to say about SM, but I had something to say about the ENDING! That is why I'm posting here and not there.

So do you guys think Kirsten Dunst knows for sure that he's Spider-Man and that she'll know it in the sequel, or do you think she'll just suspect?

She knows. Dunst actually spoiled that fact during her Letterman interview.

She totally knows that he's Spiderman. Who else thought that William Dafoe was perfect for The Greeen Goblin? He was so fucking awsome. http://www.joblo.com/ubb/biggrin.gif. At the end when Harry says something like "I'll never let Spider-Man live for this," it set up two things. One: The deffinate seqeul which Toby Maquire signed for, and Two: Harry will be the next villan.

Every time I see a picture of Spider-Man I want to go see it again. I loved it!!!! http://www.joblo.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Yeah,i know i deffinently want to see it again, and yes i also belive she knows, i belive she recognized it by the kiss and also the conversation the did have at the end. When the end did come i was bangin my fist and waving my hand in the air, saying "noooo", don't do this to me, and now i wait for the sequal.

Weapon X, I dont think that there is anything that we could add to your interpretation of the ending. Its pretty much complete.

The final voiceover of the film was a great way to end the movie; however, I think that the events that led up to that were pretty subpar. To me, it seemed pretty cliched. We had the stereotypical nerdy guy (Parker) and the stereotypical hottie (MJ). Because of the situation, they were able to inevitably fall in love. That plot device, to me, seemed really weak. The minor twist in their relationship gave the illusion of a non-Hollywood ending. However, the fact is that it was still really really cliched. That was the only thing that bugged the hell out of me as I left the theater.

Regardless of that, I think that this was a really good movie that was really true to its source. Acting and Special Effects were really good despite my horrible first impression (based on the trailers). I cant wait till I see this movie again. It was definitely one that was fun to watch.

The last battle was incredible. The ending was good, but the last battle reminded me a lot of the last fight scenes in Batman between him and The Joker's henchmen.

For example:Both heroes are bleeding from the mouth, they get beat up a whole lot, their both fighting in dark condemed areas, and both scenes envolve the villans trying to trick the heroes into letting them get off the hook.Anyone else agree?

I actually think Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst and Willem Dafoe were all perfectly cast. Each of them did a superb job.

I am sure Harry will be a villian in the future, but I hope he's not the next villian. I'm hoping Spidey 2 will have Venom or somebody in it, but also have Harry becoming evil and plotting against Spider-Man. Then in Spider 3, he becomes the new Green Goblin and is the main villain.

But that's just me. I'm dying to see Venom on the big screen!

Venom would be cool but they can't have him so soon without having Doc ,the Lizard,Mysterio etc..

I think she's seriously considering it for a moment. But aren't there moments that we all do that and then go... Nah, couldn't be and go on with our lives? That's my guess here. But yes, part of her certainly is thinking "could it be?"

When she started professing her love at the end I was suddenly thinking they were about to ruin the ending. But when Peter said the "friends" bit and then they played his voice speaking again at the end as it had at the beginning I was really happy. I felt like things were done really well and really - right.

It's no fun anyway if he gets the girl that fast http://www.joblo.com/ubb/wink.gif

i think the ending really showed what a conflicted character peter parker is. which makes him seem more likable to me because in the end it's tragic he has to use his powers to help people but sacrifices any type of normal life for the sake of others which makes him a true hero, which make him more appealing to me personally.

IMO he already got the girl. For some reason that was enough to tarnish the ending for me. Sure, the twist was okay, but it just seemed overly cliched.

I dont read the comic books, but is the son of the Green Goblin an actual character and if so, what is his name? Not Harry, im talking about his villan name.

I figured everybody would know who Spiderman really is. Why don't the other characters recognize him by his voice?

Well, i loved the movie, and I liked the decision he made with her at the end, the thing that I didn't like was how it was all told! What could've been a simple dialogue became a bunch of cliches that made me believe I was in Titanic all over again! I mean "you made me believe I could be more than I ever though I could" Jeesh! what is that? http://www.joblo.com/ubb/smile.gif

If people can't figure out Clark Kent is Superman with glasses, they will never figure out a guy in a costume

Peter Parker didn't want to put MJ in danger, so they would be just friends. Don't you think if someone wanted to hurt spiderman and knew his identity they would attack his friends too. He should of just took the girl and hell if being friends will put her in danger, why not get something more out of it along the way?

That is what my friend, Thomas, pointed out to me, but i loved the ending as it was.

I'd love to to, but unfortunately I was reading the preview page for Spider-Man at the Coming Attractions site, and apparently New Line owns the Venom rights (or so it says)

So until the rights expire (who knows when), no Venom in Spider-Man movies http://www.joblo.com/ubb/frown.gif

The only regret I had from watching Spider-Man was that we will have to wait a whole two years before the sequel!!

I think this is the plan.
Spiderman had Green Goblin
Spiderman Returns? will have Black Cat, and at the end it will introduce Dr. Octopus.
Spiderman Forever? will have Dr. Octopus and the second green goblin.
Spiderman and MJ? will have (a corrected mistake that batman screwed up on) that will have Venom.
Then Spiderman Beyond: Year Five: will have another character that I don't know about
If it makes it- Spiderman 6: Bloodlust - will have Spiderman and Daredevil on a team or something like that.

Thats the plan that may just run up.

SPIDERMAN RETURNS WILL BE RELEASED MAY 7, 2004. WITH THE OPENING AMOUNT OF A LOT OF $$.

As much as I hate to admit that tub of lard is right, Harry "The Hutt" Knowles himself has brought up another valid point about the ending, along with full-frontal pissing on Roger Ebert's obnoxiously off-base review of the movie:

originally posted by Harry Knowles:
Roger Ebert... Ok, why doesn't Peter Parker just drop Mary Jane on the Cemetery grounds and fuck her? Why can he not be her boyfriend? NO, it isn't that he's impotent, Mr Sensitivity. But I'd be wagering a guess, that Harry Osborn, whose father Parker had just killed and whose funeral they were all at btw, had just told him he was the only family he had left, and the idea of hooking up with Harry's girlfriend (ex or otherwise) at his Father's funeral would be... Inappropriate. OH... And then there is the knowledge that every superhero has, that anyone close to them, will be used against them, so you can't allow anyone close, because you would be putting them in danger.

Never thought I'd say this, but thank you, Harry.

Just thought I'd clear something up - Harry doesn't become the Green Goblin, he becomes Hob Goblin, who wears yellow and blue. Basically the same attitude and attacks as the Green Goblin though.

Okay, Spiderman is my absoulute favorite, and I've read every book of his since about issue 50. Without boring you with lot of history, Harry Osbourne finds out his dad was the Green Goblin and goes insane, he takes up the mantle of the Green Goblin to get his revenge on Spiderman. Hobgoblin is not Harry, but is an actual mutant al la X-men that came to be during the "Inferno" fiasco that Marvel comics suffered in the 80's. Harry is killed as the Green Goblin, and lo and behold, Norman Osbourne returns and basically ruins Peters life!

Keep in mind, it would be MJ and Peter Parker, the friends, not MJ and Spiderman.
Think back to the movie. Goblin ONLY chose to kill MJ because he found out that peter was Spiderman. The whole point is that no one is supposed to know that peter is Spidey which makes peter and MJ friends work out.

According to a recent interview with Kirsten Dunst, the Spider-Man villians in the next movie will be Dr. Octopus and a "lizard-man thing".
