View Full Version : My First Mister (Leelee Sobieski, Albert Brooks)
I knew that this movie opened this last weekend, I knew who was in it, and I knew what the plot was. I figured I might check it out on video. Well, this morning while I was watching TV I got to see some clips from it and hear more about it and now I really want to see it. This role is something different for Leelee Sobieski, she looks really freaky, I've never seen her play a gothic looking chick before. She looks pretty cool though. By the way, are you guys aware that this is her third movie to come out this year. Man is she busy, she must have been busy promoting her movies non stop lately. Anyway, I think the movie sounds and looks pretty good. It's too bad it's only in limited release, it will probably stay in limited release too. I guess I'll just have to wait until video.
Anyway, has anyone here seen it?
Does anyone here want to see it?

I kinda want to see it, but probably will wait til video. Ebert and Roeper gave it 2 thumbs up, and most critics think the first 2/3 is excellent but the last bit is crap and predictable... Looks like a very interesting film though.

Is it me but is Albert Brooks in more films about death than any other actor? When will someone put on a film festival using the older and younger fall in love theme?
This badly titled film is worth seeing. Christine Lahti directs an over-used theme and pulls it off. She has Albert B, playing this older guy who frames his anger in haggard honesty and has no time for shit and LeeLee S is reacting to what she feels is the fraudulence around her and is silently begging for honesty without compromise.
I am relieved to see neither of the characters weaken. They keep challenging (without betrayal or meanness) each other as they unfold for the other. In other films the parents would have stayed paper cutouts, yet the viewer is taught to forgive them, even though only a tidbit is revealed.
It is also satisfying that the real point of the film is subtle and gently repeated and has nothing to do with the title. Anyway if you can get passed a bad title, are sold on both actors as terrific and want to see how Christine Lahti directs, go for it. It is a tear-jerker.
