So, back in 95-96 they rereleased Star Wars on VHS. The cover art was new, and the footage was all restored.

Well, I was at Video Gallery and noticed on the shelf, a DISCOUNTED version of the old trilogy.

"Whoa," I thought, "the old ones look so much cooler!"
Later some friends came by and I was all like, "Let's watch Star Wars."
I whipped my new investment from the bag and my response was something to the effect of, "Dude, they just rereleased those restored. You ripped yourself off."
Then when I mentioned that I got the old one on purpose I was hit with some random laughter.
I dunno. I can't be the only one who thinks I made the cool choice. I think that the old styled tapes will give me a more enduring happiness.

The more I think about things and read about the DVD versions of the original 3, the more I hope that Lucas releases the unaltered original form as an option.
You're not a geek. You're a purist http://www.joblo.com/ubb/wink.gif
When I read about Natalie Portman filming scenes that would be inserted into ROTJ I stopped to wonder if Lucas planned to insert too many things. When all is said and done I'm wondering which will be in his mind the "proper" way to watch the movies. 4-6 then 1-3? or 1-6 in order? Personally to me it will always be 4-6 then 1-3 so I hope that he doesn't stick too much into 4-6 that will ruin the flow of the story.
To me if you were to watch 1-6 in order after never seeing any of them before, you would miss out on thinking Darth Vader is evil. You wouldn't be surprised at the "Luke, I am your father" line the way the rest of us were so stunned in our childhoods.
Obviously a lot will depend on how much is explained in Ep. 3 eventually.
I think it would be great to have two separate copies. Heck, a 3 disc set for each of the original films: original, special edition with new footage, other stuff.

Thats a key point.. There is so much that Lucas has to explain to bring together these two series. It seems as if the gaps are getting closer and closer together; however, there is still a lot of ground to cover.
If Lucas is able to successfully bridge grand canyon size gap between parts 2 and 4, part 3 would make an AMAZING addition to the series. I look forward to it.

Now heres a point that hasnt been DIRECTLY mentioned. Why would Lucas WANT to release the old versions when he pretty much re-wrote the story with new context?
There are some interesting new vibes that I have sensed from this narrative as a whole. No longer is the story simply about literal good vs evil. This story has become a story about love and hate. It compares and contrasts the characters of Anakin and Luke as by studying the differences in their situations.
I personally would not really mind it if the originals were not released on the new DVDs. It would actually make sense to me.

Yeah, and while lucas is at fucking up the original series for dvd, he might as well relplace the light-sabers with walkie-talkies. http://www.joblo.com/ubb/smile.gif

Well, that's the thing. The original 3 movies were seemingly about good and evil. There are a lot of archtype figures in the films. However the suspence and amazing realization at the end that the story was in fact about the life of Anakin Skywalker would be totally spoiled if Lucas assumed that we would all want to watch them 1-6 in order that way.
Personally I liked that realization and am glad for the new movies being made to finally explain how Vader became what he was.
All I really beg for in an Ultimate edition of the trilogy is the following:
Some new dialogue (somehow) between Vader and Obi Wan in their first meeting in A New Hope - It wasn't very dramatic, seeing how it was their first meeting since their epic duel.
You'd expect Vader to be mighty pissed, but he wasn't.
Touch-up the effects, again. One thing that REALLY annoyed me was the fact that the space ships in the Special Edition trilogy didn't have any new digitally placed dials or computer screens - The X-Wings had mostly black screens, which was awful.
And touch up some sets that were too 1970s looking for my liking. (Although, that may be taking away some of the point http://www.joblo.com/ubb/wink.gif)

Hmmhhm...That was actually Spieleberg's idea when he re-released ET http://www.joblo.com/ubb/biggrin.gif So i'm assuming (or making an ass out of you and myself http://www.joblo.com/ubb/biggrin.gif lol ) that you were thinking Lucas did it once...

actually, i was making fun of spielburg and lucas because changing the guns in e.t. and editing footage from 1-3 into 4-6 are foolish ideas.

How is Natalie Portman going to fit in the Return of the Jedi. I'm getting weird Edward Scissorhands/Winona Ryder in old person make-up telling a story to Ewoks or something.[shivers]
I don't know if those pictures are showing up in my original post, but here are the web addresses to the pictures:

The first ones are true to the form -- they all have that Boris Vallejo style that was copied so much in the 80s. To me, the new ones are sort of lame, and it still makes no sense to me why The Phantom Menace had that old-school style to it. The least I want is consistancy with Lucas' perfection fetish.
You are right, Scrunch. I'm not a geek, but I could say I have geek-tendencies. http://www.joblo.com/ubb/smile.gif
Does anyone else do "off-the-cuff" types of things such as what I did?
Another thing that I do that it seems my friends aren't into is getting to the movie in time for not only the trailers, but also time to sit as close to the middle of the theater as possible.

Ive been having the same problem. What I do is I tell my friends that the movie is one hour earlier than it is. It has worked fine so far.

I'm the same way about trailers. In fact, I'm usually pissed off when I miss them. But I think I've trained my friends well because they all want to see them too. http://www.joblo.com/ubb/smile.gif

I'm with you Irene, the old boxes are much classier than the new ones, much like the films inside... my take is, Lucas can do whatever he wants to his movies, as long as the originals are preserved. Isn't there a story about a painter getting arrested for breaking into a museum to touch up his work?
