Nice visuals, comfusing script--at times--, good perfomances but still something missing. That something that made Lynch's films tooooooo weird.
Has anyone seen it? I remember reading a good review in Empire magazine but, but never seen or heard anything about it since yesterday when i finally saw it.
There was a certain shot which i think DARREN ARONOFSKY borrowed for his recent movie RfD. I'll explain:
We see this girl in the bathtub from above then there is a shot inside the bathtub, were she screams in the water. Just like Jennifer Connely in "Requiem for a Dream".... naughty boy Darren...
Have you seen it?

This was a great anime. Totally fucked up, and confusing, but awesome and entertaining. The animation was great, and there enough twists and turns to keep everyone satisfied.

I agree. It was very good, but weird and confusing at times. Definitely Lynchian at times.
I think I saw this one as a double bill along with X.
It was more Hitchcock than Lynch in my view. It is well worth checking out.

I have that flick on DVD. Not a bad flick, it is very Lynch-like though. A bit too slow for an anime. At times I was bored to tears.
It would have made a better live action film.

Perfect Blue is definitely a "mind-fuck" movie. It's pretty damn good! Great animation, a solid story, and enough twists and turns to keep you confused... and entertained.

PERFECT BLUE is an excellent movie, provided you have a lot of patience are not too insistent on linear plotting (ie, don't mind if the flick makes no sense).
I agree with JCR on the Hitchcock thing, since BLUE left me with a very VERTIGO-esque taste in my mouth.

Fantastic movie almost all around. I had some trouble with the credibility in some of the scenes (something to do with how a character is dressed, don't remember the exaact point, haven't seen it in a while) but otherwise, perfect. And so fucking extreme too, the violence was insane (the icepick in the eye anyone?) and the rape was really intense (eventhough it was staged in the movie's universe). And what a soundtrack, it's like something right out of Silent Hill. 9/10.
And I agree with JCR, it seemed more Hitchocky than Lynch.

I own this on DVD but haven't watched it since the day I bought it (and that must have been about five years ago). Time I gave it another spin methinks. I do remember getting a David Lynch crossed with Dario Argento kinda vibe from it though. And I remember it being visually quite striking.

This movie is basically the result of Lynch having sex with Cronenberg while digging up Hitchcock's dead body and then having sex with that. But seriously, this movie rocked my socks off. I love it. At first its this normal story about a chick who's becoming this huge pop star. Then I dont even know what the hell happens. But I had a great time. Check this one out. I'm going out of a huge limb here, but, this is one of the best psychological thrillers I've ever seen.

yeah it's a real mindfuck but so great that it gets multiple viewings.

Stylistically and thematically it was like De Palma meets Lynch, or Body Double meets Mulholland Drive.
Sadly, Perfectly Blue wasn't a great film, but it wasn't too bad either.
Of course those who are in love with the film will refute what i'm about to say, to upkeep the mystery. But the film doesn't require a rewatch or multiple viewings, the story is pretty straight forward. For most of the film we are seeing Rumi's imagination. Its only at the very end that we see the real Mima for the first time.
2/4
edit: 2/4 was a bit harsh, maybe its a 3/4. The comparisons to Lynch and Hitchcock set the bar high, and PB failed to live up to such high expectations, but it was still a good thriller.

The live action movie (Yume Nara Samete) is very little like Satoshi Kon's animated version. It follows the original novel, which Kon thought would make a bad movie and thus drastically altered, much more closely. For those who thought Kon's movie was boring stay very far away from this one...zzzz...
On another note: I always thought of Perfect Blue and most of Kon's work as an homage to Phillip K. Dick.

I heard the live action one was weak. I'm a big Kon fan, so when I heard he decided to change the novel, I just assumed it was for the best and never gave the live action one a chance.
