METROPOLIS 8/10
I don't know about you, schmoes, but this movie was too good for animation. I haven't really seen much manga animation or the Fritz Lang masterpiece. So, i just will say that i found it powerfull in terms of "having something to say"--i was really impressed by it. Because nowdays Sci-Fi films have really nothing to talk about, with few exceptions... I read that the original Metropolis(1927) is way more powerful, but i just think that feeling is all that matter, if a film is true on that i forgive plot gaps and stuff. Ok not all that matter... I loved A.I for the same reason. I know people hate films like this--But i really think that if they look deeper they 'll see that there is something more than a big bright surface. It would be really cool if it was made in real action...
In a nutshell, its got everything drama, action, thriller, romance. And if not a must see... it is really a beautiful film, and from what i have seen...the best anime film ever created!

from my limited knowledge of japanese culture manga is the cartoon style and anime is when that is porn, and hentia are still images.

Well I must disagree I just watched this a day or two ago and yes the animation style was not your typical anime that I am used to.
It reminded me more of a Mario Brothers cartoon than anything else.
Yes it was sweeping and monolithic but the plot was nothing new especially for the Japanese.
Find the humanity in machines, find the machine in man, the strugle between both.
I did not think it was the worst thing I have ever seen but it is not in the same class as Akira or Warriors of the Wind.

Your knowledge isn't just limited. It's wrong. The term manga refers to the comic books from which many of the actual cartoons are derived. Anime is a blanket term for all of the actual cartoons themselves (a small percentage of which are actually pornographic by nature). Hentai is a pornographic sub-genre of both manga and anime. The thing that many westerners don't realise is that in Japan animation is used to create movies that cover just about every genre imaginable. Many of these don't make it to the West resulting in most westerners believing that all Japanese animation consists either of giant robots battling it out or schoolgirls being raped by penis tentacled demons.

thaks for that mate, you learn something new every day.
I do count anime as a proffessional form of cinema in my book it's just way too hard to get old of any over here.

Metropolis was my first (and so far only) anime movie. I thought it was good, but nothing spectacular. 7/10

Actually I thought Blood was good to be only 40 minutes long.
I still have not seen Metropolis, I keep meaning to.
Another great anime is Ghost in the Shell, anyone that’s a fan of sci-fi films such as 2001: A Space Odyssey and Blade Runner should see this. This is an intelligent film and some people don’t get it, my friends had to have me explain the movie to them when it ended. 10/10

METROPOLIS is definitely one of my favorite anime films. Much better, IMO, than AKIRA.

the main problem i have with Metropolis is the pacing, it really sucks. the characters, animation, soundtrack are all excellent but its so damn slow at times
still it was enjoyable and great to watch

Visually it was spectacular but i'd be a liar if I didn't admit that as the runtime crept over the one and half hour mark I started getting a bit restless. The movie actually felt like it was more than two hours long and I was surprised to note that was in fact less. Still as an example of animation as art it certainly qualifies. I'll probably watch it again sometime. I liked it that much at least.

I've been interested in "Metropolis" since I saw the trailer in the "Cowboy Bebop Movie" DVD but I'm afraid to buy it. I was very interested in the plot but I really disliked the 'Astro-Boy' like character designs, makes it look like something right out of a Mega-Man game.
Should I watch it? Have in mind I really disliked "Akira".

Well, actually "Metropolis" is based on the manga by Osamu Tetsuka (R.I.P), who also created "Astroboy" and "Kimba the white lion", and probably the whole manga/anime genre.
I don't know, but I got the feeling that you may not like it. Try to rent it or borrow it from a friend first.

Anyways, yeah, I'll rent it/borrow it before giving it a buy. Thanks.
