This is from showbizdata.com about the Blue Crush spammer:

The founder of the Rotten Tomatoes website <www.rottentomatoes.com> has voiced his suspicion that a paid publicist connected with next weekend's surfer movie Blue Crush has been posting messages on various movie-related Internet forums pretending to be an ordinary fan of the movie. (Sample: "Hey there! How is everyone's summer going? I am definitely NOT looking forward to going back to school. ... The only movie left this summer that I still want to see is Blue Crush.") Senh V. Duong claimed in a message to entertainment reporters over the weekend that whoever was behind the bogus postings also collected the email addresses of all the users of the message boards and sent ads for the film to them. "The sad part," said Duong, "is that these sites rely on advertising to stay afloat, and these studio guys are trying to get a FREE ride." Publicists connected with the film could not be reached over the weekend.

I just wish the person wasn't spamming for BLUE CRUSH because it's giving the movie a bad name and I want to see it. Why couldn't they have spammed for The Master Of Disguise? DAMN! Oh well, I'm still seeing Blue Crush.

Funny you should mention that - I've had a few similar emails about that myself, interesting.

More news from showbizdata.com:

An editorial writer for an Internet movie fan site claimed Wednesday that he has traced the IP address of a person who planted a rave review of the upcoming movie Blue Crush on its message board to Universal Pictures' registered corporate site, MCI.com. (As we reported previously, the same review was posted on other movie fan sites.) The HollywoodBitchSlap.com writer, who goes by the nom de plume "OZ" ("We're not giving out our personal details.") claimed: "We've got them caught red-handed, and not once, but twice!" (A similar message, he said, was posted for the upcoming Red Dragon.) After Sony publicists admitted last year that they had invented a critic named David Manning to praise the studio's movies in its ads and had used studio employees in testimonial commercials, Universal publicity chief Terry Curtin told the Washington Post, "I don't condone either of those practices, nor have I done either of those practices." However, the HollywoodBitchSlap writer asked, "What's the difference between paying your staff to pretend to be film fans on websites across the country and paying them to pretend to be happy customers in a TV commercial?" Curtin was not available for comment at our deadline.

Well, another day, another film studio trying to transform the internet into it's own personal advertising cess pool. My only regret is that I had never intended to see BLUE CRUSH in the first place, which means I can't vow that I will now never see BLUE CRUSH due to these advertising techniques.

Hey what's up, I saw your name on a movie site guestbook and was wondering if you wanted to talk. So what's your favorite movie this summer? Mine is probably minority report, I really liked the action in it. Have u noticed how many bad sequels came out this summer? It seems like studios are just putting out the same movie over and over again. I guess that's kinda why I want to see Blue Crush. Its just so different from everything else. I even went to the movie's site at blue-crush.com and was pleasantly surprised. You should definitely surf on over (pun intended!). have you heard anything about the movie? I'd like to know what some people think before I drag all of my friends to go see it. Write back soon, I'd like to know what u think about summer movies and Blue Crush. Later.

does anyone feel like being aggressive about this, and returning e-mails to this person under an annonymous e-mail, saying things like:

i really feel the teenage audience wants to see more old people in movies

surfing is so passe! everyone is into the hacky sack nowadays. if blue crush was about hacky sack, i'd see it.

i don't think teens would like a title like "Blue Crush" == something like "Crazy Surf Adventure 2002" would be better.

a surf movie with out annette and frankie? count me out!

oh, i love surf movies, but only body surfing!

the movie should have more gangster rap in it.

you all get the drift. if they want to publicize and get free feedback, give them misinformation up the ying-yang!

This is only one aspect of the new, more aggressive guerilla marketing. There are people here in NYC who are hired by big name companies too "advertise" their products.

They will wear a certain name brand of clothes and go to a hot nightspot or restaurant or anywhere tourists frequent, and pretend to be just a regular everyday New Yorker while they chat up unsuspecting patrons, and talk about how great the clothes they are wearing are.

They do this with any number of products, including cell phones, sneakers, shoes, shirts, alcohol(hey let me buy you a Bacardi Silver mate),and whatever else can be effectively marketed on the street.

No matter what cheap tricks they use, ultimately the public will decide, and this film looks like claptrap. If i was just starting puberty,i would be the first in line, but since i'm way past that awkward stage,Blue Crush(sounds like a soft porn film),just makes me blue in the face.I'd rather watch that godawful Tom Green film again, that came out a couple of years ago.

I don't mind someone plugging their film, they have too,it's only when someone does this in a deceptive nature that i take offense.

I dont see this as a big deal. So some dude posted shite. Either you like the movie or dont like movie..either you want to see it or not.

My view of the movie will not be swayed by this. to me it looks moderatly entertaining. Its a renter if there is nothing else to rent in my eyes.

no harm no foul in my books.

lol - you caught me. i did a campaign with a company promoting gin. we do excactly what you said we do. however, we always made it apparent that we do work for the company, and would offer samples and so forth, but you are right -- the trick is to start off casual, then work in the plug

the one difference i see is that this movie is geared toward teenagers, and it is most likely that the people infiltrating aren't teenagers. it is one of the trials surrounding the annonymosity of the internet.

If you are of drinking age, try seagrams gin -- there is now a lemon flavor which goes great with tonics! haha

In the words of Fry, (Futurama, if you didn't know that I blame you for the cancellation and you are worse then this blue crush person, anyhoo)
"in the 20th century they advertised on tv, radio, newspapers, billboards, internet, buses, in the sky, and on bannanas, but never in our dreams."
Just switch dreams with email.
