View Full Version : Number of movies you've seen yearly and/or in your LIFETIME (if you've kept track)
the movie guy

Hi, I'm 17 years old (born March 28, 1985) and I love movies (duh). I was wondering if I wasn't the only person my age that keeps an exact record of how many movies I've seen each year, and even (*GULP!*) close-to-exactly how many movies I've seen in my lifetime (except for maybe 10 or 15 movies that I really just don't remember seeing from age 0 to 5). Is there anyone else out there that's as obsessed (or weird, maybe) as I am? (I sure hope so. This IS a movie discussion forum afterall...)
I knew I was obsessed with movies when I began a collection of my movie ticket stubs for every movie I've seen in the theatre since Mortal Kombat in August of '95 (age 10). In '98 I started to keep track of every movie (theatre AND non-theatre) I saw for the year. Last year I watched exactly 250 movies (82 in the theatre, the rest on video, DVD, or TV). This year I have seen 60 movies so far in the theatre, and only 49 on video or DVD (I haven't watched a single movie on TV this year. I quit TV altogether as of three months ago, just because, so that's one reason why this number is so low). Anyway, this is way more movies than any other person I personally know sees a year, but what are you own tallies, people?
Okay, fine... I'll tell you the total amount of movies I've seen in my lifetime. This all started in the winter of 1998 when I read through Mick Martin and Marsha Porter's Video Movie Guide 1999 and searched around www.imdb.com (http://www.imdb.com) for many hours (hell, weeks probably) in search of all the movies I had seen, so here's the number...
(Interesting...) At this date, it's exactly 1,300 movies. This only counts each movie I've seen once; it does NOT include multiple viewings. These are the movies that I remember enough to have given an A to F rating of also, so if I couldn't give it a rating, it ain't part of this total. With this said, I've spent almost 16 weeks of my life watching movies nonstop without a repeated viewing.
Come on. SOMEONE has to have had the time to do these calculations for themselves too... right? RIGHT?

I can't possibly recall every single film I've ever seen, but it certainly runs in the hundreds.

I was just wondering how old everyone was though too. Or is that too much to ask for?
And, Feverdog... Yeah, you have a life! Even if it's only a life of MOVIES. Hell, that's MY life - watching and making (short) movies.

Oh. My. God. I'm exactly the same way, Movie Guy! Jeeze. I never expected to run into anyone who had the same affliction -- but this IS online, so I guess all that "uniting the planet" mumbo-jumbo might actually carry some weight. My running total is just under 12 hundred. But I was born in 1984, so I've got a reasonable excuse. Freakin' A, man! We should hook up. Together our total would be, what, 2500?
Here's to the true maniacs!,

Nice try, Kiel (a good friend of mine, playing a practical joke, people). Now either sign up for real, or shoo, fly.

I have no idea how many films I've seen in total, but last year I saw around 300 films.

movie guy, it`s such a wonderful topic.I`m keeping track with lists for every year since about 1995.I`m 17 years old too and by now I believe I`ve seen around 1378 (I just checked). It doesn`t include multiple viewings, of course.
I guess, I started REALLY to watch many movies around 1996.But most movies I saw 1999 -312.

Awesome, Favorite End. You have me beat, but I shall catch up and conquer soon enough. Bwa ha ha ha ha! (j/k) How dare you be beating me by ONLY 78 movies though? lol. Do you have any count of the most amount of movies you've seen only in the theatre in one year? I'm predicting I'll see about 90 this year, but my highest ever is 83, like I stated in my first post. Some year I'll break 100 though. Some year...

Actually, just within the last week or so I'm begun to compile a list of all the movies I have seen. I'm sure by the time the list is complete it will be very very long!

Damn, boy! Hey, how about I rate every one of those movies that I've seen? LOL! Well, I might not finish all of them today, but I'll work on the first part, at least. (And where are YOUR ratings for them, huh? http://www.joblo.com/ubb/wink.gif )

Really, all I asked for was a number (of movies seen) and your age. I don't need a list of thousands of movies on this board, but an e-mail of it would be cool, if you wanna do that. I could e-mail mine too, of course.
Directed toward everyone:
But, hey, if people WANT to read huge lists of every movie other people have seen, by all means, tell me to shut up and then post away.

(Speaking of critics, I wonder how many movies EBERT has seen...)

Well lets see, im 18 and I own 289 movies. I go to the theater about 30 times a year. I rent an average of 3 movies a weekend. So I'd say in my lifetime I've seen somewhere around 3637 movies. But for some odd reason, I guarantee its higher than that. My exact number can never be posted because I used to work at a video store and would get 2 free rentals a night. So im sure its way more than the number I posted.

I'm 17, which means I've actually lived for seventeen full years and am well into my 18th year, four months and some amount of days, to be more exact. http://www.joblo.com/ubb/smile.gif I love movies as well, just as much or maybe more (bring on the arguments) than the schmoes that post here. The way I keep my records of the films I watch is entirely by memory. I didn't start a comprehensive list of ALL the films I've seen since last summer, and that took me months to compile (currently in Microsoft Excel). I still don't think I have all the movies listed but pretty much I have them all. The need to have all those movies listed and filed was sparked when I first joined this discussion board, otherwise I wouldn't have really cared to, because all I was interested in doing was watching all the great ones. The only thing I did for lists was starting in 1999, was writing what I saw over the summer, grading it, keeping a record. Then it escalated and logging all the movies I watched on paper became an everyday thing. I would date, grade, and make a one-line comment on the movie. My aim for one night is to see two movies, but sometimes it just doesn't work out that way, and I end up seeing nothing. Its because I'm very picky about what I watch at what time, and if I have too many that I'm interested in, I can't watch any of them. ANYWAY.... I don't keep a yearly track record of how many movies I have seen, though I have the amount of movies down on paper, but I'm too lazy to do so. But, I do regularly keep records of the amount of movies from each year, which is very helpful when making a top ten list. And I always see more on video and dvd, mostly because of the lack of good films out there in theaters, and my anal attitude towards finding the right movie to watch. I usually only see about thirty or forty at the theater per year. If the film doesn't look like it will be good, then I will most surely avoid it, and so on.... The current number for the amount of movies I've seen in my lifetime is pretty close to yours "movie guy", 1,335 films. But that is NOTHING compared to some numbers blurted out by other schmoes. I kid you not, that number right there, is SMALL. The most available piece of evidence is Jackson's number.
But that wasn't always the main part of my obsession. Starting in the spring of 1995, I began cutting out, and collecting newspaper ads for movies. Every day that the ads were large enough and worth cutting out, I would spend time on the livingroom floor cutting up the entertainment section in the paper. Then it got worse, at the start of the summer in 98', I got the idea that I should get MORE cutouts from a movie, because during the time a movie opened and left theaters, I only had about 10 good ads cutout for it, sometimes only a couple for each movie. So, I decided to borrow from my good parents' purse and ride to a newspaper stand, and get multiple copies of the newspaper, just so I would have more copies of the ads. I must say that was THE MOST CHILDISH and not to mention STUPID thing I've ever done in my life, all in the name of movies. I was almost embarrassed to tell the story, but what the heck, why not? I continued on my newspaper spree till the end of 2000, where I became too busy in my life to do it anymore, and plus I was watching more movies then, so I really didn't care to waste my time cutting up the paper. October to December 2000 have yet to be filed still, not that anyone else cares. But all the monthly cutouts from summer of 95 to then, are filed in page covers, in a box, lingering amongst the dust that clouds my closet http://www.joblo.com/ubb/biggrin.gif Also, instead of writing the movies I saw at the theaters on a piece of paper, I would take an 11 x 14 sheet of paper, and for each "newer" movie I saw, I would take the title, cut it out from one of its newspaper ads and glue it on there, by columns. Kind of like a scrapbook list, to go in conjunction with cutting out the ads, along with my rating of the film at the top. I was actually proud of that, but it hasn't been done for about a year. I abandoned it a while after cutting out the newspapers, for a less time consuming log of the movies I watch.
Also, I prefer Maltin's movie guide to Martin and Porter's. http://www.joblo.com/ubb/smile.gif

I watch LOTS of video/DVD, so I'm not sure.
But I keep all my ticket stubs in a box of all the movies I see.

The only way you could get that many movies under your belt is if you averaged more than a movie a night for the last nine years (assuming that before you were in 3rd grade, you were not actively watching films). James Berardinelli, most likely a middle aged dude, has seen about 6000 films over the past 30 years. And hes seen a lot of shit..
Its just hard to believe that you watched films at a higher pace than he has...

Jeez, I gave Saving Private Ryan a 6? I must have been cranky that day. I'll bump it up to 7, but no higher - I have a low tolerence for Speilberg schmaltz.
Very Bad Things kicks ass. I dug it. What can I say?
The Usual Suspects exists only for its ending that was designed to give the impression that there's more to the movie than initially meets the eye. There isn't.
O Brother is a collection of scenes rather than an actual movie.
I admired Blair Witch for what it was instead of disliking it because it wasn't what I wanted it to be.
Cider House It so excruciatingly earnest and sweet that it practically causes insulin shock.
Mallrats is just plain mediocre. Even Kevin Smith will tell you that.
I didn't like Lost Highway when I first saw it, but, again, I've come to accept it for what it is.
Read my Any Given Sunday review on IMDb (http://comments.imdb.com/CommentsAuthor?738440) if you wanna know why I like it.
Summer of Sam has been my favorite movie this summer. I've watched it about a dozen times, and just can't get enough of it. What can I say - I love New York, the 1970s, disco, punk and Yankee baseball.
Suspiria is indefensible; either you love it or hate it.
Reality Bites was my life at the time of its release. It's where I first discovered my future best friend Janeane Garofalo, it's as pop-culture obsessed as I, and I love the soundtrack. I still quote it often.
Fight Club is another movie that divides audiences. I can see why some people didn't like it.
Scream 2 was fun, and possibly the first movie to starfuck itself. What's not to love?
Jacob's Ladder? A 2??? Have you actually watched the movie? It flirts with brilliance so much, it deserves to be slapped.
And, yes, Gosford Park. "7" means good, not great. I enjoyed the performances and the dry, understated wit. Not for all tastes.

So, I decided to borrow from my good parents' purse and ride to a newspaper stand, and get multiple copies of the newspaper, just so I would have more copies of the ads.</font>
OH MAH GAH. That takes me back. I plastered my bedroom walls with hundreds of black-and-white print ads of movies over the years. I remember having a two-page Sunday ad for No Way Out as the centerpiece, then working my way out clockwise.
And after a while I started to staple smaller ads into a notebook. Jeez, what a geek I was. I won't even start describing the other notebook I kept - the one with the weekly schedule of my proto-virtual 15-plex. I was juggling showtimes and multiple prints like a pro while keeping every movie in the tri-state area playing in my dream theatre. Five large, five medium, five small auditoriums - I remember it like it was yesterday.
Then there was that other notebook in which I organized movies by studio, and yet another where I logged movies as either Pepsi- or Coke-sponsored. No wonder I didn't have many friends when I was a kid.

But for some odd reason, I guarantee its higher than that. My exact number can never be posted because I used to work at a video store and would get 2 free rentals a night. So im sure its way more than the number I posted.</font>
Forgive me if I find this hard to believe, but according to your numbers, you have seen the equivelant of one movie a day since you were 7 and two months old. This is equivelant to having spent more than 43 weeks (or 22%) of your life watching movies non-stop. Keep in mind also that you've spent roughly 30% of your life sleeping... Hey, it's cool if so much of your life has been spent watching movies (cuz movies ROCK!), but I'm just checking whether or not you did the math correctly yourself. And did you keep in mind that we don't count repeated viewings of movies on this topic? I'm just being inquizitive, I ain't meaning to bust your balls or anything. I did have a lot of fun doing all that math though! http://www.joblo.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Well psudoazn and movie guy, I average 5 movies a night (I'm an insomniac), and have since I was 6. That comes out to 16,425 movies. If I shave the 425 off for missing that number on some nights, when on vacation, over at someone else's house, etc... and another 2000 for repeated viewings, you're still left with a minimum of 14,000 movies I've seen. With that in mind, I really don't think it's so unlikely Jackson has seen 3600.
And for the record, Berardinelli doesn't see that many movies, by his admission he averages 3-5 films a week, I average 35, and many people who aren't even movie buffs rent more than 3-5 from my local video store, so it's not that hard to believe. The man who holds the record has seen something like 45,000 movies I believe. 3600 isn't nothing, but it's not out of the question by any means.

How does one determine what movies to include on your list? I mean, what about those movies you've seen parts of on television, or movies you've turned off because you didn't like them.
I've seen maybe half of Better Living Through Circuitry on cable (ten minutes at a time), and I turned off Pearl Harbor after an hour because I was so simultaneously bored and offended by it. So, have I technically seen either of these movies?

I do not count the movies I haven't seen all the way through, and I rarely count the movies I've seen on TV or VHS that I saw all of, but over several different time periods. Like, I have seen Predator on TV many times, and I've seen all of it, but it has all been scrambled together from over several year's worth of watching certain scenes so I do not count it as a movie I have watched and can give a fair grade to. I would have to sit through a showing of the ENTIRE thing before I would count it, most of the time.

WOW. Okay, I don't question you, but this other guy COULD still be off so that is why I questioned him. I'm just curious... Have you seen the movies Wounded (97) and Playing Dangerous (94)? I do not consider these movies at all GOOD, I am just curious.
Also, what's the longest time you've gone without sleeping?

Well, there used to be this website called like "MovieCritic.com" that allowed you to rate all the movies you'd seen, and I know on there I rated more than 1000 movies, but I believe last time I did that was in early '98, so I'm probably upwards to 1500-1750 by now. Yearly, since I started keeping track in 1996 I've seen over 100 probably every year (the exception being 2000 I believe), with I think a peak of around 150-160.

I understand what you mean by that friendly "envying" me.I have a friend and she has seen about 4000 movies (he`s my age).
About your question -maybe you won`t believe me, but the most movies I`ve seen in movie theater are 55.It`s not because I don`t want to see most of the movies in a movie theater -it`s the contrary. If there`s anything I adore it`s going into a movie theater and waiting for the trailers of the upcoming movies to start, and...but I think you know what the feeling is.The thing is, that here, in Bulgaria, most of the movies are directly in videoclubs, most of the movies across cinemas must be blockbusters, or at least with average incomes.Only during some festivals you can see really interesting movies.I`ll give you one example -I saw "The English Patient" in a movie theater in 1999 for the first time.

So far, it seems the majority of people who've posted are avid movie RENTERS, but maybe don't go to the theatres nearly enough. 83's my record for one year, and there has to be about 200+ movies that come out in American theatres a year (though it could be way more, I'm just guessing), so what's the largest amount of movies you people have seen in the theatre during one year?

Quentin, thanks for backing me up buddy. I know my number seems a little steep, but I do watch a shitload of movies. I work 8 1/2(1/2 hour for lunch) hours a day as a cashier at a grocery store, and when I get home I watch a little tv and then pop in a movie. I dont go to bed until 1 or 2 a.m., everynight of the week (my work day is 9am to 6:30pm). Some nights I dont watch a movie, I just watch tv, or if im out doing something, which isnt very often anymore, I dont watch anything. I average 6 movies a week, and on my days off from work I watch 2 or 3 movies because day time tv sucks! I will never know my exact number, thats just impossible. I do know that im 18, been watching movies on a regular basis since the age of 7, I watched them before that age, just not as much, I average watching 6 movies a week, I go to the theater an average of 30 times a year and I average 3 rentals a weekend. If someone wants to try and total all of that up, be my guest. I dont find any of the numbers mentioned on here shocking because I know im not the only one that watches tons of movies. In fact, I bet every number on here is actually higher than we think. Much higher.
I also keep an exact track.
Actually the number was 718, if my memory don't fail.

Well, I believe you, sir, though I do think that anyone who hasn't been keeping a record of how many movies they've seen and are just guessing by weekly avearges have probably seen LESS than they think, and not more. For I'm sure you must have gone places or done other things (camping, vacation, overtime at work, big time high school homework) often enough for your weekly number to be quite varied, right? However, maybe you already thought about that, and have already based your estimate of 3637 movies off it (though I'm sure you're counting multiple viewings of the same movie as well). Nevertheless, your number is certainly high, and higher than most 18 year olds on this Earth, so no matter what, this response is nothing but me just being jealous. http://www.joblo.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
