I dint really like silence of the lambs for some reason, the pace was just too slow. So I wasnt too excited about the new one. Except my friend is reading the book, she says its awesome. Even though the previews dont look great Ill probably go see it anyway. What do you think.

Evanfx20,
You can try from the start.I don't know if you realize that a book was written first , before Silence of the Lambs. You can look it up it is called." The Red Dragon" by Thomas Harris. The book was made into a movie called " ManHunter". This movie first introduces Hannibal Lector. After this movie was Silence of the Lambs. I think if you research it you might find that Hannibal is a smooth S.O.B.

Check into it.

Based on the novel, "Hannibal" is going to be very different from "Lambs," especially with Ridley Scott helming. I love the scene in the previews that shows Hannibal carrying Starling in his arms, like a 50's movie monster carries a damsel (i.e. "Creature from the Black Lagoon").

I have my hopes high for the third installment in Thomas Harris' film translations showcasing Lecter. "Manhunter" kicked "The Silence of the Lambs" ass, and was much more interesting. There is no denying that Hopkins is talented and portrays the good doctor in a brilliant fashion, but my favorite Lecter has always been the subtle but overpowering Brian Cox from "Manhunter". The scene you are talking about nightwatchmen is when Lecter saves Starling from the feasting of the pigs and has to carry her 'cause she is knocked out with tranquilizer darts. It definitely looks cool. I can't imagine a film with so much talent doing badly...I mean, "Hannibal" has Gary Oldman, Anthony Hopkins, Ray Liotta & Julianne Moore...that is almost dream casting, not to mention the talent of Ridley Scott behind the camera. If it's anything like the book, I can't wait...

I agree with you about Cox's "Lektor" (as it's spelled in "Manhunter" - what's the deal with that, anyway?) and Hopkins' Lecter. I love Hopkin's performance, but when I'm reading the books I definitely perceive Lecter as being more casual than consciously menacing. It's *what* he says, not *how*.

Don't get me wrong, Hopkins is great!

Although Dolarhyde was a grat villain (sad too), I was a bit bored by MANHUNTER. Plus it's dated horribly -- do FBI really wear Miami Viceish stuff? As for Cox as Lecter, he was ok, I don't remember him making much of an impression on me. (He was great in ROB ROY & NUREMBERG.) However, I am annoyed with Cox these days: basically, he's going around saying Hopkins has leached all the mystery out of Lecter. Nice man.

Useless info: Brian Cox was asked to play Lecter in "The Silence Of The Lambs" by Johnathan Demme. Cox turned him down, saying that he doesn't do sequels. Then they approached Tim Roth. Hopkins was the third choice...or so the rumor says.

I don't know what happened with the "Leckter" spelling either...It's a little odd though.

"Manhunter" may be dated, but it is much more interesting than "Silence" ever was...I mean, there is more going on than just the foreground stuff. Plus I dig Peterson more than Foster. I am so glad that Julianne Moore got the part. Also, Tom Noonan is one of the most troubled and interesting psychopaths to ever grace the screen. Everybody bashes "Manhunter" and Mann for being associated with "Miami Vice"...I just don't buy it. "Manhunter" has some of the most haunting images and surreal "sky" and ocean scenes I have ever seen. It is much better than "Silence" ever was...

...also, with Cox's Lecter, it's not what he does, it what's behind his eyes. His mind seems to be working frenetically behind his calm and placid face. Hopkins is all bravado...he even says so in the recent "Premiere" magazine issue that features "Hannibal"...

Yeah, Hopkins plays Lector like a movie monster, like I commented before.

Tim Roth? Hmmm... I don't know.

Anybody know how Harris feels about Hopkins' interpretation of Lecter?

Gene Hackman was asked to play Hannibal Lecter in THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, and Michelle Pfeiffer was Jonathan Demme's first choice for the role of Clarice. She turned it down because she found the subject matter too disturbing. Jodie Foster ruled, although I suspect Julianne Moore will totally ROCK as a more mature (10 years later) version of Agent Starling.
