View Full Version : Final Fantasy - yet another in the long list of crappy video game movies?

I personally think it's going to suck. Doesn't look very appealing at all.
Ebert and Roeper just gave it "two big thumbs up!" I still don't want to see it.

I'm sorry but I'm looking forward to the film. I loved the video sequences in the game and I believe as long as the story holds and the voices of the animated characters are okay, this could be sensational. But thats just my very biased opinion cos I loved the game so much.

I don't put much stock in Ebert and Roeper, but FF still looks pretty promising to me.

I am there Wendsday night. This film looks major cool. The graphics are amazing. And the story seems great. I hope this is a good video game movie after we had to sit through "Tomb Raider". I don't think this film will be the greatest movie of all time("A.I." will never be beat). I think it could be a fun and action-packed flick.

Ebert likes anything that's new and shiny looking (Episode I, anyone? Atlantis?), so I tend to ignore his reviews of movies like this.

I've read two reviews and while they extoll the virtues of the animation, they really rip the story.

I don't know. I'm kind of doubting the movie myself. Fist off I'm sick of the whol future thing. Hay Final Fantasy 6&7 were great but 8 just blew. Actually the past 2 Final Fantasys were rather on the lacking side. Esically 8 with it's plot holes. I hope the writers made a decient story line for the movie or I will be rather miffed.

Much to the distaste of most "die-hards" and "wannabe critics," 90% of all people liked The Phantom Menace. Was it great? No. But it was definitely a fun ride. Atlantis? Haven't seen it. Can't comment.

I think you better check that 90% again. Pretty much everyone I've talked to EXCEPT the hardcore fans didn't like it.

I think it is 90% if you take out Jar Jar. As for Final Fantasy I guess I don't get it. I've never played the video games but that doesn't bother me. I just think it looks so silly having computers do what humans can do, only crappier. They should have had real people in this cgi world or something. Or are they just trying to eliminate the actor from the process?

I hope not; it looks great so far, but unless they put together a good script it's be disappointing a la "Atlantis" and "Titan A.E.," both of which had great visuals but weak stories.

That's pretty much what I've read in reviews so far. Nice packaging, crummy interior.
What I've read is there's no character development at all, which kind of bugs me. I'll take story over effects anytime.

I am a big fan of the games (well 7, 8 and 9 anyway) and I have been waiting for this film to come out since I first heard about it. It doesn't open in the UK for around another month or so, so I'm quite saddened. At least it can't be anywhere near as bad as Mortal Kombat Annihilation (I only mentioned Annihilation because I thought that the original MK movie was rather good).
I just hope that there is actual character development and a good story in this, and not just a CGI extravaganza.

I loved Titan A.E. I'm pretty sure this movie will be outstanding too.

90% - I'm going off every fan poll website I've seen, and Phantom Menace tends to come in around 7/10 on every one, whether it be 3.5 stars out of five or a 7.2 rating on IMDb with over 30,000 votes.
I personally think it's much better than Return of the Jedi, but I digress...

The ads for this movie turned me off like a hooker named Ms. Wort.

The effects were simply incredible. They all looked so real!
The story line was pretty good too but it still was kind of a major let down.

Well, I saw it Thursday night and really liked it. The characters were a bit stiff, but overall the animation was fantastic to look at. The plot was kind of cool as well, even if some of the concepts were hard to get at first. Overall, I was impressed, and am disappointed by the film's performance at the box-office; it deserved better.
B+ or 8/10

How can they make a movie and call it Final Fantasy? Weren't all the storylines from the FF games individual ones? They didn't have anything to do with one another.

It doesn't come out in UK for another week but I'm really looking forward to it. Mainly because I'm such a huge fan of the PSX games, i feel biased towards having to like it!

I'm just ignoring all the negativity everyone has been giving this film and I'm gonna see it for myself. It's made by Hironobu Sakaguchi, they guy who actually thought of the 'Final Fantasy' games, so it should be enjoyable, for fans of the game series anyway.

Just because a guy can make a video game doesn't mean he has any talent for making a movie.

Well it was ambitious making this sort of movie, and at least he's given it a shot. Maybe if he were to make another (I know many of you are worried now!) it would be an improvement on this one. Hey, if I don't like it, I'll even say so myself and I'll list what I thought was wrong with it. But until I actually see it, I can't say much else.
Coolkid - My friend has already watched the film, he's a mega fan of the games (he never stops talking about them) and he says its a bit boring but it has got very entertaining scenes in it.

theINSIDER! says:
Ya know folks,"Mortal Kombat" is really the only succesful video-game film when you think about it.Hell,it was one of the highest grossing films of 1995 behind "Die Hard With A Vengence". Just thought I'd let ya'll know.
so says theINSIDER!
