I was wondering if anyone knew if "Rings" would have the book's opening or just a narrator's voice-over to introduce Middle Earth? Thanks!
Well, originally, Peter Jackson had quite an epic opening for the film, showing the history of the ring, Sauron etc. But he felt that this would be delivering too much information to the audience, especailly those who have never picked up the books or know the background, instead he opted to release this kind of information through the film's general narrative, through character etc.
Ian McKellen himself said that the new opening is "magnificent".
I actually think the opening of the film will just be Gandalf on his cart, with the fireworks, and some impressive orchestral score playing beautifully. That's all the film needs, an opening doesn't need to have punch, it needs to be suitable.

You're right, ak - the opening will be Gandalf on his cart coming to the Shire to visit Bilbo.

Doesn't Gandalf tell all of the story to Bilbo or something like that?

i don't see why the opening needs to be any different than the opening of the book, which is like you say, gandalf coming to the shire for bilbo's birthday bash.
