If you were wathing "Friends" tonight you may have seen the trailer for Harry Potter And The Sorcerer's Stone. And I am far from thrilled.

1. The dragon Hagrid hides in his cabin looks like something straight out of The Mummy Returns. http://www.joblo.com/ubb/frown.gif

2. Quidditch looks like "Spy Kids'" flying scenes. http://www.joblo.com/ubb/frown.gif

3. The troll that got in during the Halloween celebration and attacked Hermione looks like "Shrek"... http://www.joblo.com/ubb/frown.gif

WAHHHHH!!!! Did anyone see the preview?? Feel free to comment.

I agree, it looks less than promising, but little kids will love it nonetheless. As will fans of the book. Regardless of the CGI this movie will still make loads of money.

You know what, I don't see how they had any other choice for the CGI. Every movie goer knows what it looks like and can tell the difference. I guess it has just been beaten to death in past summers. UGH! Maybe they hadn't fully finished the effects, and what you saw was just a rough cut....

I think the poor CGI may take away from some of the experience of the film, as i too have seen some footage. Some of the flying broom scenes look alright, but not great, i've seen the same in various fantasy children's t.v series'.

I still think this film will be a good one though, it looks quite grown up for what it is.

Yes, I was greatly disappointed by the CGI in the commercial, it all looks so fake and 1980's (like when he's flying past, man I swear I saw something better than that in Superman in 1978). Alarming...

I just saw a trailer today, and man did it look like shit! I think this one may end up stealing the "Worst CGI of the Year" award from THE MUMMY RETURNS.

Is there a new trailer/commercial out there? I thought that the two previous trailers had very good, althought not groundbreaking SFX.

Good question.

Is there anywhere on the net that I can download this puppy? Everytime it's on TV I miss it by 3 seconds.

I saw this new trailer at my local cinema, on those small t.v screens they have in the entrance, i don't know if it's on the net or not.

I have never seen it but, what are ya gonna do about it? ILM is responsible for a huge chunk of its special effects. And they are considered the top SFX company out there.

I hate CGI! Give me a movie before CGI anyday! Give me built models and stop photograpy/animation and even fishing line on paper flying saucers any damn day instead of CGI.
My husband told me the first take of this damn movie was four hours long so major cutting was involved here and also they had to cut out one part that they filmed while flying over somewhere seems they picked up on some topless sunbathers! LOL!
I saw the preview at the movies and it looked ok, I didnt see the one on friends cause that show is like an enema.

I saw the preview last night, and the CGI was terrible! I didn't notice it before you said it! Man, was it fake. This just turns me off the film even more than before.

Even ILM make terrible effects you know. The Mummy Returns is a prime example of this.

I didn't see the Mummy Returns, so I don't really know, but I was led to believe that the bad f/x in that were a result as the movie being rushed.

Now that I think about it, the original Mummy didn't have that great of special effects, either - especially Imhotep himself.

To be honest, i wasn't particularly impressed with ILM's effects in Planet of the Apes either. I think they concentrated the most talented/experienced divisions on Pearl Harbor and A.I effects.

Wow, I just saw the TV spot, and the CGI does indeed look like almighty crapola.

Zing!

We all knew that to pull this movie off, CGI was going to have to be used extensively - however, I think the filmmakers need to remember the roots of CGI (animitronics, blue screens, stop-motion, puppetry, etc.) and not commit themselves 100% to CGI. Anyone over the age of 10 will NOT be impressed with shoddy computer effects. The flying in the quidditch matches I can accept - that is probably the best way to approach those scenes, but the scene where Hermoine is being menaced by the troll looks AWFUL! In the trailer you only see the troll for maybe a second or two, but even in that quick of time you can tell that it is TOTALLY fake and not convincing at all. I hope that is a test shot or something and is being improved upon (much like the tractor being thrown at the car windshield shot was a test shot for "Twister") because it doesn't bode well for the movie if that is really what the effects are going to look like!
