Isn't this movie supposed to be a romantic comedy? I thought so! Then I guess we have a problem, since this movie isn't romantic or funny. I thought I'd take a chance on this movie since I like Monica Potter and even though critics slammed it, I heard it was a fun time. The last time I took a chance on a movie was when I rented Saving Silverman, and that turned out great. So I took a chance on this one and I didn't get so lucky. The only thing that keeps this movie alive, dare I even say alive, is Monica Potter. She kept me watching. I liked the part where the models gave her the makeover, she looked really beautiful after that, but she looked really beautiful in the first place. And I'd have to go with that as my favorite scene, and that doesn't say much. Monica Potter is charming and sexy, but even she can't completely save this movie.
Amanda (Potter) is a single girl who moves in with four models. She falls in love with Jim Winston (Freddie Prinze Jr.), and he seems perfect. Amanda and her model friends spy on him since their apartment overlooks his, and one night Amanda thinks she see's him murder somebody. Did he really do it? Will Amanda and Jim have a happy ending? Who even cares? I didn't really. Potter was charming enough to keep me interested and I liked her character, too bad she just wasn't in a better movie. Her talent was wasted. I didn't like Freddie Prinze Jr. in this movie, he wasn't charming at all and all he knows how to do is grin.
And what the hell was up with those models, they couldn't even play dumb good. All they did was trip and act stupid and they just weren't funny. They weren't even that pretty. I can't believe they expected us to laugh at them, they were so unfunny it's hard to believe. And the part where Freddie Prinze Jr. was on the toilet taking a dump? Again, not funny. Monica Potter got me to smile, but she's the only one. The movies plot wasn't that bad, it just needed a better script. I think it might've worked better as a dark comedy. And they would also need a new cast, keep Potter, and replace everyone else.
In the end, I just didn't care if Jim and Amanda got together. Some romantic comedy when you could care less if the characters you are supposed to want to get together do or not!!! Luckily Monica Potter should be able to walk away from this movie and move on to bigger and better things. And to Freddie Prinze Jr., choose some different roles for once, then we'll be able to see if you can actually act.
I remember watching the episode of Ebert and Roeper and The Movies that they reviewed this on, and Roger Ebert said that it's starts out very funny but then goes down hill. Well, when I went to the video store today and I looked on the back they had a qoute from Roger Ebert saying "I laughed, and laughed, and laughed." So I double checked his review and I was right, he didn't like it, so why was this qoute on the back?
Anyway, Head Over Heels isn't the worst movie I've seen, but it isn't that great either. Without Monica Potter though it would have been even worse, she sure as hell couldn't have read the script before signing on to this movie. Unless you're a die hard Monica Potter fan, I don't recommend "Head Over Heels."
