Texas Chainsaw Massacre(9/10)

Probably one of the greatest horror films of all time, this masterpiece of ambient terror set the standard for many others to follow. Low budget, gritty and absolutely terrifying. The disturbing music score rumbles and rattles as the notorious and demented family terrorize and kill young folks who fall into their clutches.

There's no gore but it is not needed, the brutality would not be considered much today. What is hard about watching this film is the emotionally draining scenes where Leatherface is chasing young and terrified Marilyn Burns over and over again. The trauma she suffers when she's caught and subjected to the images inside the family's house; it's absolute madness! The ending to this is quite good and it makes you think they're still out there.

The many sequels were unnecessary, as usual, and some say this is nothing but exploitation fare. Supposedly and very loosely based on serial killer Ed Gein.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre part 2(7/10)

Enjoyable sequel to the classic original. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre was never this humorous and the approach Hooper used in this sequel makes it different and a very good watch. I watched the original 95 minute version of the film and I was disappointed. Tom Savini's gore was cut out and this really spoiled it for me. Well, those gods of horror film releasing Elite have unleashed this very necessary 111 minute version with all the trimmings.

The twisted Sawyer family are back and they're still in the meat business. The story has a couple of young punks raising hell in a car. The two call up DJ Stretch (Caroline Williams) on a cell phone and she hears them meet their gory demise. The rest is history as witness Williams is pursued by the crazy family. She enlists the help of Lefty (Dennis Hopper in an incredible OTT role).

A statement I have made more than once: TOM SAVINI IS A MAKE-UP GOD!!!! There are some very similar scenes to the first movie in this. Very good film nonetheless.

Leatherface:Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3(4/10)

The third installment falls very short, to the point that I thought it was disappointing. The so-called uncut version didn't have a whole lot more gore and it was missing a very famous scene that I kept hearing about. This one is more like a remake of the first with the exhuming of bodies, gas station sequence, the old house in the backwoods and the introduction of more family members. Maybe this is not supposed to be a remake though, as Leatherface is wearing a brace on his leg from the wound he received in #1. In a way, it would have to be a remake, due to the fact that he was killed in #2 (who can forget Savini's astonishing gore). Anyway, it's got a lot of inconsistencies!

The movie isn't all that bad, the opening is superb with Leatherface carving himself a new mask. Some nice metal music and Ken Foree kicking the families butts from here to Tuesday. The film just didn't try hard enough for the genuine scares though, they take the easy path with the obvious and predictable ones . Worth a watch but don't expect anything spectacular.

Return of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre(1/10)

You don't know how anxiously I wanted to see this. The only problem is I was let down, as in dropped off a sixty story building. I couldn't believe what original TCM writer Kim Henkel and the writer/director did. Henkel ruined everything fans loved about the films by turning Leatherface into a stupid looking sissy who towards the end of the film dresses up as a fat lady.

He chases around Renee Zellweger very unconvincingly as Zellweger tries to do a very bad impression of Marilyn Burns.

All the terror is lost and this can't even qualify as a sequel, it's more of a lame tribute or remake. Matthew McConaughey has an awful role and the family in general isn't nearly as creepy. They're not even real cannibals anymore, instead they eat pizza, what a farce!

The film never explains itself and the outcome leaves you very dissatisfied. The ending was awful and after seeing this tripe I'm drooling to see the original again.

(Note: A lot of you guys aren't big fans of horror, but have seen this film. I personally don't think of it as a strictly horror film, I think it is much more important to seventies films than that. I just wanted some opinions on this psychological masterpiece, dare I say "work of art" from you guys. I also think this film is as important as films like "Silence of the Lambs", "Deliverance" and "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest" to name a few of the hundreds of important contemporary films...)
"The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" - A Brock Landers Overview of A Tobe Hooper Film (10/10)

Franklin: "If I have any more fun today I don't think I can take it!"

In the summer of 1973, a group of young filmmakers went into the burning Texas
heat to make a horror film. They didn't have any delusions that they were making
art and they didn't have the Internet to promote it. All they had were cameras, a
crew and a desire to scare the shit out of everyone who would eventually see the
film…and I would argue that they succeeded. "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" is
gritty, sweaty and putrid. You can smell it in your nose, taste it in your mouth and
feel it in your bones. It's sticky, moist and stomach-churning…

The first time I saw "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" I was in my teens. I had
flown to Austin to visit a friend from high school, and we decided to see a
re-release of the film. Sitting in that sweltering theater, sans air conditioner, the
film took on a life of its own, making me feel something I had never felt before with
any film. As we drove towards Georgetown, Texas, miles outside of Austin in the
rural countryside, it began to sink in as we made our way through the night …no
streetlights, an old pot-holed two-lane country road, the occasional two-story
abandoned house settled in overgrown grass and weeds…boarded up windows,
burnt-out ceilings, faded and chipping paint, the smell of the occasional gas
station selling barbecue (most gas stations in Texas do) and the total blank
darkness of a hot, humid summer evening… I was fucking scared shitless…No
doubt in my mind, as I checked the gas gauge on the dashboard to make sure we
didn't get stuck in this hell on earth…with that said, you may better understand
why I like this film…it bothers the shit out of me and I love it for that…

"The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" (along with "Last House On The Left")
established a new sub-genre in horror…the "human" side of terror. I mean, these
guys weren't just monsters in boogeyman outfits. We (the audience) actually got
to see what human beings are capable of doing. Loosely based on Ed Gein, the
serial killer, "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" is a relentless depiction of a group
of teens who are subjected to death and degradation by a bunch of backwoods
crazies. The director, Tobe Hooper (who also co-scripted & produced), created an
unprecedented masterpiece that while not that gory…managed to frighten enough
cinema-goers as to collect a cult following as a horror classic. The amazing thing
that sticks with me is that you hardly see anything. All of the action takes place
under the frame, above the frame, behind the door, etc… but people still swear
they saw chainsaws ripping people apart…and you know what? They probably
did…I mean, the mind is a strange and wonderful thing…

The story goes a little something like this… a van full of teenagers is heading
across the Texas (filmed outside of Austin) wasteland. Everything seems to be
going okay for them…that is, until they pick up an odd little hitchhiker (Franklin: "I
think we just picked up Dracula."). He tells tham stories of cattle slaughter
(Franklin: "They just shoot a bullet in their head, and then retract it. It's just
BOOM-shht-BOOM-shht."), takes their pictures and, when he doesn't get paid for
his handiwork, he starts slashing out with a rusty razor. They naturally kick him
out of the van, but their road to hell is only beginning. When they stop off for gas
and a breather, they get hunted down one-by-one by a large man wearing the
skins of his victims on his face (hence "Leatherface"). And his preferred weapon?
Well… your guess is as good as mine…

"The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" is an acquired taste. It's also a horror classic full
of haunting images (ex: the vast blue Texas sky, spiders covering window, the
flash shots of the corpses in the beginning), great camera shots (ex: camera
moving up behind girl on swing, under swing as girl walks toward house, and
following her in as she discovers the house of horrors) and many memorable
scenes (ex:Teri McMinnon on a meat hook, Marilyn Burns passing out when
Grandpa sucks her fingers, spasming body being dragged into room after hammer
blow to head…metal door slamming). With that said, if you enjoy scary movies
and you haven't seen it yet…you should do so…very soon… (Old Man: "There's
just some things in life you got to do. Don't mean you have to like it….those
girls... those girls don't wanna go messin' round no old house!")…

Well Mike, all i can say is BLASPHEMY!!!How in the fuck can you rate part 4 higher than the original TCM? The original is one of the most frightening movies ever, the sequel is just an awful, stupid film, it makes my bottom 10 films of all time!

I thought part 4 was fun and entertaining and you could actually tell what was going on unlike the first one. It might not be up to the quality of the first one but it was a fun movie...
