Last year, my High School did this musical for the yearly big musical. I sat down and to my surprised actually enjoyed it, very much. So a couple of weeks I saw that the movie was on so I decided to watch and maybe even compare to my school's production of it. Now, even though I have never a terribly big fan of Barbara Striesand, I thought since I enjoyed my high school's production of it, I should enjoy the movie. I mean, a movie is done by professionals so it should be better, right? Well, it should but alas it wasn't. Infact my school put on a much better show. For the most part the acting was really bad. I mean, I wanted to strangle the two actors playing Barnaby and Cornelius. They were so annoying! Striesand was just so-so. The girl who played Dolly Levi in my school was a heck of a lot better (although, I must confess of being a little bias since I was in love with the girl who played her). And the film was just silly and incredibly dumb. The film's saving grace is Walter Mathua who is a lot of fun as the old, grumpy and rich Horace Vandergelder. He is a real treat. I suppose that the sets were colorful and costume design was pretty spiffy too. Some of the choreography was pretty great too (on the other hand some of it was terrible). So overall, this a harmless but mostly lame musical.
