From the director of Shine comes this atmospheric murder mystery starring Ethan Hawke. This book adaption revolves around the life of the lovesick Ishmael (Hawke), a journalist watching his former love's husband on trial for the suspicious death of a local fisherman.
What's so brilliant about this film is that a range of themes are exposed in depth - justice, unrequited love and passion, jealousy, mercy, war and racism. The sombre, sleepy, profound mood of the film exceeds previous levels of drama IF you are prepared to concentrate. While this film won't appeal to everyone (due to its subtle transitions), there will be a great reward for those who pay attention.
Ethan Hawke is admirable in the lead role, but the lawyers surpass themselves - James Rebhorn and Max Von Sydow.
The cinematography is beautiful - I just want to see all that snow again! I advise anyone who is serious about films to take a good luck at this. If you liked Shine, you will love Scott Hick's new creation.
