Batman: Mask of the Phantasm is the best film the bat-franchise. Gotham is presented the way it was meant to be seen, the story is character-driven and a wonderful mystery. I know many people haven't seen this film, but it is totally worth renting, even though it is a cartoon. Batman looks better as a cartoon because in the comics, he wasn't an actor in a rubber suit, but a man whos parents had been killed. I loved the whole looking-into-the past storyline. It gives us a little more insight on who Batman really is. He was presented waaaaay wrong in the last two bat-films. He isn't some happy millionare who is a happy and jolly individual. Everything about this movie is exactly how the Batman comics showed us they would be. I loved all the mob-boss characters. I thought it was really cool how they showed how the Joker related to them. I just loved the whole movie. Averybody who likes Batman (1989) and Batman Returns (1992) needs to rent this film next time they are at the video store.

I will have to rent that. I always thought that Michael Keaton played him best. He wasn't a happy millionare there. He was dark and withdrawn. I like the whole comic strip thing. If there was a real Batman, he'd be in a mental institution somewhere.

Cool "Ghostworldfan"- Im a big fan of the animated series and the movies by the same people.
I first saw Mask Of The Phantasm on the bigscreen at an animation festival about 10 years ago. I was an instant fan, the movie captures the mood and essence of the Bat perfectly- the retro 40-50's style adds to the visual splendor- In the voice department Mark Hamill (yep,Luke) is over the top great as The Joker. The plot is well rounded, the atmosphere is noir style dark and the animation itself is truly "Art".
For fans of this film the "Batman vs Mr Freeze:Subzero" movie is also a gem. (With some great computer animation too)- There is also an excellent "Superman/Batman" movie that captures both charecters strengths and weaknesses.
I own them all and thoroughly recommend any fan of Mask Of The Phantasm to see them.
