Hey guys...Happy Valentines Day! Have a good one over there. I don't think it'll be Valentines Day by the time you get this coz NZ and US are so far behind in time, but anyways, heres my review of...

Valentine

This is a typical teen slasher movie. It delivers where it counts, makes us jump out of our seats on the occasional bump in the score, has girls with big breasts that never care to show them, and overall its one of those movies with the 1 dimensional characters and endless amounts of blood and guts, but, hey, that’s what I expected. Don’t expect too much with Valentine and you’ll probably find it fun enough. I know I did.

The best thing about Valentine is that it takes on a daring new premise and is able to succeed in making us scared quite a lot at times and provides tension and suspense in the atmosphere, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Valentine actually had my muscles very tensed at times and I found a couple of killing sequences right near the end particularly suspenseful. The killings are also very creative and gory, and the camera-tricks used when the killings are been shot are very attractive and impressive, and add to the atmosphere of the movie.

Valentine’s acting is not exactly superior to other teen slashers such as the Scream series or I Know What You Did Last Summer, and we don’t care for the characters an inch because they aren’t developed, but storyline and characters aren’t exactly a big thing with slasher films. Valentine doesn’t actually have bad acting; it just could’ve been improved. Denise Richards plays the typical sexy bad girl, and does it well, although it would be nice to see her try something different. She looks good in a bathing suit, though. David Boreanaz has a lot of on-screen charisma but he doesn’t have enough screen time. Marley Shelton is the head and shoulders of the movie, she is a fairly good horror actress, but unfortunately she can’t anchor an entire film alone. I hate Jessica Cauffiel (from Urban Legends: Final Cut) and never will like her. She overacts horribly. Jessica Capshaw is probably the best actor in the film; she is one of the funniest characters and also one of the most emotional.

Jamie Blanks has proven himself as a good teen horror movie director. He knows how to provide mystery, have good set-ups, direct his cast well, pick neat tools for killings, and overall he impressed me with this movie. His directing in Urban Legend was also impressive. I would actually like to see this director take on something a little more challenging, because he has quite a lot of potential and I don’t want to see him stuck on teen slashers for the rest of his career. He just needs that script with more “oomph” and he’ll be on the road. I do applaud him for always bringing new life to the teen horror genre; first he makes legends scary, and now its Valentine’s Day. Who’d of thought?

I enjoyed this movie. Sure, it had plot holes, some of the deaths are too fast, the characters aren’t developed and we don’t care for them that much (it’s not like I wanted all of them to die, just some of them, but I was keen to see who would survive) and there is zero nudity. Not exactly the best flaws for a for a teen horror. Alas, the slick style, incredibly clever ending (especially for this genre) neat killings, fun premise, fantastic ideas and concepts, cool editing and camera tricks and an awesome atmosphere throughout kept Valentine on its toes for me.

Or maybe it’s just because I saw it on Valentine’s Day.

7/10

VALENTINE (2001)

I remember before this movie hit theaters. The TV spots were everywhere and it looked like a great new slasher. But once it came out in theaters most of the things I heard about it weren't very good at all. But I didn't care, I was still dying to see this in theaters. Unfortunately, I never got around to it. So of course I rented it the very day it was released on video. Despite what I heard, I was still expecting a lot from this movie, and I must say that I was a little disappointed. I still liked it, it just wasn't as great as I thought it would be. But then I saw it again later that night and enjoyed it more. And then a week or two later I saw it again, and by this time I was really able to appreciate it for what it was---an entertaining and creative slasher flick.

Valentine is not scary (other than one jump scene that actually got me), but it does have a cool premise and looks incredibly slick. I'm a sucker for good looking movies, and the cinematography here is top notch. The killer also has a nice and scary mask. I must admit that I'm glad the killer walked instead of ran when after a victim, it may not be very realistic, but it makes it scarier.

In my opinion, all of the actors were fine in their parts, nothing noteworthy but still good enough. The only one I didn't really like was Jessica Capshaw's character, I just didn't care about her. Denise Richards looked great, and that's basically the only thing she has to do, and she did it wonderfully. I wish Katherine Heigl would have had more screen time, I think she should have played a different character. Hmm..., I wonder what it would have been like with her in the lead!? I think it might have made the movie even more enjoyable. Marley Shelton does fine, but I think Ms. Heigl might have been a better lead.

Overall, Valentine could have been MUCH better. But it still is entertaining, looks great, has a cool looking killer, a cool twist, and some cool kills. So much more could have been done with it, but it is what it is and I can accept that. I really would like to see a Valentine 2 someday...

Grade: 7/10 or B- or ***1/2 of *****

Well, why start a new one when there's already one started?

Well, I don't see why. There's no harm in bumping up an old thread instead of cluttering the boards with new ones on the same subject/movie.

i loved this movie. I bought it the day it came out w/o even seein it (and i tell u it had nothin to do w/ the fact that it was only 10 bux on dvd) and i knew it would not disappoint.

the charactres are all paper thin, but they're all really hot and that was enuogh. The openning scene built up tension and that was a very good thing. As the rest of the movie played out, u could call each death about a mile away, but that didnt make the AWESOME kills any less enjoyable. Did i say awesome? these kills were fantastically creative, its only new genertation slasher rival (kill style) is Final Destination.

all in all, Valentine featured hot girls gettin their asses killed and threw the audience and wonderful ending. I love this movie - 8/10

A pitiful film that holds no merit. Horrible acting, predicatable cliche of a script and made for TV style production values.

No surprises, zero tension and downright dull. Not one scene that is redeeming, Im surprised I watched it all the way through but I was waiting for something to happen but nothing ever did.

Prdictable and boring are 2 words to perfectly describe this film.

Unoriginal, dull, and predictable. I knew this movie was gonna suck, just from reading the reviews.....and it did. The acting was DREADFUL. Denise Richards is the worst actress as of right now and gave yet another atrocious performance, a boring heroine (Marley Shelton) and a unscary villain. Dialogue written by people with IQs of a 5 year olds. Kudos for some of the original kills but other than that, the film is a giant piece of filth. 2/10

"Valentine" 2001

Directed by: Jamie Blanks ("Urban Legend")
Written by: Tom Savage, Donna Powers, Wayne Powers, Gretchen J. Berg, Aaron Harberts

Starring: Denise Richards, David Boreanz, etc

2/10

"Roses are red, Violets are Blue, They'll need dental records to identify you"

Plot: A group of twenty-something female friends begin getting threatening Valentines cards and are being offed by a killer in a cupid mask.

Review: Boring "modern" slasher that has little blood, no T&A, and tries to remedy these mistakes with supposed "witty" dialogue. The result, of course, is a mind numbing ride that is only made partially bearable by ogling Denise Richards clothed. That's a waste of time, though-- skip this and rent "Wild Things" to satisfy those urges.

While the film is supposed to be scary, I couldn't help but laugh at the killer's mask. Sanitized violence, no character development, and a poor backstory add to the pain of the film. I suppose that new people to the genre may find it interesting but true horror fans will be disappointed if they seek anything like 70s/80s slashers.

It woulda been a 1/10 if not for the lovely Ms. Richards.
