Ghost World. A perfect movie. In my opinion, better than Fargo, The Godfather, Star Wars, Crouching Tiger and Lord of the Rings. I loved ever single secong of this movie. I was counting down the days until it came on video and now that it's here, i can barely hold myself in. I just want to run up to every single person on the street and say "Ghost World is finally here! Rent it, dammit!". Steve Buscemi gives us hid best performane to date, and amazingly enough, Thora Birch gives an even better performance than her "American Beauty" one. I loved where the film was set; some dirty part of a probably nice city. It was in the slums. Enid (Thora) is just a girl who hates everything and is looking for her place in the world. She sees throught the phoniness of the world around her and hates it for that exact reason. I loved this movie. Even my name says so (ghostworldfan). I just wish the fiilm had had more publicity, because it sure deserved it. A em. A truly perfect film.

Ghost World is "Not Another Teen Movie". It is an honest and comedic look at adolesence.

I found the film to be very witty yet deep at the same time. The screenplay is terrific and the cast is amazing. Thora Birch was great as the very cynical Enid. Steve Buscemi gives another great performance here as Seymour and Scarlett Johanssen with her raspy voice was pitch perfect as Rebecca.

Different, witty, tragic, whatever. Ghost World is not your average teen flick. It's got brains and an attitude to boot.

The broad strokes with which the supporting cast is drawn puts the leads more into perspective, and we get to see how shallow and bizarre the world appears to them.

Great review/insight Flickjunkie! I particularly liked that paragraph...well said. A lot of people (critics included) simply didnt "get" the point of those "unrealistic" flat characters. Im glad that you pointed that fact out.

For anyone that cares, I will post up a review/analysis on my take of the movie whenever I have time (probably tomorrow)

I was sick today and I actually got a day off of work. So I decided to take a trip to the video store and pick up Ghost World. And I'm very glad I did.

Ghost World is a great film with very cool characters. It was hilarious but also depressing, especially the further we get into the movie. Thora Birch and Scarlett Johansson were great as Enid and Rebecca. They were both perfect for their part.

Overall Ghost World is a great film, but unfortunately the ending left me unsatisfied. And that's pretty much it's only flaw. Other than that it was completely brilliant and witty, it was nice to see such an original movie featuring teens.

One of the best films of 2001!!!

Grade: 9/10

I loved everything about Ghost World except for the ending. I don't think I understood it completely (and if any of you want to explain it to me, feel free). </font>

The final scene of Ghost World was (for me) the most intense, emotional scene of the film. It is my perception that Enid and Seymour were the same character in different points in time (not literally, but figuratively...think about it). While Enid was just beginning to figure out the way life works, Seymour was fully aware of life's prejudices and his character reflected that. With Enid moving out on her own, what is implied in that one scene was teh fact that she would have to sell out by getting a job (like Seymour did with Coon Chicken), play down on her interests (like Seymour did with Music), and she would have to deal with the fact that she is not able to "relate to 99 percent of humanity". I believe that the end of the movie symbolized the beginning of Enid's life.

I have to say I didn't laugh a whole lot. Someone told me it was funny. I hardly laughed. But, the story was so intriguing to me. Two friends growing apart, while desperately trying to stay together.

The ending I actually was displeased with at first. But, the more I thought about it I realized, Thora Birch did what she said she would do. She left town and never looked back.

Well, this film is enjoyable. Not that great, but enjoyable. I laughed at its humor and wittiness, and felt sad for the characters at some points. (possible spoilers)

Although I did like the fact that every character in this film grow. As Joblo said,Enid's friend went from the sarcastic teenager that always got along with Enid to a grown person who couldn't do much of that stuff with Enid because she went on with life and grew up. Seymour just lived on his life as a loser, and he probably ended up like the drawing Enid did of him when she first saw him. Enid's dad really just ended up with the woman he loved. Brad Renfro's character also didn't change much. The guy at the bus stop got what he wanted. But Enid was also like Seymour and the man waiting at the bus stop. I think the man at the bus stop ended up like Enid without a life or anyone to count on. Everyone turned their backs on them because of them. Therefore,he just waited for the bus to come so he could start a new life. Therefore,Enid did exactly as him and left off to find a new life and just disappear from her old life.

But anyway,I just enjoyed it,so I'm simply giving it a 7.

Possible Spoilers for GHOST WORLD

I liked the movie, it blew me away actually. I also liked the ending it gave as Enid was not about to conform to society just yet. Just as Seymour starts to face his problems in life by seeing a shrink Enid was still going to run away from her problems and put off the inevitable. I also like all the subtle images put in of many things that society says we must do. From shopping for plastic cups to going about our daily lives to what others expect us to be. Steve Buscemi should be up for a supporting role. He brings out a person that is deemed a loser and gives it such emotion that Seymour seems normal. More people must see Ghost World!

9/10. This is a goddamn good movie. Really funny and Steve Buscemi's great. It's fun to see how they react to the annoying, weird things around and what Thora Birch's character does with her free time. Her dad's a real pussy though. Anyways i REALLY liked this movie. Go see it.

I watched it again this last weekend and I loved it even more. It's a great and flawless movie. I loved it's humor, it's a very creative and clever film. Ghost World is brilliant. I didn't even mind the ending this time and I understood it better. I bought the DVD tonight, I was going to buy it last friday but it was sold out so I had to special order it. I love GHOST WORLD.

I'm changing the grade to a 10/10, it definitely deserves it. Afterall, I gave Pearl Harbor a 10/10, it wouldn't be right if I didn't give Ghost World a 10/10 too.

What a great film.

Ghost World was fantastic. One of the ten bests of the year, Ghost World was funny, touching, sad, depressing, entertaining, and so much more. The acting in this film was incredible. Thora Birch was AMAZING as Enid. She was perfect for the part, and no one could have filled her shoes. Steve Buscemi gives his best performance, and the best supporting role of the year. 9/10

Well, I just checked this one out on video, i heard it was funny and it was getting great reviews by many critics and you guys. I sat the whole time just staring at the screen watching two young actors in a movie, i just didn't get into, I liked Steve Buscemis character, i may have laughed once, twice at the max, and the drama also just left me staring at the screen, it just didn't effect me. I guess really didn't care about the characters enough, but this is just how i felt while watching the movie.

5/10

I loved this film! It was filled with so many memorable moments, scenes, characters, & lines. The acting was excellent all around. But the best performances were delivered by Thora Birch, Scarlett Johansson, & Steve Buscemi. It's a damn shame they didn't get get nominated for any awards, I thought they deserved them. Anyway, this was a hilarious and emotional film that took me by surprised. Ghost World is a unique gem of a film, and it deserves all the praise it's been getting. Easily, without a doubt, one of the best films of 2001.

I got a question that I don't think anyone will be able to answer.

I checked IMDB.com and at the end of the movie.

Do anyone know the name of the person with the big breasts?

Enid refers to her when they are walking and she is pointing out possible women for Seymour to go out with.

- First thing is first: I went out to buy this movie when it came to DVD not knowing much about it, or what it was even about. But, after hearing most of the schmoes praise the flick I just knew that I had to see it. Since they didn't have available to rent at the Video store I desided that I wanted to see this flick so bad that I drove to the nearest store and baught it. I just thank god that it was great-:

STORY:

I just loved this story. It was so good and so true, and it's definetly NOT your average teen flick. It goes up and beyond that and just takes you to a different world that has people that you can somehow relate to. The thing that I loved the most about the story is the fact that it seemed so real and seemed so true in every way possible. Everything that happened in this movie I can actually see happening in real life. The realism of Ghost World is just so true and spirited. I felt a connection to each of the characters as they were developed. I will admit how ever that sometimes the movie dragged a bit and in parts didn't make all that much sense. But, it's still a very good film.

ACTING:

The acting here is great all around. From Thora Birch to the guy who plyed Enid's father. I will say that the best performance though belongs to Scarlett Johansen because I definetly felt what she was going through and really made an emotional connection to her character because I have gone through some of the same stuff like losing a friend, being jealous, and trying to find myself. Scarlett just brought that character to life and made her the most memorable one of them all. But, as I stated, each actor brings the thier respected characters to life and really makes you belive what each is going through in thier lives. It's very real, and very refreshing to see this kind of acting on screen. It's something that I haven't seen for awhile.

WRITING:

The dialoge is perfect no complaints here. Props go to the writer for making the lines, characters, story, and realism so perfect.

DIRECTING:

Once again I can't complain because the director is the one that really brought this story to life and really made it seem as real as it was. Props go to him as well

FINAL THOUGHTS:

I loved this movie because it made me feel like I was there with each of the characters and really feeling thier pain and happiness. I recommend this movie to everyone, movie buff or not if you have any heart at all then you'll love this film. It's beautiful. It's a piece of art. But, like I said it dragged a bit and that is what's causeing me to give this film a lower grade then I would have liked to. But, I love this movie. Check it out if you get a chance.

FINAL GRADE: 8/10

dicaprio: for once, I agree with you. Everything except for it being too slow. But that is a minor thing...glad to see that we share similar opinions with at least one movie http://www.joblo.com/ubb/wink.gif

I don't think it was too slow either. I thought it was perfect and I was never bored.

I'm sure we share the same opinion on a lot of different movies. Ones that you have probably never heard me mention before. But, the fact that I said it was too slow does not really mean it's a slow flick it's just that some parts felt boring and kind of rushed. But, as you can see I was quick to forgive that and still gave it a good grade. I to am glad that we finally agree on something.
