The Player...9/10
Directed By:Robert Altman
Starring:Tim Robbins,Greta Scacchi,Fred Ward and Whoopi Goldberg
Plot:
The Player is a outrageous, dark comedy that follows the story of Griffin Mill(Tim Robbins.Griffin is a movie studio exec who starts to recieve death threats fom a rejected screenwriter(Vincent D'Onofrio). In an act of desperation and fear, Griffin finally makes his move and it could just be the one he regrets for the rest of his life.
Directon:
One word can describe Robert Altman's direction.Brillant.He starts us off with a brillant tracking shot that last's a very long eight minutes and doesn't let go with his unique stlye until the final frame has ended. The film is filled an extreme amount of cameos and with any other director it could have gotten old very quickly.Altman makes it a welcome addition.Your just begging for more.
Acting:
Superb.Tim Robbins gives a fabulous performance as the callous, parinoid studio executive.Whoopi Goldberg is equally effective as the detective that just won't leave Robbins alone. The Tampoon scene involving her is classic.Fred Ward and Greta Scacchi and Vincent D'Onofrio also turn in admirably performances. Many fun cameos from Hollywood's A-List.Bruce Willis,Julia Roberts,Susan Srandon,Burt Renyolds,John Cusack,Cher and many more.
My Final Thought:
I can't help but love these dark comedic thrillers. The cast is great.Robert Altman's direction is perfect. He let's his actor's go wherever they want and isn't afraid to take chances. It's filled with many Hollywood insights. We finally get to see what Hollywood is willing to do and what there not, from the inside perspective. The Player is a blast make sure to rent it.
