Now before you get on my ass about how it's no Godfather or Citizin Kane, let me explain why this movie gets a 10/10 for me. I admit I am somewhat biased because a big part of this rating comes from when I was a lot younger and I loved dinosaurs. I was about 8 when I saw this and I loved every minute of it. I loved the first 50 minutes of the movie that introduces you to the characters, shows you some pretty neat dinosaurs, and sets up the plot. I loved the intense chase scenes. And I especially loved the main theme, which is one of my favorite Spielberg-movie themes ever.
The scene where we are first introduced to the T-Rex has to be one of my favorite scenes ever. The suspense factor was through the roof in that scene, especially to me since I was a young child when I saw it. I remember cheering at the end when the T-Rex came to save the day and killed off all those raptors.
This is what I consider to be the finest popcorn movie ever. The most entertaining 2 hours in film history. Not a fine piece of art, but a fine piece of entertainment. It's got everything you want, in not just a good popcorn movie, but a good movie period: great special effects, an interesting story, characters you care about, a great score, and very intense dinosaur scenes.
Now some will say that as far as popcorn movies go, Terminator 2 is better. Some will say that Empire Strikes Back is better. Some will say that Indiana Jones is better. Some will even say that Die Hard is better. All of these are great movies, but in my opinion, they're pale in comparison to Jurassic Park. From the intense first scene with the raptor, to the last shot featuring the helicopter flying over the ocean, I loved this movie through and through.
Watch this movie and you will learn why we need "entertainment" just as much as "art".
