"The times, they are a changin'" Pat Garrett
Pat Garrett and Billy The Kid is about, you guessed it, the two men in question. Once apon a time good buddies with The Kid, Pat Garrett is now a Sheriff of Lincoln county. he meets up with his old buddy to tell him he's coming after him in 5 days.Pat Garrett is a man that wants to change with the times to survive and Billy is a man that wants to go his own way as an outlaw. What follows is the legendary conflict between the sheriff and the outlaw during changing times of the old west.
This films probably stands with Bring Me The Head of Alfreado Garcia and Junior Bonner as some of Peckinpahs least seen and best work. It totally removes itself from the normal western image of the larger than life hero & villain and glorified shootouts. Even the good characters aren't that good in this film. The directors cut adds numerous things to the picture. it adds in a good opening showing the double cross of Pat Garrett and also adds in many scenes that help in developing both of the main characters. Both james coburn and kris kristopherson do exellent jobs as well as bob dylan who makes his acting debut here as well as making the song "Knocking on Heavens Door" for the soundtrack. And of course, you can expect some Peckinpah styled violence. Western and Peckinpah fans will probably enjoy his swan song to the genre that made his career. If you can find a copy that is. a large step above the theatrical version.
Pat Garrett and Billy The Kid - 6.5/10
