I'll always have a special place in my heart for this movie. When this movie first came out, it was trashed by the critics, and it tanked at the box office, BADLY. Yet it somehow got noticed and went on to become a cult classic.

First the bad:

Heavy Metal is an old animated movie, so it really shows it's age. The animation was considered a breakthrough back then, but now, it's rough, crude, and at sometimes an eyesore. Second, this movie doesn't really have a plot. It's basically a couple of short stories loosely revolving around a magical green orb.

Now, on with the good.

Heavy Metal will always remain as one of my most favorite animated movies ever. It's got everything one could hope for in a cheesy, campy, fun romp. Back in the early 80's people really weren't used to seeing a cartoon with so much sex, violence, and rock'n'roll. And did I mention the rock'n'roll? Boy, this movie was one of the most kickass soundtracks ever! I still can't get Sammy Hagar's thundering theme "Heavy Metal" out of my head!

If you like 80's rock, sex, violence, and drugs, by all means, rent this classic gem! You won't be dissapointed!

BTW: If you ever get the chance, check out Heavy Metal 2000. This movie is basically one whole story, instead of the episodic original. It's not quite as good as the original, but it's still pretty damn awesome! The hand-drawn animation is a mixed bag, but the CGI sequences are amazing!
